is it because of nostalgia that i can replay this game so many times and still enjoy it?

>> No.976441

>>976434
Also because it's one of the most fun RPGs ever made

>> No.976453

I can't think of any other humour oriented RPGs beside this and the Paper Mario series.

Really, I can't. Please let me know if I am wrong, I'd love to play another funny rpg.

There's FFV.

I don't think it's humorous in the same way the SMRPG and Paper Mario are, but it has a very lighthearted story and goofy characters. Especially when compared with other FFs.

Albert Odyssey, Threads of Fate (Just Mint's story, though), Rhapsody... I guess EarthBound could be considered one with how off-beat it is and how it doesn't really take itself as seriously as Mother 1 and 3 do.

>> No.976492

>>976471
Lighthearted, yes, funny, no.

>> No.976493

Rhapsody wasn't funny, it was sucrose laden.

Play the GBA port, not the PSX one. A good translation really helps.

>> No.976502

the fact that the little attack animations of your charactes and the enemies are interactive makes the game better most than most other rpgs where you are literally doing nothing as a player while you wait for animations to finish playing

the quarky dialogue is always interesting to read even if you already played the story.

you can rush through it pretty quick. Dungeons are short but each room looks unique and theres a large variety of enemies and so you are always seeing new sites. You are never forced to grind for XP or $ so the pacing is great

>> No.976508

I pretty much ignore Paper Mario/& Luigi because it's not Super Mario RPG. Those games are just too gimmicky, while RPG has gimmicks but not too much

Tell that to Legend of Dragoon

The rest is true though.

You're doing yourself a great disservice. Also, what the fuck do you mean by "gimmicky"? I'd call those games many things, but gimmicky is a words I've never heard anyone call them.

>paper mario too gimicky

TTYD is when paper gimmicks were introduced, I can't think of a single kind of attack or item that bases itself on mario being paper, and the attacks are pretty similar to SMRPG

Mario & Luigi(isn't retro) has some action minigames, but so fucking what, because only one of them requires you to beat it, it's easy, and they aren't a main part of the game. Superstar Saga, which is a fantastic game, much like paper mario and SMRPG, introduced the bro attacks, which are pretty much a bit more involved versions of the special attacks in SMRPG

I'm seriously trying to think of one gimmicky thing about both of those games and can't. Too action oriented for you != gimmicky, if that's what you're getting at.

>> No.976545

Also SMRPG has awesome sidequests. Not an overwhelming amount, and they all are fun in different ways

-Beetle hill
-Yoshi racing
-Jinx
-Hidden casino
-Beetle invasion (getting it was half the fun)
-Getting 100 jumps
-Culex
-Mine cart racing
Did I forget any?

The waterfall was easily the best one, how could you forget it?

>> No.976569

The 3 musty feers quest was awesome
Getting the key for the treasure area in monstro town
Getting the lazy shell

It's so much fun, I will have to go back and play it again soon even though I've beaten it so many times

Oh god how could I have forgotten those. Also

It is truly a great game.

There were several minigames that were required to be beaten in M&L to progress the plot.

Border Jump, Super Stache Smash, and Barrel are some, and I'm pretty sure there are some more.

They are very few and far between, much like SMRPG.

I wish there were more RPGs like paper mario/mario & luigi. Too bad the newer ones really blow (paper mario anyway)

>> No.976680

Nope. I never played it as a kid and yet it is my favorite SNES game as an adult.

They need to make a proper sequel in the same world with the same characters and a new original story.

Only if they add Luigi.

You read my mind. Shameful that the other (better) Mario brother was excluded

>> No.976803

I hate JRPGs but Super Mario RPG is just too goofily charming for me to not enjoy a playthrough now and then. Some of it is surely nostalgia but it's just an odd, special game.

I usually quit after Exor, though.

Yeah, the factory is awesome and has cool music but it's just getting to smithy and then saving and your game is stuck there forever.

False. You can get back. It's just a pain.

No anon, its fucking awesome, im at Star Hill at the moment and im playing all magic upgrades so I use mostly magic at boss battles.

I like to change the upgrades every time I play this game.

shit loads of fun!

>> No.978553

I do the same thing. I recently played through and went with HP for every char every time to see if I could get everyone to 255 by level 30. Everyone did except Mallow who got screwed with 254.

During that run I noticed that if you kill every enemy that crosses your path, but never grind, as well as buying the exp booster as soon as you get to seaside and rotate it through your characters you will be damn close to level cap on all chars by the time you get to smithy. I think I only had to go back and kill 3 or 4 mech yaridoviches to hit cap on all chars.

>> No.978572

I really need to get around to actually beating this game. I've started several times since it came out, but just ended up dropping it for no real reason.
