Post rom hacks that improve certain outdated aspects of games.

Shinobi III Enhancement Hack
Hack of Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Other major features include six-button-controller support and more flexible Hassou Shuriken (depicted in some of the screen shots below.)

Region lockout disabled.
Resetting the game no longer disrupts the display.
The Sega logo can now be skipped by pressing Start.
Minor textual changes, some ambiguities removed and non-standard spellings corrected.
Shuriken lock option added to pause window (press up/down).
Shuriken burst now respects the actual number of Shuriken remaining.
Shuriken burst is now configurable.
Ninjutsu selection is no longer blocked when out of Ninjutsu.
A couple of sound effects were put back into the options menu.
Character Editor reinstated, albeit with a different activation mechanism.
A real soft-reset feature was added to the Character Editor.
Six-button controller support enabled.
Added a code to raise the amount of Shuriken allowed in-play simultaneously.
A fix was added to emulate the European version when in PAL mode

this is cope, if the patch was truly necessary you'd say it was there to fix garbage game design

>> No.9776546

I like how this board is so retard contrarian that an OP that clearly states what a patch does, after accurately pointing out that these are aspects of old games that don't belong, gets treated like he's trying to change the game or something.

inb4 "I prefer to play the game as the developer intended" cope.

Meh, most retro games I prefer vanilla. Though I do love me some romhacks. You he dk94 and Mario vs dk romhacks are choice. They also allow you to make custom levels, which I think is a qol improvement that doesn’t mess with the gameplays

It's really sad how "QOL" romhacks have become synonym with "let's add cheats but not call them cheats or else the zoomer will offended".
I know "remasters" and other re-releases do just that, but romhackers should know better than to feed the revisionist fantasy that consists in claiming "challenge is all bad design and it was done for rentals anyway and devs didn't know better and they just wanted to stretch out the game because kids only had 1 game a year and my time is valuable and other trendy excuse I just repeat like a braindead sheep"

Another nice one is menu improvement hacks where they make small tweaks like letting you exit a menu with B instead of having to scroll down to "EXIT" or RPG hacks that add contextual buttons for key items you have to use frequently (like gen 1 Pokemon hacks adding the ability to SURF by talking to water).

Hack allows you to customize it however you want. This is not the default, and also very wasteful. But is it fun to try? Probably. No one playing like that will pretend it's normal or the intended experience. It's obviously not a game ruining cheat being passed as a "quality of life" thing.

Because, for one thing, most of the time people complain about "grind" they're just braindead people who expect to just be able to spam attack/heal and win rather than using the game's mechanics and come up with a plan, try various strategies. Because everytime people complained "you have to grind for like 10 hours in this game!" in my experience it's more like 30 mins

and more importantly, because "grind removal" hacks are so unbalanced they make you twice as powerful as if you actually did grind for 10 hours, so you might as well watch a longplay or play with gameshark codes

Strongly disagree. Dragon Quest 3 allows for practically infinite grinding, but it doesn't feel like grinding takes forever. Pointless busy-work like grinding up hearts in Castlevania 2 to buy the next thing is just a time-sink. Final Fantasy 5 has a lot of grind if you really wanna crank up your team but you don't really need to grind much otherwise. There is no fucking way in HELL I'm going to waste my time grinding the early random missions in Shadowrun for the Genesis just to get enough cash and equipment to be able to travel outside the starting area. I've never used an anti-grind hack, but there are plenty of games that could benefit from them.

How is grinding challenging?

>> No.9779785

>>9778293
a theoretical good QoL hack is something that identifies a superfluous mechanical oversight that has an oversized footprint on how you play the game and negates it. the typical example I use is being unable to cycle backwards through your inventory in zombies ate my neighbors which makes timing a sequence of inventory items the most important skill in an overhead shooter. it admittedly is very easy for a romhacker to fuck up the game if they don't have good taste but that's true of any modification.

>>9779419
Not him, but an arduous grind disincentivizes you from becoming so powerful that your next milestone is trivialized. Player could spend hours or days grinding levels, money, or items but because it takes far more time than just playing through the game underpowered, people would in theory not grind any more than their level of comfort needed to beat the game. Grinding is essentially dynamic difficulty, people better at the game will grind less and deal with more challenging bosses while people not great at the game can spend more time fighting weaker enemies to become more powerful and still progress.

My problem with "grind removal" patches is that they usually make increasing in power so easy as to nullify the time commitment and encourage players to overlevel themselves and plow through the rest of the game without a problem. As an example, in the original Final Fantasy, a 4x experience gain patch makes the Black Belt/Master absurdly strong as their power grows exponentially as they gain levels. Most normal players would beat the game around 30-35, a point which the Master is roughly on par with a Knight in most respects; taking the Master to the level cap of 50 causes him to be able to one-shot the final boss, skipping every mechanic of the fight by instantly killing anything in the game.

