What are we playing Saturnbros?
Any recent pickups? Installed that ODE yet?

I still need to get a CRT with composite in before I'm hooking mine up. Need to do more research first but I want the best experience I can to do it justice because I've wanted one since I was like 6 or 7 and just got one a few months ago (gray Japanese). I bought a PSK cart with it and my buddy gave me some bootleg discs for Astal, Guardian Heroes 2, Bulk Slash, VirtualON, Radiant Silvergun and Galactic Attack - when I finally get it all set up, what should I play first?

I haven't played mine in months, and I might be getting rid of my old 32" CRT to clear out some space in my living room (I'm buying a friend's flatscreen to help her raise money to move out of state and won't have space in my living room for both). I'm thinking of selling the Saturn. What would a decent ballpark price be for the following:

> Japanese Model 2 Saturn in excellent condition
> MODE ODE installed with 120GB SSD
> Standard white controller
> White 3D controller
> Black Stunner gun
> ASCII "Fighter Stick X" (The Street Fighter Alpha version, complete with the box, registration card, and stickers)
> White Memory Cart
> 1MB RAM Cart
> 4MB RAM Cart
> 4-in-1 Pseudosaturn cart
> Netlink

I've been so fucking busy lately I haven't been able to touch it. The last game I played was Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels. It's pretty primitive, but its a lot of fun if you're into older FPS games and are a Warhammerfag.

how does saturn memory saving works? do I have o buy a cardtridge to put it on the slot behind where the cd bay is? I think I read somewhere that it also had internal memory

>> No.9760636

>>9760625
It saves to a CR2032 battery. Behind the console, there's an expansion bay. That's where it lives. I'd recommend using a good MIJ battery like a Maxell. Those usually last longer than the Chinesium shit. Also yes, the cartridge slot behind the disc drive is used for memory cards and ram expansion.

>>9760625
The Saturn has internal save storage on volatile memory that is powered by a CR-2032 battery (a watch battery). You can save games directly to the console, but the if the battery dies your saves are lost. You can hotswap batteries to prevent this, and the batteries tend to last for a long time anyway, but anyone with a Saturn should also have a memory cartridge. You can access the saved games stored on both the console and memory carts from within the Saturn's BIOS menu.

Memory carts fit in the slot behind the drive door and work like a typical memory card does on other consoles. They're also fucking huge compared to the onboard storage (if I remember right the onboard storage is like 400-something blocks, and the memory cart is over 8,000).

Normal memory carts have 'direct save', which means you save games directly to the cart. Some Gameshark/Action Replay carts have onboard savegame storage, but its compressed, so you can't save games directly to it (its not recognized by the console). Instead you have to load the Action Replay menu and transfer saves from the console to the cart, which compresses them.

Modern ODEs (optical drive emulators) that replace the Saturn's CD-ROM drive also have a feature that lets you backup saves (either individually, or the entire contents of the console's save storage) onto removable storage (like a MicroSD card, USB stick, or hard drive).

You can also replace the volatile memory on the Saturn's motherboard with a different chip that is non-volatile (as in, if your battery dies, your saves don't disappear). This is called an FRAM mod, and it requires soldering skill. Some game/electronic stores will do this procedure for a fee if you're not comfortable with your soldering skills.

Save carts are different from RAM carts on the Saturn. RAM carts have extra short term memory used for a handful of games, but you cannot save games to them.

I got a Phantom Universal back when you could still get those for $30 and a non-PseudoSaturn Action Replay to play imports/expand memory. I also have a Jap memory card/Jap OEM S-video cable so I'm basically set. Only thing I need is a multitap for Bomberman. Only thing is some games block "cheat" devices like Panzer Dragoon so you have to patch the .iso. I've been thinking about making a region free bios chip because I have an eeprom writer, but I've seen what it looks like when people fuck up pulling the bios chip.

