Cosmo Police Galivan was a Metroid style action adventure games with levels, experience points, an equipment menu with various weapons.

It came out in 1988.

With that said, I get what OP means. Classic Castlevania is very obviously a Ghost&Goblin's clone, anyone denying that is fooling himself. After G&G went the Metroid route, so did Castlevania....

I think it's because "psx" sounds cool, whereas "ps" or "ps1" is blander. the "X" adds some sort of mystical or cool factor to it.
Though it's weird that people only do it for the PS1 and not the N64. In the late 90s and even earl 00s, some magazines and people still called it "the Ultra", "Ultra 64" or "NU64", which also sounds very cool, but over time that early codename was mostly forgotten in favor of the final N64 name, but the PS"X" is still used today. But yeah it's not the official abbreviation,

Wonderboy games are even older, and before that you had those adventure platformers like Dizzy, where you collect items and backtrack to use them.

not sure, since demon's crest is actually a good game and SOTN is very dull easy and bloated with rpg elements

The difference is that
>Sony told everyone to use "PSX"
>Nintendo told everyone NOT to use "ultra64" anymore

unless you're speedrunning SOTN you won't get much mileage out of the gameplay, its braindead easy (hence why it became popular)

shit dawg, all this time i thought cv was its own ball of shit, never once did i think it was directly influenced by gng. Though both action platformer's they feel very distinct.

Here is a quizz show for you. Guess the name of the game:

>It's a sidescrolling action platformer
>which focuses more on the action than on the platforming
>known for its difficulty
>with a horror theme

That and Konami and Capcom have been copying each others since forever. GNG was a hit when CV was made.

Yeah i can see where you're coming from. Back in the early days all the dev's were riffing on each other and i can't deny gng's impact on me as a kid when i first laid eyes on it in a cabinet.
When i found out it was available for nes i bugged my parents to get me a copy. I was 8 or 9 and boy was I disappointed with how terrible it looked compared with its arcade counterpart and crushed with just how hard and janky it was. I don't think i ever made it past level 3.
i still play gng on mame as i don't think there's anything else quite like it.

What is Castlevania 2? What is Vampire Killer for the MSX? It's not like Castlevania was a stranger to the genre, and there were numerous other similar games from which one could draw inspiration.
Demon Crest is much closer to Mega-Man X3.
