why do people pedestalize SMW so much? I honestly don't get it, ok sure it was the packaged in with the console upon buying it, but yoshi's island was much better overall (no shit it came out six years later)
>art
>enemy variety
>variant gameplay
>music
the list goes on, yet you rarely if ever see mods for that title, but everyone is on the smw hype train. I honestly don't get it.

Falseflagging thread?
Both SMW and YI are great games on their own.
SMW has insanely good physics with lots of different things you can do, from different ways of jumping in many different arcs, to grabbing and throwing objects in many different angles and doing crazy meta shit (shell jumping, etc).
It's the Super Mario platforming formula, maxxed, and I don't think they ever got more complex than SMW. The New series went back to being more basic. So it makes sense romhackers who makes stuff like kaizo want SMW.
YI, while being a spinoff of the Super Mario series, and being called "Super Mario World 2" in the west, plays differently from Super Mario games (for one, there's no run button), it was a new kind of game made from scratch by the Mario team, and it's also a masterpiece. As to why there aren't more romhacks for it, I don't know, there probably is at least some?

I fail to see why people compare SMW and Yoshi's Island. The real successor to how SMW plays is actually the Donkey Kong Country series, I'm not even kidding. Play SMW and DKC2 back to back and you'll see what I mean.

>yet you rarely if ever see mods for that title
Because the tools suck ass.
>but everyone is on the smw hype train
Because everyone has played that game, and the modding tools are braindead easy to use by now. Standard Mario gameplay is universally appealling.

Yoshi's Island is fucking terrible. Out of all overrated games, it's the one that's straight shit. I can see the qualities and relevance of other overrated games like SM64 and OoT but YI is ass.
I will agree that the art is pretty hit and miss in World, most of the enemy redesigns suck and Mario's sprite is worse than 3's. Other than that it's a fantastic game.

The real successor is Super Mario Land 2. But I agree that there's no comparison between SMW and Yoshi's Island. It's like taking Sonic 1 and calling it Flicky 2. They don't even belong in the same series.

SMW is the more plain, safe game. Something I've realized is the more basic game has the broadest appeal. The more complex ones get criticized for being bloated or they just don't like the new features the game has.
OoT & MM, LA & the oracle games, Spyro 1 & Spyro 2, Sonic 2 & Sonic 3, SMW & YI.

They're very different games.
Despite being a sequel, it ditches every aspect of traditional (up to that point) Mario gameplay and does something entirely new.
It's a great game, but you can't go into it expecting more of what Mario 3 and World offered. Which is what most people expect when they see "Super Mario World 2".

>> No.9785775

>>9785270
SMW is easier to hack because it is basically an 8-bit game with extra background layers and better colors, and like half a dozen instances of mode 7 and transparency.

Yoshi's Island is way more technically advanced, you couldn't do the broken shit in it that people put in the SMW hacks.

>> No.9785838

>>9785239
Smw is good but 3 is vastly superior in pretty much every way. Yoshi's island is great but too different to compare imo.

>> No.9785895

>>9785239
Easy. SMW is the superior game while Yoshi's Island was crap, a disappointment & a crying baby Mario made the replay value go down to zero.

>> No.9786319

>>9785239
It's simple
It's the snes launch title and it knock it out the park. Despite having not amazing variety, it makes it up in level design
It's simply:
-Just great
-It's the game every has/had/knows
Even today it endures
We had Lunar Magic for years. Crazy Kaizo hacks. Crazy hacks that adds bosses from other games, etc. That really helped lengthen the legacy even longer
It truly was the perfect launch game
Yoshi's Island is amazing, but being a late release, and it being kind of expensive for forever, led to it being less popular. Also no level editors and barely any hacks at all (it's puzzling why that and Kirby Super Star doesn't). On top of that, the rest of the series kinda sucks, not helping the reputation

>> No.9786336

>>9785239
Because it's a spin off no one asked for instead of a proper 2d mario saying farewell to the snes like 3 was to the nes

I couldn't play Yoshi's Island on day 1 of the SNES's release, blockhead. And it's not strictly better than SMW anyways. SMW is a fun game with lots of levels, a shitton of secrets, fun castle levels, Yoshi riding. There's lots to like about it.

I was alive when Yoshis Island first came out. I was already obsessed with mario 3 and SMW. This game blew my mind when I rented it for the first time. A bunch of kids in my elementary school had it and even kids from other classes would discuss it with us. Being able to play the game and ignore the 100% but still beat the game was great. Then you had the option of going back and finding the secrets and using all those special items you were hoarding.

Going back to play this game as an adult, I realize how much effort was put into it and how much charm the game has. The fucking fat shy guys? They give you big eggs and are only in one level. The boss battles? Every one is unique and fun.

The only levels I disliked are the very looooooong cave (getting 100% was torture) and that special maze level in the swamp world.

For me it goes YI>SM3>>>SMW>>>SM2>>>>>>>>>>>SM1

What the fuck was wrong with Yoshi's Island? It's like degeneracy: the videogame
>Piranha Plant soft vore that spits you out (a first in the mario series)
>The fuzzies that send Yoshi on an actual drug trip
>The frog vore boss where it eats you and then shits you out when you defeat it
>That giant koopa boss that spits up eggs
>The objective of the very first boss is to attack it in order to remove its pants so it dies of embarrassment
You know what's the worst part? When you google image something and someone Deviantart page slips into the results with vore, the image fucking always has the same background as the frog fight. How many children's minds did it corrupt?

same I am no zoomie, I remember renting it and completing it within a weekend. Shit was pretty cash,so many interesting and unique mechanics in comparison to it's predecessors

>moon battle
>touch fuzzy get dizzy
>vehicle transformations
>creative use of eggs like skipping them on water to defeat naval piranha
>all sorts of variant enemies instead of the same seven enemies like every other mario game.
>unique takes on enemies
fat shyguys, wiggler butterflies, bandit shyguys, etc.

I don't get why everyone is shilling for SMW so much, it was alright in 1990, but there were any innovations after the fact.

SMW is not my favorite but it still has one of my favorite map system among retro games or even modern Mario games. I love the way the map hints and places you miiight be able to go and watching how it changes when you find a secret exit. The sense of exploration in SMW is pretty good among 2D platformers
