I just bought two Model 2 megadrives, one Model 1, and a Saturn on ebay... for $50.

It feels like a heavy price, but I've been getting desperate for a Saturn, and the Model 1 is a nice bonus if it works. If so, I can sell the extra model 2s and my existing model 2 for something like $15 to $20 each, depending on how many complete sets of cables, extra controllers, etc. I have for them.

>> No.972891

i picked up the following at the local flea market last sunday...

2 platinum licensed gamecube controllers, 100% functional, no loose joy sticks or sticky buttons) for 5 bucks together.

about 10 random filler NES games, with batman being the only notable one. guy wanted a dollar a piece, so, i grabbed 10 and he agreed on 8 bucks for them all.

a few sega genesis games. Bubsy, Lion King, and a couple others. 3 bucks each.

dragon Warrior 3 and 4 on the NES for..... 5 bucks a pop from some random ass guy. fuckin' DEAL. he wanted 5 bucks a game and had a table of quite a few, but those two were mixed in, and, NO SHIT i jumped on them.

>> No.972910

oh, also, while I was at the flea market, I saw a Sears Tele-Games intellivision console that came with about 20 games and all the inlays for them.

I have NO information at all regarding the sears telegames systems... he wanted 40 bucks for the lot, and yeah, maybe I should have done it, but I decided not to, mainly because my focus point of collecting is NES games, and I'd rather spend 40 on a rather uncommon game than on a console that'll just sit around.

Got Street Fighter II' at Goodwill yesterday for $3.

Thinking about taking up a craigslist offer with:

>NES in bad condition
>SNES with video cable.
>SNES games: Ken Griffey Baseball, Hole in One Golf, Pro Quarterback, John Madden 93, NCAA Basketball
>Sega Saturn games: Madden, NHL, Quake, Virtua Fighter, Virtual Cop, Daytona USA Racing
>Virtual Pinball for Sega Genesis
...and some unsellable old madden/baseball/whatever games for 360 and PS2 and such, including one of those movie UMDs for PSP (ha!) and a 360 HD-DVD player

For $30, all together, as a set. I want to ask the guy to split off the useless stuff (I only want the Sega and Nintendo stuff, obviously), but I have a feeling he knows it's worthless, so I doubt he'd be willing to come down a little bit for leaving that stuff out, since he'd probably just throw it away anyway.

Should I offer him $20 for "just the Sega and Nintendo stuff," or do you think that would make me seem desperate?

Got some pretty decent scores lately, my camera's a shitty vivitar, only things that are tough to make out are the top left title, which is the Japanese two-disc soundtrack for FFX. Next to that is Tales of Legendia. Below that are some boxed Genesis titles, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for the NES, and Legend of Mana. Bottom right is a Japanese four-disc soundtrack for FFVII (they could fit the entire game on 3 discs, why 4 for just the soundtrack?) and below that are some equally Jappo Evangelion soundtrack discs. The barn I got all this from had lots of old imported anime soundtrack CDs, there was stuff Patlabor, Battle Saber Marionette, Gundam Wing, and Ranma ½. I picked up the Ranma ½ soundtracks, wasn't really interested in the other stuff.

Altogether I spent about $40 on this pile.

So, uh. I may be going to a car boot sale tomorrow. Any advice on how to get some vidya, also for someone in the UK.

From what I know, act cool, go early (I can go earlier at 6am, instead of 9am, but it would cost £2 for entrance fee, is it worth it?) and if they don't have any video games, ask?

I've seen it before, but I've never gone, they had tons of tables and stalls, mostly clothes from what I saw, but I never know.

So, any advice.

Anyhow, on topic. I bought Spiderman for the PS1 for £1.50 (I know, but it was for someone else) and a Dreamcast Fishing Controller for £1.50.

Not part of the finds discussion; but i thought MMBN3 was pretty great, 2 was already great and 3 made it even better in some aspects, Navi customiser a few continuity nods here and there....surprisingly they didn't overdub the Japanese aspects of the game.

