If anyone's interesting I'm still working on my MM5 romhack which aims to recreating new stages for the game in a classic style and exploiting the original gimmicks and possibilities which remained unexploited in the original; all this while being silghtly more challenging than the original while remaining fair (I also want to create new music and change bosses AI so that they play more like in MM3 and 4 where the Charge shot doesn't rape them and fights are more fun)

Progress is going slowly but steadily on my MM5 romhack. I've been busy replacing structures I hadn't used by new ones (using the original games graphics as usual) that would fit in more in my level layouts so that everything "sticks" together and looks more solid and not amateurish. It's a long work just for small details but on a big scale it's worth it for the overall quality.
Pic related: an example, compare the upper left part of the screen. On the left: using the original games structures, on the right, modifying them a little bit (like I explained) so that it fits with the level design and layout I had in mind.

The game is on the GBA and has a limited field of vision. While most megaman games activate enemies after they enter the players field of vision to give the player a chance to react to the new information, the Zero series activates enemies well outside your field of vision, so if you so much as dash you run the risk of running into an enemy and taking damage. This becomes more frustrating since you're working on an arcane rank system that judges you on speed and lost health making S rank nearly Iimpossible to attain short of memorizing enemy placement and movement patterns

Oh I see what you're getting at,no hit runs on zero 2 was fucking hard as hell because of that. Megaman and Bass suffered from that too but at least that had a SNES version

I want to and I'll try but I can't promess anything.
Creating new level layouts and musics are one thing I know I can do, but changing weapons and bosses is more difficult (especially bosses).

I'm not going to lie, I never got to play Mega Man much growing up, so which game should I begin with? I've got a gut feeling that MM2 on Difficult would be a good starting point, but I'm not too sure.

I'd like to finish the original 6 NES games without continues before I move on to anything else.

2 is a good choice, but here are the other options. If you want an easier but slightly more underwheliming experience you can start with 5 or 6. 4 is around the same difficulty as 2 for me and 1 and 3 are the hardest of the bunch, so pick your poison and good luck!

FLASH FACTS

Most of the entries in the Robot Master Field Guide were written by "NBD Nytrayn" of MMNetwork. He also seems to be a friend of Ian Flynn, who writes the Mega Man comic. The comic (or at least the comic's writer) may actually have a small influence on the Classic series' American canon.

I remember playing it on Normal a very, very long time ago. The buster did massive chunks of damage to everything. I believe that Normal is Easy and Difficult is Normal in some regions, which would really make sense! Starting from the beginning seems like an idea, but I hear that MM1 is especially brutal. ah yes that boss was a pain. I actually grinded to buy the max of every item before starting the wily stages. That boss becomes pretty easy once BEAT picks you up and if you use that rocket weapon.

PROTIP : you can easily get max E tanks and M tanks in the wily stage just before the boss rush by picking them up and then committing sudoku and use continues, since E and M tanks are kept after con tinues; so, unless you want to start the last wily stage with more than 2 lives, feel free to use all your tanks before that stage.

Not when Zero offing himself was a running gag for the first five games.

I'm of the school of though that X is just Rock upgraded. Makes more sense to me anyway. Light would never replace Rock, and as dickish as Capcom has been they'd never made it canon that Mega Man dies losing to Zero or something.

I love MMZ's art direction, personally. They wanted their own style that was still recognizably Megaman, and they succeeded very well.

It's my favorite series, at least partially thanks to the art.

I liked the first two Zero games, and lost interest with 3 and 4. Zero 2 though is really good, and one of the better Megaman X games imo. Yes I know what I'm saying.

My favorites are probably Mega Man 1-3; Mega Man X1 and X4; and Zero 2. For me, the series' quality is fairly sequential: Classic > X > Zero > others.

The NES games are all generally good, and I think MM7 is a fun game if a little unpolished. Never played MM8.

Favorite Robot Master are probably Pharaoh Man, Napalm Man, and Knight Man. They look very cool, and cool is what counts.

It's hard to pick a favorite music track, but probably Spark Mandrill's theme, Mr. X's theme, Wily 2 from MM4, and Snake Man!

I become frustrated when I get below a 100 in a Zero series mission. I can't play the games anymore because I keep repeating the same mission and never progress.

In Zero 3 you need a 100 in each mission using only the buster to unlock a certain mini-game. How the fuck do you accomplish that?

MegaMan X is probably my favorite 2D platformer of all time.
MegaMan X and Zero are both really good, I refuse to pick one over the other.

I've never played Battle Network or Star Force and I never will.
BubbleMan and HardMan. Both of them are the sore thumbs in their respective games which had otherwise top-notch casts. Yes, top-notch cast includes TopMan.

Upon writing this, I actually have to openly wonder what is it about the classic robot masters that make them so memorable. Seriously, I like the X and Zero series better overall, and I always thought the Zero series had a top-notch atmosphere and setting. I always rejected the classic series as being to cliche in it's setting. But, there's something about the characters, even though they are not elaborated upon in the game at all (where in MM2 does it state AirMan likes menko) that makes them excellently lovable. Just a thought.

In fact, I don't think many Japanese companies really care about what kind of hentai doujinshi an artist draws. The manga artist for one of the Pokemon mangas draws both lolicon and shotacon. And then you have Urushihara Satoshi, whom I'm quite sure many of you would recognize his art, who worked on Cybernator/Assault Suits Valken, and the Langrisser and Growlanser series, the latter two of which he's drawn a bit of smut of.

For me, the big draw that the Classic series has over all the others is music. As much as I like the music from some of the later games, all of the Classic series games that I've played (with the exception of Mega Man 8) all have soundtracks that are just amazing and I can listen to those songs over and over again without them getting old.

There's a torrent on The Pirate bay. There's a few seeders giving decent speeds.

Warning: They milked these games a bit. They easily could have put them on one disk, but they chose to release each game on a separate disk. So it's a bit inefficient for space. 2.7 GB. But I would say they're the ultimate versions. Also it's in Japanese, so use the gamefaqs guide to navigate the menus.

Found one thing I really don't like. There's two gameplay modes, Original and Navi. Original mode is the original game, but it has sprite flicker. Navi Mode is babby easy mode, with a lot of annoying extra shit you don't need. BUT it has sprite flicker removed. I'd love the original game with no sprite flicker, and this totally should have been an option in the menu.

It has its good points so far, and the stage textures are really good, but the stage design is a little bullshitty in parts, and it has MM1 spikes where you die even if you're temporarily invulnerable.

MM2 is that game I keep replaying not because it's particularly challenging, but because I like how everything works and it's not too hard and sometimes it's just nice to go down that road again.
Minus Infinity is just amazing for the sheer amount put into it, and is also really challenging and fun.
