Was there this much over lap with current and previous gen consoles as there were in the past? Like when snes came out nes was done and when n64 came out snes was done and they didn't do any of this release the same game but with slightly better textures stuff

>>9767156
there was always multiplatform stuff
however, i think there is more of a fragmented base this gen (and last gen)
as not everyone is keen on dumping money of the ps5\series x

esp when there are budget options available
from a company standpoint, why not double-dip?
how you can potentially sell the game twice

Mega Man 6 came out 1993, overlap has always been a thing

They're just pcs now so they follow pc rules. You can play new games on old pcs, with the graphics turned down.

To an extent, obviously.

Snes, genesis, ps1, and ps2 still got some late releases though, and those were often some of the best.

But you didn't seen anything like megaman x on nes

it will never happen again
they have the money-grub formula figured out now
minor updates, old shit to landfills, resell upgrades forever

I think Nintendo's final snes game came out in like fucking 2000 or something, fire emblem 5

Why are underage retards allowed to post shit like this? The NES was still getting games through the early 90s.
The Genesis and SNES had multiplats released on them all the way up to 98. Hell the Genesis had exclusive titles getting released on it in 1997.
The PS1 sold 1/3rd of its entire units after the PS2 came out, and was getting exclusives all the way through 2002, and multiplats all the way up til 2004-5

He's not wrong though. The NES was getting a handful of games that mimicked the SNES, like TMNT Tournament Fighters and Wario's Woods, but it wasn't nearly like what's happening with the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which are essentially getting the exact same games as the previous generation, which are still quite active. Imagine if the PS2 were getting a bunch of PS1 games with barely any differences this deep into it's lifespan.

Microsoft explicitly wants to turn the "Xbox" landscape into a platform agnostic environment, making it a Steam competitor and maybe even go full streaming service so you don't actually have anything local. "Xbox" and "PlayStation" are eventually going to become the gaming equivalent of Netflix and Disney+ and the only physical things they'd be selling are the controllers and maybe a branded desktop machine that could nominally be seen as a "console."

>> No.9767256

>>9767236
No, he's completely wrong. Games have shared consoles and been re-releases since the start of the industry. The only difference is the advancements are in frame rate and resolution now rather than actual rendering techniques so the difference between a PS4 and PS5 version of a game isn't as apparent as a SNES and N64.
The only consoles that have ever had their entire libraries just flat out die as soon as the successor was released are the Saturn and N64 and that's because no one wanted to make games for either of them to begin with.

>> No.9767258

>>9767209
to be fair that was a special case, you had to go buy a rewritable cartridge yourself so that nintendo didn't have to actually do a print run of it because they didn't expect it to sell jack shit

If you're trying to argue that the transition from the NES to the SNES or the PS1 to the PS2 had the same vibe as the PS4 to the PS5 and the Xbox One to the Series X you're either not paying attention or are being willfully obtuse. Yes, consoles continued to get games years into "next gen" but they weren't doing it nearly to this degree where it was the exact same library.

The number of authentic Xbox Series X games that aren't just Xbox One games is pitifully small for a system that's about 2 1/2 years old.

I explicitly said the transition from PS4 to PS5 is different than previous console releases you illiterate fucking retard. There's no reason to release a game only on current consoles, when the previous consoles can run them more or less the same, albeit at reduced frame rates and resolutions.
If the PS1 could have fucking ran Devil May Cry there would have been a version of it on the console

>past gens
Hardware architecture between console gens was different, so you couldn't just easily port games over.
>now
Hardware architecture between console gens is just standard PC hardware and development tools have largely been standardized (Unreal Engine, Unity, etc), so you can easily port the same game across multiple platforms.

The Saturn was still getting games in Japan after the Dreamcast launch. Final Fight Revenge came out there even after the western Dreamcast launch. The N64 still got a few games after the GameCube's launch too, but mostly sports shit. The only notable non-sports game it got was the Japan-exclusive 2001 version of Bomberman 64 (which is a completely separate game than the 1997 Bomberman 64 that released worldwide).