>> No.9762373

I have an Action Replay, but I haven't altered it yet. I'd like to be able to play burned games, but from what I understand, modding the AR to play burned games overwrites it's ability to back-up game saves. I know I could just get a memory card or a 2nd AR to solve the problem, but my AR has to be inserted at just the right angle or it Saturn won't read it. If I remove the AR cartridge, it's a pain in the ass to get the Saturn to read it again. So I don't want to be swapping around multiple cartridges. Is there a cart that I can buy that does it all? Yeah, people will argue with each other whether its better to burn at 2X (or the lowest your burner will go) or max speed, or whatever the disc was rated at, but at the end of the day you can get a 100 pack of CDRs on Amazon for like $20, so if you get a bad burn all you've done is wasted twenty cents worth of plastic. Try it a few different ways and you'll find out which method is better for your burner, Saturn, and the media you're using. Honestly though, at this point just get an ODE.

While this isn't /tg/, I gotta tell you that I LOVE WH40K TOO. It's just cool and draws from all sorts of history, legends, and more. Those Space Hulk games, earlier strategy games such as WH40K Final Liberation (I beat it a few years ago and it really fun), and others are really great.

I've read Death of Integrity, it's great. My favorite part is where the admech dude is looking at a Techmarine with disdain, while thinking about how much he dislikes them, how the machine cult teaches them the absolute bare minimum of their secrets because they are not worthy of the gift of knowledge, how space marines are basically disposable tools, and how they probably don't even deserve names. I love marines, but while most characters in the universe are super stoked to have them around it was nice to see the inner thoughts of an imperial who was basically disgusted by them. Also new edition fuck yeah fucking terminators rule baby let's gooooooooo!

>>9763067
Panzer Dragoon is pretty great, definitely a highlight on the system. The "many, many years after the apocalypse" aesthetic is pure kino, and the game looks amazing compared to a lot of other games in the 32 bit era. The ability to rotate your view around and attack/be attacked from all directions really elevates it above traditional rail shooters. The second game is more of the same, but with some really cool graphical tricks, and Saga is a fullblown RPG.

Most of the best games on the system are exclusives, they tend to take better advantage of the hardware when compared to multiplats (which usually had the PS1 as the lead platform). There are some games that hit both systems that either run better on, or have new/interesting features on, the Saturn though. One of the best examples is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - it was ported by a b-team at Capcom with a super strict schedule, so it ended up having a lot of performance issues when compared to the PS1 version, but there were 2 massive new areas (technically 4 with the inverted castle) and a third playable character added. Its worth checking out the fan translated version (which fixes some of the major performance issues) if you're a Castlevaniafag.

It runs a little smoother, loads faster, and has a slightly better draw distance on the Saturn. That, and the Saturn's d-pad is significantly better than the PS1's.

The downsides are its missing some effects (like ejecting spent rounds after firing), and it uses mesh transparencies so if you're playing it on anything sharper than a CRT with composite video any of the transparent glass in the game is going to look like complete ass. This doesn't really come up often, although there is a level in the colony section of the game that is filled with labs with glass walls everywhere that is hilariously ugly as a result.

Amusingly enough Alien Trilogy is one of a handful of games that only uses a single SH-2,

Hmm, it sounds like the Saturn version might actually be worth choosing over the PS1 version. Unlike DHT which is unquestionably better on PS1. Then again, wasn't Alien Trilogy the first FPS to incorporate dual stick controls? And is famous now for reviews at the time calling the new control scheme terrible? Or am I thinking of a different Alien game?

>> No.9764679

>>9764643
Alien Trilogy isn't three different game types like Die Hard Trilogy is, it's a straight FPS game throughout. The 'trilogy' in the title refers to the game being split into three episodes, with each episode being based on a location from the movies. The first levels in the game start you in a colony, then partway through the game you go to a prison/metalworks, then for the last third of the game you're in an alien derelict.

>>9764658
You're thinking of Alien: Resurrection on the PS1, which did have dual stick controls. It's a good game (also probably one of the best if not the best looking games on the console), but it is BALLS HARD. The difficulty level is absolutely insane. The devs had been playtesting their own game for the entire development and they naturally got really fuckin' good at playing it, so they made the difficulty based on already having been playing the game nonstop for over a year. They never brought in outside testers so there was no one to tell them that the game was borderline impossible for new players.

