What handhelds are we playing on today /vr/bros? What games? Thinking of consooming another handheld you don't need soon?

I'm playing Mr. Driller and Code Veronica on my RP3+, Gunbird and 3rd Strike on my POWkiddy A12.

I'm going to replace my smartphone of 3 years, a Samsung Galaxy M30, for a brand new one of similar specifications, just newer hardware pieces and software in it, a Samsung Galaxy A14. I didn't want to replace my current one, but it hasn't been working well, mostly the battery, it only charges when turned off, and can't be powered on unless I plug it in too... it's nothing major, but I take it as a sign, a red flag, that I should look into a replacement before things get worse, as even after sending it to repair I was essentially told that once it starts acting like that it doesn't really stop. I'm still fond of my Samsung Galaxy M30 though, so I don't want to leave it rotting somewhere dark, I want to keep it, just not as my main phone... so I'll turn it into an emulation machine, with some newer Android titles here and there, and for that I'm thinking of getting either a MOCUTE-060 or an IPEGA-PG9167 controller to turn it into a full handheld console, as they're both cheap options, so if I end up not liking it much it's still fine because I didn't spend much.

RP2+ was 8 months after the original RP2, which is totally fair in the world of chinkhelds. 3 months between RP3 and RP3+ understandably resulted in a lot of asshurt, but it's because the RP3 was supposed to ship a long time ago along with the RP2+ and were stuck with a bunch of stock as a result, while they also had to release the RP3+ since the RG505 was about to come out. That said, the RP2+, RP3, and RP3+ are all really good products regardless of what comes after, and this tease in particular is for a clamshell formfactor containing the same chip as the RP3+ rather than a RP3++/RP4 or something.

like I said, its big but its still a portable device. if you value that aspect then its good. its just if you have a console in mind that you want to emulate (anything ps1 and below) then there's more of a reason to buy a smaller device. A steamdeck does more than just emulation though, its pretty much a portable PC that can play pc games as well (mainly steam games)

I kind of sound like a shill right now even though I don't own one myself, but I can definitely see the value of it.

If money doesn’t matter then you could also look at other handheld PCs like the ayaneos, GPD win 4 or others. There’s quite a few that are more powerful than the steam deck but cost like twice as much. not strictly a "handheld" question, but I'm choosing a new phone right now and I'm going to use it for emulation a lot. I've been out of the loop and it seems like Android phones get 90hz / 120hz screens now. are they any better / worse for emulation in general? any emulators that can put play stuff like PSX in 90 or 120 fps? also, while we're at it: IPS or AMOLED for retro games?

>> No.9734467

>>9734423
90hz screens might fuck with games intended to run at 60hz, but 120hz screens are fine.

The RG353P curiously has a 122hz or 124hz screen or something. It's known to cause some odd display issues in Retroarch if you don't set a "sync to device refresh rate" setting to compensate.

No harm going IPS or AMOLED if you're going to use a phone for gaming. You'll end up using standalone emulators or Retroarch anyway.

huh. any point in it though? 3rd-4th gen likely won't benefit from it, right? I don't even know what's the current state of emulation over 60fps for 5th gen and higher.
>No harm going IPS or AMOLED if you're going to use a phone for gaming. You'll end up using standalone emulators or Retroarch anyway.
OK, but I meant, what is a better screen for gaming (if any)? long time ago IPS was often hated for slow response rates and lack of depth in blacks, but it's been almost a decade now and it sounds like AMOLED and IPS have more or less resolved their issues.

It's always better to have a larger battery and going from 2100mAh to 2600mAh is a 24% increase in the battery life. Also, GarlicOS has a overclock option, so if you want to play for more hours with that option enabled an larger battery is really good to have.

Looking at the promo pics for the Mini +, the transparent black one is identical to what you actually get, including how frosted/blurry the plastic is. But that purple one is a complete lie. It looks like the GBC Atomic Purple, but it's a darker version of the GBA Fuchsia (bubblegum pink at launch). People are actually already dying the shell to change its colour within a day of getting theirs.

A real shame because the promo shot made it look like the best colour ever. But it's not even the colour being wrong, it's not even the same translucently at all.

Having my chinkshit handheld for the last 5 days has really left me wanting a more premium one with more features.
I think I would pay like 600 for one with 5g, nfc, good camera, bit more battery, and probably some other things I'm forgetting
Sadly nothing exists
I could really just replace my phone with one basically is the idea. While it may seem impracticable, I don't mean permanently, but I could have the choice of either and just swap the Sim between my phone and the console.

Is this as simple as tranfering from phone to handheld through a usb c to usb c or will i need some adapter shit or have to use a pc? I have been playing Metroid Fusion with Integer scaling and oled on both Nintendo Switch 720p and a Galaxy A52 1080p, and... It's so hard to go back to the RG351v.
I'm starting to get why people used to swear by the Vita's OLED screen. While that 640x480 screen is great for GB/GBC with bezels and Playstation games, GBA does not look great, even with the lcd3x shader.

Other than that, last weekend I upgraded the firmware on the old EZ Flash IV.

I know what you mean, the 21:9 aspect ratio most smartphones have isn't ideal for 4:3 classics, the reason I'm going for it is because these controllers, like the IPEGA-PG9167 and the MOCUTE-060 are about 1/3 of the price of the cheapest handheld I can get where I live, so it makes sense to get into handhelds with something cheap first, to see if I like it or not. In the mean time I'll try to play them streched, not up to 21:9 because that'd be too much, but over the years I got used to playing 4:3 classics streched up to 16:9 so that should do the trick and eliminate most negative space on screen.

