We didn't have one of these threads since last year I believe.
Now that a Mobile version is in the works, it could be a good moment to talk about this game again.

Have you ever played it? Did a vampire every try to bite you? When did you quit?

I played for a little bit in 2009ish after reading the patriotic nigras wiki that was linked on some old imageboard. I mostly hung around in the sandbox world's watching people make shit, it was more like garry's mod to me. I had fun playing around with all of the patriotic nigras griefing scripts but I never got to participate in any raids, whenever I went to their world or whatever it just seemed like a boring circlejerk.

The people I met were all deadbeat 30+ year old men who were either trannies or pretending to be a woman. Many of them were manipulative and sadistic, huge attention whores, they would outright lie about things for attention or fame, get into catfights, spread rumors or dox you if they didn’t like you. The leaders of the group always had shit taste or were assholes but they had loadsa money and would spend hundreds a month into the game for land/holding events etc making them the most influential. It was nothing but a giant attention whoring cringefest. Later I found that many of them were all on medication for autism or adhd. Many of them were manipulative and sadistic, often lying for attention or spreading rumors to discredit others. The group's leaders were often misguided with poor taste, but they held the most influence because they would spend hundreds of $$ a month to own land and hold events. It actually did live up to this way more than any other game I can think of. Are online games technically fair game for /vr/ even if they're still ongoing, as long as the original release was prior to 2008? Since the cutoff went up to there I've been wondering that. Especially when modern Second Life - even if I've only really been exploring it a bit personally since mid-2021, is nearly a completely different beast. It doesn't take much to notice that the introduction of mesh in SL transformed it into much more of an online dollhouse and bondage simulator (what with RLV) than trying to make cool shit with prims. There's still some cool stuff but it's painfully obvious that fashion is carrying a lot of weight.

Either way, very ambitious for something of its time and it's probably going to continue having some pull as long as it's basically the only notable metaverse supporting adult content; VRC is playing it real safe while NeosVR is getting fucked early in dev by a cryptofag's executive meddling. Was sort of surprised that most people prefer to communicate with text rather than voice, what with watching however many griefing videos prior. Also, the world map looks like a fucking mess with all those isolated sims away from the mainland; surprised a lot of them are still up as ghost towns, given how much it costs to have one up monthly.

>>9738515
Latest few versions of the official viewer (and Firestorm in the past several months) at least makes getting 60+ FPS reasonable if the sim isn't unoptimized garbage. Performance still isn't 'good' overall but at least it's not always sinking to 10 FPS when among a somewhat large group of people.

>Especially when modern Second Life - even if I've only really been exploring it a bit personally since mid-2021, is nearly a completely different beast
I'm calling bullshit. The only thing that's different is there is no variety. Around the peak in 2005-2008 there was way more interesting shit going on like remakes of games/anime/movies, military/clan warfare sims, sandbox building areas, gigantic castles to explore, etc. Then gradually everyone left and the only ones who remained were the degenerates that wanted to larp as furries or millionaires.

>> No.9754962

>>9754890
Anon, just because I said 'different beast' doesn't mean it was like an upgrade. More like a raptor evolving into a chicken or some shit. Emphasis on the 'dollhouse' part especially, since the marketplace and in-world shops are largely just for shit like body meshes such as Maitreya and then entire virtual fashion lines shaping clothes and body parts around them. The novelty of shit like prim torture is gone. Whatever the case, the current userbase in SL is absolutely a lot lazier, in fact it's probably one of the most passive places I've been on the internet and many conversations had were at such a glacial pace, that /po/ would've been impressed. And when it's not, it's typically younger people spamming gestures. So many people are talking through IMs instead and it says a lot when the latest 'interesting' thing of the moment to most people is like a new animal bento head mesh. Maybe the BDSM crowd has PBR to look forward to I guess?

Not to say there aren't some cool builds around, but a few of the more somewhat impressive things I've seen (as far as SL is concerned) like Go Thongs are roughly a decade old. But to be fair, given LSL I'm also not that surprised.

It's been going in that direction since the 2000s. By 2008 most of the interesting sims were already shutdown, or empty and trying to paywall their content to stay afloat despite having no players. Meanwhile, the shopping dressup shit was 95% of what you'd run into while digging through the sims and most of the player base parks their ass in either a gay nightclub or on some faggots private sim mansion larp shit chatting all day.

Nah but I can describe it. There were 2 iterations of it. The mansion and the hive.
The mansion had you enter in from a cliff and you came down on a trail that overlooked a tall grass/corn field and the mansion. I remember there was one vantage point on the trail so you could get a real good look at it before descending into the grass. IIRC it was during a sunset but it could've been night time. The field was basically the one from the RE1 intro vid. The corn field spawned in dogs and zombies that would kill you if you got in melee range of them. The only thing I remember from the mansion was the lobby spawned zombies in each corner.

