I was pretty much over it, but now I'm bummed all over again. I miss my boy, bros.
Despite the obvious sentimental value I've lost, I have no issue paying like $70 for another one, but I'm hesitant to buy something with a screen without seeing it in-person. Plus, I'm a little worried the screen will be worse than I remember, even though I'm not satisfied with VC injection on my 3DS these days and am only tolerating using carts on my Lite at the moment.

This precisely, Nintendo's monopoly did untold damage to the advancement and evolution of handheld gaming, the GBA sported a mere 16 mhz ARM CPU, which was pitifully slow for 2001 standards, as Palm devices and mobile phones were sporting ARM CPUs several times faster, for comparison, see the GamePark GP32, which has a 133 mhz ARM CPU, released the same year as the GBA, yet almost TEN TIMES faster. It is a damn shame Sony stopped making handhelds, though we see the same utter dominance with the Steam Deck similarly making a joke of the pathetic and underpowered Switch.

One of the stores I went to recently only had one GBA, and it happened to be a boxed glacier model. It was $650. My original one wasn't in pristine condition, obviously, and had its share of battle scars, but when I'm paying for something it's hard to accept that I'm handing over money for something noticeably worn.

Yup. It seems so. The GBA mario games are kinda weird. because I have to figure out what game is what in my head.

> Super Mario Advance = Port of Super Mario Bros. 2 USA Allstars + gameplay enhancements and voice overs from the Mario cast.
> Super Mario Advance 2 = Port of Super Mario World allstars with VO cast and screen crop.
> Super Mario Advance 3 = Port of Yoshi's Island with typical GBA alterations and VO.
> Super Mario Advance 4 = Port of Super Mario Bros. 3 Allstars with some additional changes, and standard GBA downgrades like screen crop, and high contrast colours and of course VO.

I recall resenting the GBA for the longest time because I got the original one when I wanted the SP, and the screen was just absolutely awful, in some ways worse than its predecessors, even worse than cheap knockoff handhelds from that same time period, I despised it because the library was so good and I couldn't properly enjoy it.

Nowadays I emulate everything and feel even more resentful of all the good stuff I missed out on because of the original version being such a garbage handheld, how is it a portable if you need the most perfect conditions around it to see anything? It defeats the whole purpose of a portable being convenient and comfortable.

got the SP for christmas
for some reason I really wanted Duel Masters with it despite only having some episodes of the show and wasn't even really into the show and miles away from being interested in the cards itself
however my mother also bought a second game; Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and that was an amazing adventure
I cherish those time wholly, thank you mom
seriously, FFTA kicked off my love for SRPGs which is one of my favourite genres of all time
thanks for reading my blog
another blogpost - i bought a bunch of GBA games because GameStop sold them for 5 bucks each, got plenty of great games like Zelda ALttP, Metroid Fusion, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem Sacred Stones, Final Fantasy 4 and a couple other games for just 5 bucks
only three games I didn't grab and regret were Mario Tennis, Mario Kart Advance and Pokémon Pinball RS

nowadays I emulate GBA games on my Vita despite still owning my original GBA SP which sits in a vitrine in the room where I spend 90% of my time, gonna use it for Final Fantasy Chronicles multiplayer once the stars align

another blogpost - I actually cracked my GBA SPs screen while trying to clean it, only a couple lines at the top so it's mostly just hud elements that are partially missing in most games
I repaired my DS touchscreen before so I was a bit too overconfident with it and it went CRRRK
got another one which I bought from one of my brothers friends back then which has a good screen

Underrated comment. I always thought the look of GBA was a big selling point. It had an iconic design that fit really well with the “colored plastic” aesthetic Apple made popular back in that era. Whereas the SP looks like your standard “clean” aluminum palm pilot/disposable generic design everyone started moving to in the mid-2000s. And the backlighting on the SP didn’t really improve the gameplay much, either…

>> No.9770093

>>9770087
I disagree, the frontlight on the SP improved playability a lot. The DMG and GBC were able to get away with no lighting because of the higher contrast and chunkier graphics, but GBA games need extra light to make out the fine detail.

Frontlight wasn't enough though, the later backlit models are even better. The screen on the Micro is tiny but quality, and that model's overall style is distinct and appealing too.

I much prefer the GBA's ungainly shape in a less bold color - white is good, a pastel pink or orange or yellow (anything not too dark or bold or neon) would be good. Something clean and gentle and light. It looks wrong to me in a dark or vibrant color.

I liked the indigo they chose, and I was always wary of white and beige plastic because back then at least, the plastics they used to make enclosures on consoles and pcs seemed prone to fading very quickly, even without direct sunlight.