Didn't like the whole socialization aspect, trading exclusive NCParts for others, the after-quest definitely felt more substantial compared to 2's, something seems off about it and i'm not talking about some of the overpowered chip combos such as anything involving FlashMan...

Though with 4 being pretty infamous, makes you wonder how much of the series games are known because they're good, or if they're bad, 5 felt slightly chunky but less so than 4, but Liberation battles just felt long winded, never saw 6 in stores...how would it compare to the rest of the series, ignoring the removal of Boktai-related things?

Other note, a few years ago i got loose copies of Banjo-Kazooie and Final Fantasy Tactics advance for about £8, would ebay count? otherwise i also got MMBN3 White, Wario Land, Warioware: Twisted and Azure Dreams (GBC) for £25. only MMBN and Twisted had their boxes though.

My only regret recently was that i didn't pick up a loose copy of the GBA Pokemon mystery dungeon, nor picked up a boxed Pokemon Black at a costconverters or a priceconverter or whatever they're called for £9...

they also had a Pikachu N64 with Bugs' Life and Clayfighter for something like £60 >,>.

Picked this up today for $25. It was my last yard sale for the day too.

The family had two DS games on a table for 25 cents each so I asked them if they had any other kind of games they would be willing to sell. The guy just said: "You wouldn't be interested in old Nintendo games would you?" I just smiled and told him yes, and he ran inside and brought out a box with all of this in it.

He said he couldn't get the system to work anymore so he just asked for $25. I happily paid the man and we talked for a few minutes about old video games. He claimed to have a big collection of old games (100+ PS2 games, and maybe some others) in a storage unit that he didn't play anymore either since he has kids now and they play more with the newer consoles together. The lady with him also mentioned she thinks she has some Atari games. They asked for my contact info and said they would be looking through more of their old stuff soon and might call me if they find anything.

I went home to try out the system. Didn't read games like he said. I peeked inside the slot and saw something in the back. Turns out there was an old sticker that was caught in the 72 pin connector. I carefully pulled it out with a needle and cleaned the pins with alcohol. It works fine now.

Jesus christ. So the rumors are true, some people really just don't think it's worth it to put their old video games out.

I kind of hate asking people anything at sales, other than exchanging pleasant greetings and such, because I don't want to seem too interested only to back out later, but I guess if it pays off like this, it's worth it. I've got like a dozen consoles piled up here, but I can't find cartridges anywhere!

Damn. I feel like I should've tried this at the sale I drove 20 miles to today because they said they had "video games" that turned out to be a huge stack of PS2 games I wasn't interested in

>some people really just don't think it's worth it to put their old video games out.

That's actually what the guy said. He didn't think anyone would want this stuff so he didn't put it out. Coincidentally, on my very first trip retro hunting, I met another lady who said the same thing to me as she brought out a box full of pic related. She sold it for $20 because she also didn't know if it worked (which it does and is the one I play on now. Maybe it's just a trend where I live. I dunno).

But anyway, the lesson to be learned here: Don't be afraid to ask for video games. Worst thing that can happen is they say no. That or they have do some, but they're priced ridiculously high or they're not games you want. Just remain calm and collected. Show them you are interested but don't act over anxious either and don't be afraid to just walk away if the deal isn't what you are looking for.

Another tip I found to be useful is to just bring a game with you. It's a great talking point and gives the person an example of the kind of games you are interested in buying (who may not know too much about retro games or doesn't understand what type they are. I asked for Nintendo games once and they brought out Wii games. I polity declined, and went on to the next sale.)

Just won this today on eBay, but I'm picking it up next weekend.

All I know is that it is a working custom-built 486, and it appears to be a late model.

>> No.983886

>>983880
Are people actually interested in buying these kinds of things? Because I have dozens of them that I really need to get rid of. I threw out the monitors on "hazardous waste amnesty day" at the dump (I kept a couple for myself), but I have a huge stack of 486 and Pentium era CPU towers with keyboards and such to go with.

How much did you pay for that? Was the bidding pretty competitive? More importantly, why? What are you gonna use it for? Playing DOS games without an emulator?

