Just beat this game. One of my favorite games of all time now. Loved pretty much every second of it.

Xenogears thread?

Been looking to play something. What's the combat like? Turned based or...?

Ya it's turn based, but you have a meter that fills up telling you how long until your turn comes up, like FF, but unlike FF, it isn't in real time.

The combat consists of picking a light, medium, or heavy attack, with each action taking up a certain amount of points (light takes 1, medium takes 2, etc.). This leads into a cool combo system, when you learn deathblows, which are button combination attacks that deal tons of damage. You have to learn this deathblows by performing light, medium, and heavy attacks a certain amount of times, though. There is also magic some characters can use if you don't want to be a physical attacker and use deathblows.

The combat shines in equipment management, though. I find that Xenogears really excels at this. I would easily spend 10+ minutes just optimizing my party out.

There is also mecha combat in the game which is cool and has it's own seperate amount of depth to it.

Overall I really liked the combat in this game, even though it was clear that it's story heavy. The combo system is very cool and all the deathblows are beautifully animated and pretty t watch every time. The gameplay isn't as 'fun' as a Tales game, but it's better than most JRPGs, especially when it comes to equipment management.

Yeah, it's turn-based, but it's ATB in the sense that everyone has a progress bar for their turns. So rather than just going in a set order, faster characters will get more turns.

The combat is like a mock-fighting game where you enter button sequences to do "Deathblows", but really it's pretty standard JRPG stuff for its time. There's two modes of combat (on foot and in "gears") but they are not wildly different on a fundamental level.

Except fuel. Fucking fuel.

>that supreme instant when you realize disc 2 is not going to be like disc 1 at all

Even 15-year-old me was disheartened.

You actually had problems with fuel management? LOL

There's a few places where you can fucked even if you're smart. The two I can think of off the top of my head are Fei vs. Gebler on the cliffs and the quartet of 2v2 fights when you go after the second Gate.

Its a great game, but also depressing how nothing has been able to match it since... and most likely never will given the way the industry is heading.

I liked both discs, the second gave the story a much more epic feel because the events were on a global scale.

>> No.973228

Last time I put that disc into my Playstation, I think I left off at Deus (without fuel tank guard thingies). So, yeah. That's a thing.

Disc 1 had most of the gameplay while disc 2 had most of the story. The gameplay was pretty much as mediocre as JRPGs can be so I don't really get people who complain about disc 2.

15 year old me was WAY to happy about Citan getting his sword. Oh hell yea.
>Those gear fights
>Dat ID cutscene
>Emeralda

My team was,
Fei, Citan, and Billy. Billy was the man.

I liked disc 2.

>> No.973560

So, who's to blame for Xenogears' rushed production? I heard they decided to target the budget towards FFVIII instead of this.

>> No.973579

>>973560
I don't really believe into that. Imagine if everything told in disc 2 had full on gameplay like disc 1. The game would easily be over 100 hours long, which is just too damn long.