The mansion got deleted and then they made the server a hive server. I don't think it's pic related but I know for sure that an area identical to pic related was the entrance to the hive. There was a dead NPC near the paywall that let you in. Basically if you didn't buy the special HUD then you couldn't go in the hive, so I never saw much more of it. When googling I found people talking about a hive server in 2018 being on it's last legs. Not sure if its the same one. It'd be damn impressive if they kept it running for a decade.

The way Discord operates panders to the absolute dredges of society in a similar way to how Reddit's updoot system panders to consensus minded retards. It's not unusual to join a voice chat for something innocent like a gamedev server only for it to be filled with a bunch of dudes horny posting and you're not sure if one of them is a tranny trying to sound like a woman or a minor. And that's just the shit they're showing in the public not-hidden channel.

I started playing in 2007 after seeing it in the news, but had a shitty PC that would lag massively, so didn't explore much. Got a laptop in 2008, and my favorite part was flying aimlessly and finding new things, or searching for stuff I liked in the search engine they have. Found a place where I could get free cyberpunk clothes and effects, a Naruto game place and would have my character dance in a hardstyle disco I found, while I was practicing hardstyle shuffle irl.
Eventually started other online games, went back there a few years later, pretty much a desert, the disco didn't even have music nor lights anymore.

Just a reminder that there's Worlds, which is down, not sure if forever. It came way before Second Life, but without the currency aspect. I discovered it during lockdown and it was mostly dead and full of weird rooms, making it a fun experience in late evenings.

I saw it on the Discovery channels. It was also on the Daily Show once because the PN griefed a politician. Is this some sort of viral marketing campaign Linden Labs had? Why did so many mainstream TV shows have it on? The only other game that got this much attention was WoW.

Only a few people used the PN forums, everyone else stuck with IRC. Back in 2007 when mootykip was exposed, people just flat out stopped using it and kept communication in private channels. This was primarily because the PN attracted a shitload of spies that would attempt to get into the group so all operations, planning, script sharing was done peer to peer.

Had a look around and it seems like they are using the worlds.com website for something new, but they kept the old versions on another link. If you guys want to explore, you need to download it here.

I was on the IRC a little bit. Didn't know about the spying and secret channels though, so I just assumed the PN was basically dead (this was probably around 2008-09). I'm surprised that shit went on until 2011. I think the only time I ever joined them in game was to find a sim to setup a new fort longcat in.

>Didn't know about the spying and secret channels though,
Yeah PN got compromised really early on. There was a few specific individuals who got into the organization but were spying on behalf of JLU and Furtopia. One of them being Yaranaika -a person I and a specific other really suspected by June-July 2007 - who Mootykips trusted, but eventually got betrayed and doxxed by him. The irony here is that Mootykips created the PN for selfish intent (he was a sim co-owner and wanted to use griefing to drive down rival sim prices) and after he got doxxed, he tried to disband the PN. But the PN refused and he hated the group after. He tried to harness 4chan to his own bidding and immediately got bullied for it. Same for Nexus. The true MVP of PN was Frizzlefry who helped carry the group in 2008-2011.

If you played it in the early 00's, when it was of interest to people besides the same weirdos who will sexually roleplay on anything you might have seen:
"Jobs" where you could earn a really small amount of Linden currency by making your character do a (non-sexual) animation. They were used to draw attention to areas by pumping the player count.
Casinos where you could gamble for Linden money. It took longer than expected for them to ban what was blatantly unlicensed gambling running on servers in the United States.
The "3 walls plastered in vending machines" architecture used to be very common back then, you can see remnants of it mostly on areas that are part of the mainland. Furry areas were always consistently high quality by comparison because they take their yiffing seriously.

Remember this. It was usually shit like a janitor washing the floor, a barkeep washing the counter and the most common one being a dancing animation. The pay was always some egregiously low shit like 1 linden ($0.1)/hr. Still infinitely times the amount a jannie gets paid.
>The "3 walls plastered in vending machines" architecture used to be very common back then, you can see remnants of it mostly on areas that are part of the mainland. Furry areas were always consistently high quality by comparison because they take their yiffing seriously.
I for sure remember these. They were fucking EVERYWHERE. I wouldn't be surprised if they were still everywhere. The only place I did not see them was on the private land some retard would LARP as their house with and even then you still had a decent chance of seeing one.

actually, a lot of the trolls in the bigger groups like PN and TWH were pretty pathetic people unironically. Many of them were doxed, so many of them lived with their parents ( I know some who do still now), were physically dysgenic and on drugs (like IHM), were into unironic zooaphilia. A lot of these people weren't even interesting trolls - but people who could not code, but got leeched off people who did all the work for them. A lot of these groups died because there weren't any talented keep it going.

Even without asking people, just by checking the Picks in the profiles of the people who were in charge of that sim, you could still find some screenshots.

For example, picrelated Dragon Ball sim stopped existing more than 10 years ago, but I found that screenshot by checking the profiles of the creators of the stuff I got from there.