>> No.983906

>>983886
Retrocomputing collectors like myself love that shit.

I was the only bidder, because it was local-pickup only in Indiana, but fully working 486 systems regularly go for $100+ on eBay. I paid $15.

Pentium IIs and newer are pretty easy to come by, but anything older is getting harder to find.

People use the machines for DOS gaming, general nostalgia, BBSing, and just general collecting.

There are communities like VOGONS, VintageComputer, and YouTube personalities like Lazy Game Reviews and Ancient DOS Games that talk a lot about the subject.

Here's a video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxMXJd4GDyc

Playing DOS games on DOSBox on an LCD isn't the same as playing them on a real 486 with a real CRT display. The emulation isn't perfect, either.

>> No.983948

>>983906
Wow, this is nuts. I collected this stuff when I was a kid, which was around the time when every middle class household got their first windows XP computer and threw out their old beige box. I built up a huge collection of machines ranging from 486 to Pentium II, and I never paid more than $10 for any of them (a lotta people just gave them to me for free because they thought it was nice to make a little kid happy I guess?). I never knew they could be sold for any substantial amount of money today!

I also saved up a ton of components like soundblasters and 3dfx graphics cards. Can I sell those for top dollar too, or is it better to just install them in the boxes and say that the PCs come with (like how consoles complete with controllers and cables often sell for more than the net price of those things bought separately)?

Most of the machines are also not exactly in working order, since a lot of their harddrives fell victim to my early experiments with Linux. Are the people buying these things tech savvy enough not to care about hardware, or would I be better off installing windows 95 or DOS 6 or whatever on all of them? They'll work fine after a format and with an OS installed, I'm sure.

This is pretty exciting! I can't wait to tell my parents that all the crap I've been keeping in their basement since I was 12 is actually going to pay off!

Well, certain things are more valuable to collectors; it really depends on rarity, as well as demand.

A SB16 is pretty common, you'll probably get $10.

A Roland MT-32 or Gravis Ultrasound? $80+

3Dfx cards go anywhere from $15 to $100 depending on the model. Last week I paid $30 for a Voodoo 3 3000 to put in my Pentium II machine. VGA cards are pretty cheap ~$15, but SVGA cards can fetch quite a bit more.

Also, Aureal Vortex 2 sound cards go for at least $25 a piece.

I would recommend wiping Linux and putting the most appropriate Win 9x OS on it. So, a 386 should have 3.1, a 486DX 3.1 or 95, and anything better than a mid-range Pentium 1 should probably be running 98.

This is insane! I can't believe this stuff is actually worth money! I mean, I should've guessed, since retro console gaming is a thing, but...

The only problem is that it's going to be a lot of trouble to pack all this stuff up and sell it online. I guess that comes with the territory. Maybe I can do it over Christmas holidays or something. Either that, or find somebody to buy it as a lot? I know I'll get less money, but it might be worth it for the work it would save (and the fact that I don't really know what is worth what).

What's wrong with making an offer? You honestly didn't know what it was worth, so if your offer was way off and she actually knew better, she'd just think you were uninformed and politely say "no, I can't do that," and you'd be on your merry way. If you're worried about pissing someone off while you're trying to purchase other items, just wait until you've already purchased the other items and then add in "Oh, by the way, I see you have a [thing]..."

Of course, when you can get away with it, isn't it generally better to ask people to name their price and THEN you make your offer? Because sometimes people offer way less than you were planning to pay in the first place.

I've checked the discs, they're all in working condition. Clockwork Knight was the first thing I popped in, and I played that for about two hours non-stop. The game kicks my ass, and I love it. Secrets, puzzles, awesome music, I'm really not sure why this game didn't spell success for the Saturn. It's basically the Toy Story game I always wanted.

