Who was behind all these "DS" abbreviations in subtitles? Did Nintendo explicitly suggest it to developers/publishers? Or did they all independently perceive how cute it was and organically choose to do it on their own? Was it limited to English-language releases?

The English version is a kinda bad port of the Japanese version. The Japanese version has a massive text size (which is great for reading complex kanji) but the English version maintains that, and it's really annoying turning a page every ten seconds. I'd recommend emulating it and seeing if the text size jives with you or not before buying that.
The DS is a legitimately good e-reader in Japanese though. I have the DS 1000-year anniversary edition of Genji Monogatari (a classic work of Japanese literature written in 1007) and it was only like fifteen bucks and came with like fifty extra Japanese public domain books on it. If I wanted to buy a paper copy it would have ran me over a hundred dollars.
Obviously you can read the whole thing for free online or just download it as a text file but considering how long it takes to read the damn thing (it's something like 5,500 pages) I wanted to get a version that was a little nicer.

While reading old reviews and deciding whether to try Tetris DS, I've had to learn about how apparently singleplayer Tetris became increasingly casualized since I played it last, with infinite rotation of fallen blocks, switching of blocks in and out of inventory, and many-step previews of future blocks. Disappointing! (I will probably still play this game though, because it appears to include multiple turn-based puzzle modes and I have yet to encounter a mode like that in a Tetris derivative that I didn't enjoy.)

For fun, I've been trying to identify sources for the various elements of that game and this is only the second one from Sunshine that I've noticed. Yes, Proportions are a very important thing as are angles, but art still isn't to be treated like its Algebra, or Calculus.