It is funny that reviews bitched about a control scheme that was just a couple years away from becoming the industry standard though. I think the first game to really popularize it was TimeSplitters on the PS2.

For the Emperor!

I just started Alien Trilogy and and it’s been 20+ years since I played it last. It’s still just fun! I like it better than the other newer games (not retro) because the designers actually put movie sets in game and the enemies act like they should. And by that I mean they just kill you but you can kill them too unlike that bad Aliens Colonial Marines game, Aliens the comic book adventure, Alien: Isolation (it’s moreso like the first movie and the xeno is almost unkillable), and others.
In contrast, the DOOM 1+2 mod Aliens Trilogy is good though if you wanna try that. You even get a flashlight and auto turrets(?) just like in the movie Aliens.

I really encourage you to make this mod to your AR cartridges: https://segaxtreme.net/threads/saturn-action-replay-plus-4m-auto-dual-boot-mod.24530/
Basically, newer AR cartridges have a 2nd memory bank that is unused for whatever reason. If you go through this process, you now have a backup loader and a memory cart, and can switch back and forth without ever pulling the thing out.
It should be pretty easy if you know how to solder, although a coworker did it for me. I installed a Memory Cart Plus firmware in the 2nd bank and it works wonders, even saving directly to the cart for legit games.
Mind you, it can only boot one firmware at a time, so you'll still be forced to save on the console for backups, but it's easy to enter in memory cart form and just copy those saves to it.
This mod doesn't modify its RAM capabilities in any way so it would still work as a 1/4MB RAM regardless of the boot you choose.

>> No.9769324

>>9769310
I don't tape mine down or use a shim, but my cart slot requires you to insert the cart all the way, and then gently pull it up like a millimeter and then it works.

The Saturn's cart slot has a shitload of pins (in terms of data it's fast as fuck, which is why you can do things like save games instantly, or use it for fucking RAM of all things), but as a result once a console ages it can get very finicky. Saturn hardware is generally very rugged, they don't have any of the major issues like other /vr/ disc based consoles had (like the PS1's laser sleds wearing out or the PS2's DREs), but the cartridge slot is definitely the weak point in the Saturn's hardware and is the biggest point of failure.

A lot of it can be blamed on the design of the slot itself, but a lot of it can also be blamed on low quality third party cartridges (like the old generic 3-in-1s/4-in-1s or region bypass carts that used to be all over the place) which had thicker PCBs that weren't beveled, which would cause significantly more wear to the cartridge slot's pins when inserted. Since a lot of Saturn owners were forced to import games from Japan (especially later on in the console's life when US releases started slowing down) those carts were everywhere.

Hopefully someday there will be a hardware mod that alleviates this problem.

>> No.9769910

>>9769324
Honestly the biggest issue is simply the pin density. It makes the slot at lot more sensitive to dirty pins, dust, debris, etc. So it makes keeping it clean and the carts themselves clean a very high priority.

The slot itself generally I haven't had to ever clean, but cleaning the carts pretty much always fixes any issue I have where it doesn't read it properly. I have about 4 different Saturns with multiple official carts that I regularly swap between them. I've never had a cart I couldn't get working by just cleaning it with some rubbing alcohol and q-tips.

