Why was this game lost for so many years in the west?

Even on PlayStation, when they released Origins, Anthology, and Chronicles, they left it out.

RPGs have shitloads of text to translate that has to be localized, edited, proofread, etc.and then, even after it's finished, the script has to be looked over by the ratings board. If the ratings board finds anything inappropriate for children, but the publisher wants an E rating for the game, they'll have to go back in and make changes.
This is all a very long and tedious process, and with Square pumping these games out like crazy, there was simply not enough time or money to make the process worth it. A lot of games still don't get translations to this day because of these issues, especially considering that game scripts have inceased a thousandfold since these days. No one wants to read and translate and proofread all that bullshit no one's gonna read anyway because modern RPG fans only care about jacking off to their waifus anyway.

Those are ports of the WonderSwan versions. The WonderSwan version of 3 was cancelled because it wouldn't fit on the cartridge using the same assets as used in FF1/2, so they would have had to redo a lot more and deemed it wasn't worth the investment.

I played a fan translated version on an emulator in probably 2000-2001 and honestly it's just really not that good of a game. I'm sure it was a decent jrpg when it came out, but the snes trilogy outclasses it completely. That being said, yeah they should have included it with Origins.

I haven't played any of them, but I did finish and enjoy Grandia II

6,7,9 or 10, take your pick. I really like 8, but the consensus is divided on whether or not that one is good. I'd say start with 7 honestly, that's where most people that like final fantasy started, and it's the most well known one.

Combination of things. For one, it came out in 1990, late into the Famicom's life, when the SFC/SNES was on the horizon. Here what >>9773482 says comes into effect, so by the time they finished the localization (and keep in mind, 1990 is precisely when the FIRST FF game got localized into the West), assuming they still skipped localizing FF2, at best they'd be releasing it close to the SNES launch or thereabouts. You can see, then, why they'd opt instead to skip it and focus on localizing FFIV for the new SNES console instead, which released as a launch window title. Then what >>9773503 states happened, and that's why we didn't get it there or as part of FF Origins. And of course, they up and lost the source code, so that didn't help matters at all. By the time FF got huge overseas and people were wondering about the lost title or whatever, they decided a 3D remake was the best way to introduce it.

7 is great but if you’re a graphicsfag then it probably aged the worst.

>> No.9773660

It's because it never got a Wonderswan conversion like FF1+2+4.
5 and 6 (FF Anthology) made a lot more sense to package together for the West. Origins came after the WSC versions.

if you like waiting and looking at gaudy, overcomplicated nonsense, play a 3D one (7, 9, 10)
if you like good graphics and prefer not to wait as much, play 6, or 5 if you care much more about mechanics than about story

I wish I knew the real reasons why FF2 and 3 weren't released in the US.

And don't give me that "the west didn't like RPG" crap, this was the NES days, they did at that point. FF1 sold more in the US than in Japan and it was in Nintendo Power's top10 for a long time, so were the GB FF games and Dragon Warrior games.

>>9773498
More like easily the worst. It's a good game but the story sucks, gameplay is too easy and incredibly one dimensional despite the job system. 1 and 2 were better than 3 in all regards.

>>9774694
Again, most likely it was just the timing relative to the launch of the SNES. They took too long to localize and release the first FF, so by the time it was a clear success, the SNES was a year away, and they probably figured it was better to just wait and localize FF4 rather than go through the trouble of localizing games that might be seen as outdated by that point and would probably not sell as much.

>And of course, they up and lost the source code,
I never found a source for this, just a rumor as to why the Wonderswan version was cancelled (which doesn't make sense because..they didn't realize they didn't have it until after development started? What?).
Far as I can tell, the developers got greedy and thought a game like Final Fantasy III deserved a 3D PS2 remake, and Sony or whomever kept laughing them off until they eventually downsized and settled for a DS remake, which Square Enix lazily pretended was the only version until the pixel remaster project finally gave them the chance to give us a modernized 2D version (that pales in comparison to what we woul've had years ago if SE weren't morons).

I haven't played FF3 DS, it looks to awful for me to bother. However this post reeks of idiot who failed to come up with strategy and spent 10 hours grinding because he expects to just be able to spam attack/heal and win. That's usually how it goes when people complain about a game being THIS grindy, I find it to be never true and it's just the player has never played a JRPG with decent gameplay so shat his pants the moment a game dares to have a little challenge.

>> No.9777252

>>9777229
It's a rumor, but it makes sense since the only time SE has tried remastering the 2D game since the original is the Pixel Remasters. Either the Wonderswan base was just that important or something came up.
Also in that review
>I don't think that job levels were such a bad idea, but there were not many job classes where your job level is too important
The interview brings up some good points, but job levels are pretty damn important, both for making abilities more powerful/successful and for physical attacks. The fact that the reviewer implies that they never bothers might explain some of the difficulty they had. Not to say that they didn't bring up some legitimate issues like the enemy turn calculation or that the game is grindy, but the job level thing reads like a red flag.
And to be fair to the game's difficulty, a lot of jobs both obvious and subtly got buffs or tweaks like more items it could use. It's too much at some points, but that's probably also part of the reason why it's harder.