Anyway, here are both of the controllers. The 3D Controller hasn't been used more than one or two times, just had a little dust on it, and otherwise looks like a brand new controller. The standard pad is actually kind of weird, the A B C buttons are a lot shallower than the US controller I own (Model 2, the one that's supposedly identical to these Japanese models). This makes what was an already comfortable controller an even more comfortable controller. It's my new favorite Saturn pad, by far. I can't find any reason why the buttons are shallower, but they are.

But I'm not done yet...

I was going to get Biohazard and Tactics Ogre for pretty cheap, too, but most of the auctions were ending around the same time and I was most concerned about winning Parodius and Donpachi.

Shipping from Japan is a fucking killer, though. It's not like I didn't already know it was awful since I order so much from there but it adds up. I hope that I'm refunded, since they had cheaper shipping the more you buy.

That's a pretty nice price for DonPachi. I sprung on a cheap copy of DoDonPachi, and while it's not in great condition, I'm still damn happy about it.

>Halfprice Books

I visited my sister in Richardson Texas and she took me and my Mom to some giant Halfprice Books warehouse. It was amazing, there was so much stuff. Didn't find too many video games, but I love the store so much. Shame we don't have one here.

I'm in Dallas. Last week was my first visit to my local Halfprice Books I was pretty surprised by the variety of games that were there. It had NES, SNES, Sega, Game Boy, GBC, GBA, PSP, PS1, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, 360, PS3, & loads of PC games. The prices there were decent too. Some were a bit high while other were below what you'd pay on Amazon or Ebay.

Around the Philly area, looking for resources to get info on yard sales and flea markets.

I popped into a goodwill today, found spider-man for pc...didn't even bother.

Would an area like this be picked clean or am I not looking hard enough?

Halp.

Yes, but I have known lots of friends and acquaintances who have been interested in collecting console games, but few aside from myself who have collected "retro" PCs and PC parts.

I mean, by your logic, it's conceivable that someone collects toenail clippings, but I would still be surprised if someone offered me good money for my own.

>> No.1001560

>>1001528
If it's picked clean I suggest going online. Join a video game trading site, better yet join a retro video game group on Facebook (preferably in your area). That'll raise your chances of getting older games for cheap. Game collectors like helping each other out. Most all have doubles of games. My friend & I are collectors & we give each other games if the other needs one.

I'll go on ahead & suggest jjgames while I'm at it. There's also Pawnshops, Antique stores, Craigslist, Amazon, & Ebay. If you want to get good prices online check daily. I've gotten Alot of games for $3-$4 (free shipping with Prime).

Antique stores? I would have never even considered that.

I know of a few pawn shops in the area...really trying to feel out the thrift stores first.
Craigslist is very hit or miss...there's a dude who has a massive collection selling stuff at retail ($30 mega man, $25 legend of Zelda, etc.)

Found Miracle Piano at a local thrift shop the other day. They were asking $70, which is definitely more than I'm willing to spend for a game that I'll never end up playing. I am a musician, though, so it'd be pretty cool to somehow rig up the piano as a MIDI controller..

It's not designed to, but it should technically work if you make an extension cable and set your PS2 to RGB. There are probably people using it with PS3s too for all I know, though the screen is 4:3 and not hi-res.

Would you rather I just not buy them off the old gentlemen and let him throw them back in his garage to be destroyed? I also plan to buy a Genesis soon, since my old one I had as a kid was destroyed relatively recently when the house was cleaned out.

Haha, that is true, it was kind of an under-the-radar pack-in. It came with the Wii around 2011 when they were bundled with New Super Mario Bros. It's one of the benefits of working at fucking Gamestop. People would sometimes bring in their systems complete and, naturally, nobody ever bothered opening the soundtrack up or cared about trading them in with the system, so they're free for the taking.

It's very, very good. I was shocked to find out that it's the legitimate Japanese soundtrack. I figured it would just be a cheap sampler with only a few tracks. You can probably find a copy on Amazon or eBay for less than $5.

IMO, even more so than going early, the best trick is to not go hunting with huge expectations.
If you go out thinking you're going to find Panzer Dragoon, Earthbound, and Conker CIB for $5, you're setting yourself up for disappointment and later despair.