What a grind removal patch should do is lock the player's level to a specific point, perhaps only giving the player EXP after boss kills, such that the player has a very specific power level and toolset to work with for each encounter and no way to prop themselves up except for learning the mechanics of the game and how to handle things without overleveling them. That veers from quality of life to a difficulty hack though and is beyond what most hackers care to do.

I understand what you mean, and it depends on the game. It's just that some early NES RPGs have you running in circles around your starting town to grind before you can even hope to progress. Nothing wrong with the idea of grinding to make an already beatable fight easier, but it's not fun when grinding is mandatory. Again, we're talking about some early RPGs

>> No.9779873

>>9779862
I know some of what you're talking about, the original Phantasy Star felt sort of like that until you know exactly what you need to do and where to go. But that's more what I mean about how a grind hack should be done, start the player on an appropriate level for the enemies around them and prevent them from gaining any additional levels on top of that so the difficulty is static between all players. Making exp gains faster doesn't really fix the core issue of the game not being balanced.

>> No.9779883

This is what cheating copers tell themselves
>I'm just going to give myself x5 exp
>I'd just have done the same thing anyway it would simply have taken longer

Except you wouldn't have. You would have maybe grinded half of what the cheat gives you; and then the cheat allows you to play like a dumbass instead of using proper tactics and ressource management, which is where the challenge should have come from.

And then there is the question of how much people always exagerate how much grinding is required, fed by repeating bullshit said in FAQs written by literal autist who always grind needlessly.

There is also the fact that people have the wrong expectations. Starting from the the middle of the 4th gen, most challenge in JRPGs were completely nullified by default. So then people play older stuff and except to just play like retards and spam attack and then scream "waaa this game is a grindfest!!!" when they die doing that.

It is no different than zoomies claiming shit like 1ups are an outdated concept and all challenge is bad design because they're used to modern game design. In essence, "grind removal" is exactly the same thing as that.

>> No.9779947

>>9779932
>shit like 1ups are an outdated concept
they did become largely outdated on the snes when games started to phase out actual gameovers, losing one or two checkpoints in a level doesn't really justify them. the bare minimum for them to not be vestigal is something like smb3 where you get sent back to the start of a world.

>> No.9780025

>>9779932
>1ups
It does depend on the continue system and the life system at the same time. In Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World and Mega Man, it's infinite continues and a life system, and the life system makes the game easier. If you remove the life system where you get sent back to the check point when you die, you'll always get sent back to the start of the level. In Super Mario 64, It's infinite continues and a life system which is more-or-less meaningless and just prevents you from having to start at the castle entrance instead of directly in front of the level you died in.

are SNES/Genesis era games hard? or are they beatable? I only played FFVI and it was easy.

>> No.9780653

>>9779419
it's challenging on your time and patience, which is a legitimate balancing factor. people are going to grind as little as they can get away with, which varies depending on the person. You can theoretically spend the reset of your life punching slimes to get your character to level 99 and never see a game over screen again, but you won't, because grinding is challenging on a time constraint level to you.

>> No.9780678

>>9780632
honestly it mostly comes down to the continue system they use. genesis games tend to be significantly harder because many still followed the arcade gameover format. snes games mostly started to move away from that with the exception of a few titles like contra and super ghouls n ghosts. If you're playing something with unlimited lives it usually won't be crazy hard.

The thing with Donkey Kong Country and especially Super Mario World is that the game makes it so easy for you to just top up with so many lives you'll never get a game over that they functionally serve no purpose. Having a stricter punishment for dying with 0 lives left than with more than 0 lives left is pretty irrelevant when the game makes it so easy to ensure you never have 0 lives left. Both those games really just have lives out of tradition.

>The thing with Donkey Kong Country and especially Super Mario World is that the game makes it so easy for you to just top up with so many lives you'll never get a game over that they functionally serve no purpose.

This is not true, or you've probably only played with savestates.

When you resume your game after saving, you're stuck in the last world you saved in. You can't go back to earlier worlds to grind on lives easily unless you unlock the Funky Kong stage, which are often located near the end of a world; so you're stuck with the initial 3 or 5 lives (saves don't save lives) until you do

>> No.9780976

>>9780958
It's true. Not only does each world usually have a place that makes it easy to grind lives if needed (remember you can start+select your way out of levels you've beaten), but you typically unlock both Funky and Candy around the same time, very rarely more than a level apart. Sometimes you even unlock Funky BEFORE Candy.

>> No.9780993

Hell, I checked DKC1 for you.

World 1: Funky after level 4, Candy after level 5
World 2: Funky and Candy both after level 4
World 3: Funky after level 2, Candy after level 4
World 4: Funky and Candy both after level 5
World 5: Candy after level 3, Funky after level 5
World 6: Funky after level 3, Candy after level 4

There's ONE fucking world in the game where you can save midway through and then have to beat another two levels without being able to go grind elsewhere.