I think he meant authentic AR carts and not the custom carts that are a dime a dozen. I still stand by my black All-In-One cart that I bought off ebay though, it's more than paid for itself at this point. Even after I moved on to the Terraonion MODE I still have the cart permanently docked into the Saturn to handle saves, cheats, and RAM expansion, it's a quintessential accessory for getting the most out of your Saturn.

definitely get an ODE,dont bother with CDR's.
i sold my saturn a few years back, always wanted one wen they came out, eventually got one, didnt come with an AV cable, it was 12yrs before i picked one up,lol. a lot of the games i was disappointed how shit they looked, enhanced by a modern sony lcd, crt is a must. also i own a 37 sony bravia from 2007, anything thru AV looks shit, coupled with the bad screen its doubley shit, vga&hdmi is passable.

anyway CDR's i didnt have much luck, i converted rayearth from ntsc to pal and used the classic swap trick, i tried verbatim and some cheap discs from tecso/asda, and the game barely loaded up the intro would skip/jump, it may have been my pc's drive as well as the cdrs as it would only burn cdrs at 12x or 16x, i though i'd need another old drive that writes at a lower speed, all the ones ive got the lasers have had it, so chances of finding an old drive thats good is slim. also i figured i was screwed without old taiyo yuuden cdrs, which wont be easy to find, at the time the ODE's were still new so didnt seem like an option.

since selling my saturn ive got into arcade games, i realised just how many good game there are, that ive never heard of or didnt get released in the PAL region, regret selling it now, i am gonna get another one eventually, and i will get an ODE.

mine was a PAL model 1, it was the easiest to do the swap trick on, if i get another what one would anons recommend? should i get another PAL model 1? or a JAP one?

Pseudo Saturn Kai and burnt CDRs work absolutely fine if you're okay with long term usage potentially wearing out your laser quicker, I've played through countless games that way. Some games require patching with the PSK patcher utility Panzer Dragoon Saga being one of them Rayearth might be another

Go for the Japanese Saturn, there's very few games optimized for 50hz so most of the time you'll be playing games at 17% slower than their intended speed. Japanese Saturns are also a whole lot cheaper but keep in mind you'll need a step down power converter if you live in a PAL region

Yeah I only ever burn DVDs/blurays/CDs at 4x speed max. That's pretty bad. I have a LG DVD burner I got off Amazon for like $20 that does the job fine. Then I have a bluray burner with the custom firmware flashed for MDISC burning/4k .mkv ripping.
>also i figured i was screwed without old taiyo yuuden cdrs
You don't need the meme jap CDRs. The good ones aren't even made anymore. I'm pretty sure they're made in Thailand now. If you really want to be gay, you can buy the Verbatim gold """archival""" discs. If you don't need your CDr to be meme shit, just use regular Verbatim discs. If your Saturn is struggling to read CDRs, it might be time for a new laser. I don't know if anyone still makes them, but I stocked up on like 4 spares back in '17 for like $20 a pop. Otherwise an ODE might be the way to go.
>swap trick
That's a good way to kill discs and disc drives. Never once. Get a 4-in-1/Action Replay/mod chip.

I don't know why people expect reviews to be good. They're just dudes telling you their impressions on video games, it's like a friend telling you "dude this game is rad!/this game sucks!" but since zoomers don't have friends they have e-celebs now.
The only people who could possibly give good reviews are actual game developers, not journos or youtubers.
That said, yeah Dave was the only good thing out of Game Suck. Just a normal dude who had a normal life and was a chad during high school. Joe always comes off as the creep anti social nerd who somehow managed to land an asian chubby gf who left him and then he degraded himself into simping for Erin, who ended up dating Mike Matei, and Joe just went down the drain. There is a fan patched version that does the opposite (changes the game to display English prompts on Japanese consoles) if that's something you need. Buying physical Saturn games in 3+2000+20 is full retard, just get a PSK cart or an ODE.

Tomb Raider is a wash (PS1 version has a better framerate, Saturn version has a better draw distance, better controller, and no texture warping). > Emulating the Saturn

Honestly anon just get a real one. You can get Japanese Saturns in excellent condition shipped to the US for like $99. You can pay $40 for a PSK cart and then $10 for a stack of CDRs and have the entire console and its library playable on native hardware for only $150 instead of having to deal with Saturn emulation (it's ok, but it's nowhere near perfect).

To answer your question though, get an original model 2 controller and a USB converter. The Retrobit ones are ok (the newer versions anyway, the older ones apparently had a shitload of QC issues), but the original controller is the best.
