nta but Yu Suzuki himself has said that it's not a "racing game", but is instead a "driving game". As an example, in easier difficulties you can get to a goal finish in Outrun 2006 without passing a single rival. You can still technically "racing against the clock", but it's not something you have to do if you just want to relax and drift a bit.

The difference between the two with regards to a game like Outrun is pretty pedantic though, and not worth getting upset about, so both of you should probably chill a little.

Splash Wave is the best song, by the way.

100% this. I had just discovered Initial D when this came out must have been 2004. Our local arcade obtained a sit-down cab and I wanted to dorifto so I punched the petals like takumi and lo and behold I was driftan like a boss, it was great. The music and atmosphere were so good. I never cared for Outrun before that, but this scratched an itch I didnt know I had, and no one asked for it, which made it special. It could never be replicated with an Outrun3.

Initial D games are so janky and unrewarding. They don't get neither drifting nor driving in general right. They feel like snowboarding games but without tricks. Ideally, ip owners should've just given the Initial D license to Taito instead. Does Initial D really attract people who don't care about cars so much that they are ok with Sega Rosso's gameplay style? Maybe they're into characters and eurobeat, idk.

i disagree. I prefer arcade of sim and don't find them janky; i find they have a very deep learning curve. And i prefer them in single-player. In vs battles all you do is shove your nose up the backside of the car in front and sit there. Or have a car shoved up yours. You can't see the road, and it gets a little boring, to me.

>>9770902
Arcade on TP is prettiest by far, and that's a big part of OR2 to me. And it works best in LAN, where the PC version is dull in terms of colour and janky in terms of LAN :) It does have the FXT mod though, which ups the stakes a little with extra features like the stage editor, even if it doesn't bring back the colour.

>>9767451

OR2 C2C on PC only sees the first two controllers on your system. Keyboard works best in the menus. You might also try the FXT mod - just remember than using it to rebind your gears (which you may HAVE to do) means you can no longer gear-drift (switch down/up fast while cornering) you can only brake drift.

>>9766467
That's why OR2 is a classic. Scud Race is too frantic, Daytona has it's own feel, and in ID Zero you hare down mountain passes thick with cherry blossoms, or autumnal foliage. I'd probably pick that last if forced to, but i'll admit it's not the same thing at all.

the most important thing is realizing the limit of the car, how much you can push the car in a corner, when to break/throttle etc. Arcade racers in general are more simplified so you can push the car a lot more, depending on the game. Sim/simcade in general will give you better driving fundamentals though.

It kind of fucked with the atmosphere of the original game desu, One of the things lost from the 2d and early 3d eras was the ability to make graphics pop off the screen in a cartoony way while still having an otherwise low key presentation. For sega to avoid their game looking indistinguishable from a hundred other car games they needed to make the game overtly cheesy.
