I use MiSTer, I think it's fine. Retroarch probably has the same options it has. Here I'm using adaptive scanlines, HDR and a PVM shadowmask.

If you're going to try and emulate a CRT, though, HDR is a must. You can't get anywhere near the clarity and brightness of a CRT without HDR. You'll also need resolutions of 1440p at the very least, but 4k is even better. I recommend sticking around CRT friends threads and saving your favorite shots as a reference and try to approximate the look is probably the best approach.

I remember someone here or elsewhere telling me that plugging a modern PC into a consumer TV can damage it badly because of the different refresh rates (TV requiring 15kHz) or something?
Is there any truth to this, or is it a misconception?

Is there a safe way to plug a laptop/PC into a consumer CRT then? Everytime I google it I keep finding people on forums just saying to buy a HDMI to Composite/component converter.
tempted to buy a Raspberri Pi or similar mini computer that has composite out, but they're all impossible to find with the chip shortage/whatever is happening with China.

>> No.9779741

>>9779660
i'm not an expert, but i don't think the refresh rate would matter, there just wouldn't be sync. but vga uses more voltage for sync, which could damage a tv if you make a scart cable wrong or something. computer monitors might be damaged from refresh rates outside their specs, but all the ones i've tried just don't display the signal with no apparent damage. depends on the monitor i bet. an hdmi to component converter would work. the thing you'd want to pay attention to is the resolution and refresh rate, not because you're at risk of damaging your tv, but to get what you want to display. make sure the converter does 240p if you want that. see if it downscales the video signal, which isn't necessary and might be unwanted if you can just set a resolution on your laptop. downscaling might also introduce input lag if you're concerned about that.

>> No.9779746

>>9779670
HDMI to composite will rape your picture quality and most likely add some lag. You'll get forced interlacing so no 240p, on top of it being composite.
The correct way to do this is with native VGA out or a DP to VGA adapter. This way you get RGB, assuming you can output a proper mode from your GPU. And anons have written essays on it, I see this shit reposted every thread here.
From there you can use a RGB to YPbPr transcoder if your TV has a component input.

>> No.9786402

Not worse, just smaller.
The original 16:9 frame covers all 480 lines. A widescreen CRT fills the whole scan area with those lines, so the picture is stretched horizontally and appears correct. On a 4:3 set you instead have to squish those lines together vertically to get a proper aspect ratio. All the lines are there, just closer to each other.
In both instances you use the full 480i resolution of the video signal and get correct aspect ratio. It's superior to letterboxing the picture by adding black bars in a 4:3 frame in the signal itself, that way you'd waste 25% of the lines and get a lower resolution in result.

Different anon here. I think your confusion is you're thinking that the phosphor cells light up like they are pixels. When the raster hits one it doesn't light up uniformly, only the part that's hit lights up. So if two lines are more tightly focussed and are so perfectly aligned they hit the same cell, you still get two lines with a dark section in the middle. Although the "scanline" is harder to discern usually because you'll get the same amount of light bleed.
The way the phosphors are arranged is a manufacturing convenience more than anything. The limit to vertical resolution (apart from electronics) is about how accurately the beam can be focussed. On a consumer TV it's deliberately not as sharp as it could be, but it's still plenty sharp.
So the tl;dr is that there will only be very minor image degredation.

Also a good example for this is an aperture grille, where there's no separation between phosphors on the vertical axis. They're just stripes of color going from top to bottom, with the beam exciting them only in the line where it lands.

I've had consumer, pro-grade and PC CRTs, with all mask types and the only practical advantage that Trinitrons had was the lack of moire patterns.
Sharpness, convergence, brightness, colors etc can all be comparable to other mask types.

>SCART to HDMI
I don't know of any good ones, SCART is not my thing, but there's a couple of things to know. First off you want an HDMI to SCART converter, these things only work one way. Secondly, it's most likely going to be an interlaced signal which is fine for TV and videos, but you won't get that crispy 240p for video games. Lastly anything that has an NTSC/PAL switch probably won't support RGB over SCART, so you'll likely be getting a composite signal with all the problems that comes with that.

>>9797941
It's not that SCART is bad, SCART is just a connector. The best quality signal you can feed that TV is likely RGB, you might want to check your TV's manual to be sure that it supports it.
2 ways to do 240p on a CRT that I know of
1) crt emudriver setup on an old ati gpu with analog out.
2) use a custom "super resolution" with an HDMI to VGA DAC
Either way, you'd also need a VGA to SCART adapter.
I've seen guides for both but I've never done that setup personally.

I found two CRTs on the side of the road 2 days ago and I was very happy to find out that they both worked. One of them is a Sony Trinitron KV-20FS120 (the last one released in North America, apparently), and a generic looking Konka TV that was missing a sticker on the back with a model number.
I ordered a HDMI2AV box on ebay, should I have gone for something else? Is S-Video more desirable?

If you want a scart port on just plastic, then you'll have to create a support bracket that attaches to the pcb. Best way is to 3d print a custom model. I would recommend using screws anyway, since factory tvs have them all the time from what ive seen.

HDMI2AV is good enough. It's excellent for playing old tv shows. Gaming performance with clarity and input lag will leave you wanting more. It always outputs 480i so its not worth using for emulated games from the 5th gen and earlier.

I just bought my childhood Trinitron again, we gave it away in 2014 after sitting in a basement since 2011. It was $20 and honestly, it was probably the last chance I could grab the exact same model of set again, or if I could, probably at some dumb price. Probably not the same TV.

Fuck man, the nights playing original Xbox live/PS2 and early 360 days.

Awesome that you got your literal childhood TV back. Must be some insane nostalgia playing on the same set.