>> No.9737150

>>9737145
Cut out a 640x480 4:3 display in 3.5" in paper and put it over the smartphone, you might still have a larger picture.
Also, because of the better hardware, you can emulate more demanding systems.
Also, because of the higher pixel density, you might be able to use a better scaling by just 3x or 4x the pixels. Or even use nice shaders.

- New 3DS has poor quality control with screens. Expect to see bright and darkened areas shortly after using it for the first time. The top screen has a yellowish tint. I don't know if New 2DS XL improved on the screen. GB and GBA games emulate well or work natively with GBA runner, but there will be blurred stretching (you can modify the scaling technique if you hack it). I tried at least one snes game with high resolution mode and it seemed to run ok, but it may have been using an older version of Snes 9x

- I have the RG351V. It has a good 640x480 screen. PSX and 240p(ish) consoles will look great, but GBA won't (can't use integer scaling). If that's your thing, other models have a better resolution for GBA. Don't get it if sound glitches annoy it. You could get one of the other anbernic models that have a better resolution for GBA games

If you don't care about emulating PSX (I tried on the new 3ds, was super slow) and don't mind creating your own injects, the 3DS may be a better choice than a an RG351. You would have the entire DS and 3DS catalogue available, on top of the not very demanding emulators.

Right now I wonder if it would have been better to pay for something slightly more beefier than the 351V.

Even with the 640x480 vertical models they won't go away entirely. I began playing with disabling "crop overscan", and sometimes you get interesting results. Super Mario Bros 2 draws more of the game into the top and bottom overscan area instead of showing garbage graphics, but it probably is the exception since that one was meant to be a vertically scrolling game.

I've mostly been playing SNES, Genesis, Arcade, and some GB puzzle games, but I wanted a 3ds for some of the remakes they have of stuff like ocarina and some of their updated IPs. I think I'll just keep bidding on some 3ds-es on ebay. Yes. Also, the ags-001 is the best way to play gba. The 101 screen is oversaturated making the colours look garish, and in my experience the ghosting is pretty bad. Some people prefer the "vibrant" colours, but it's objectively not how the games are supposed to look.

Benchmarks show it a little better than the chips in the Odins, not as good as the D1200 in the GPD XP+. What's really neat though is it can run Steam if you're willing to jump through hoops, but I imagine setup for that would get a lot easier if it found its way to some chinkhelds though. Obviously not good enough for newer stuff but it's already been shown to play modern VNs and older 3D stuff just fine.

I'm mostly just play shmups and vns on Steam, so it could be perfect for me if compatibility isn't atrocious. I've been wanting a smaller and lighter handheld PC with d-pad on top for that task, but no one wants to fucking make one.

then eventually the will force you to procure a "pin" that is randomly generated by them to accept your packages

no pin = no item
abusing the return system is one thing

Someone at work got a near perfect New 3DS XL using one of those websites for locally buying second hand stuff, but even he agrees that he got pretty lucky. Right now it's a dedicated Fire Emblem machine.

> most of these games don't hold up today for me

Have you tried some of the 2d games that barely made it out of japan? Those have aged a lot better. Gunner's Heaven, Vanguard Bandits, harmful Park, etc. In my case, the small screen made those games more tolerable. Klonoa's sprites are extremely low res when played on a 40" screen, but perfect on a small one.

> but I wanted a 3ds for some of the remakes they have of stuff like ocarina and some of their updated IPs
Mask of Majora is absolutely insane on 3DS. The models look a lot better than in the ocarina remaster, but between the increased framerate and the free camera with right stick (the clitoris), it feels like a different game.

Honestly for the past year or so I've seen way more screen, battery, and power issues for 353 line than anything other chinkhelds. That's not to say I don't think the 353M is cool af though because I do, but I do still think the price is absurd for the chip and all the screen issues I've seen.

That's why the analog pocket is so good. 10x interger scaling for 4:3 and such a high resolution that non-interger 3:2 still looks great.

I'd love to see that screen on a more versatile handheld. it must be severely cost prohibitive or else someone would have done it

Seems like that's exactly what clamshellfags wanted, so why does everyone seem so unenthused by it?

can this thing emulate ps2 games?? how powerful is it?

>> No.9746617

Same exact chipset as the RP3+ so just check out some RP3+ PS2 videos on Youtube. If you want the quick rundown, it can run some of the easy to run PS2 games at okay speeds but it's going to struggle with the other 75% of the library.

I can't get First Funky Fighter to work on my rg353m.

Did I choose the wrong core? (mame2003plus)

I've been trying to find a better, smaller horizontal handheld with more features like the Miyoo Mini and have been recommended the RG353M for it's compactness but for the price and power, it's probably just better to spend 300 loonies on the RP3+, eh? If anyone has, is it pocketable?

>> No.9746750

>>9746734
It's just barely pocketable. It fits in my pocket but the edge very slightly sticks out. It might fit in yours if you're taller and have longer pants, I'm 5'9. But overall, I'd say the RP3 is the absolute limit of what is pocketable. Since the KT-R1 is 15mm shorter, I've been thinking of selling my 3+ and getting that instead since that would make it fit perfectly for me.

Are the screens of these handhelds enough to satisfy the thirst for retro Gaming? Specially for 5th games. I’ve been emulating for a long time using a tablet, and I wonder if it won’t feel like a downgrade.

I just don't see the gay. If someone thinks that first, they really expend a lot of time on the stuff. When I see that color all I can think, in this order:

- Color shifting toy cars:. The ones that change with water or temperature. This one was one of the most common paintjobs
- Eighties Robocop: He should look just, metallic, but because the suit it's always oiled to create the look, it goes from blue to purple with light.
- Very shitty vinils and ugly paint for cars.

I don't know, I probably play too much Forza. I see that colors and I think "retro laser 80s", or car tuning scene.
