When a game "doesn't hold up" 99% of the time the main problem are clunky controls.

goldeneye's main problem is the frame rate. it's better with a modern controller but it was designed for the weird N64 pad and it has auto-aim out the ass to compensate.

I wish Goldeneye held up but OP is completely right. It's the damn tank controls, just too jarring and awkward to actually be much fun anymore.

Don't care if trolling or not, but the big problem with a lot of games from that era is that they're purposely designed to not tell the player what to do so. The goal was to get you to subscribe to Nintendo Power for a guide, make you buy a guide book, or to fuck over people who were renting the game who didn't have an instruction manual. That's what OOT is designed around. You'll have to restart the game like 3 or 4 times because you missed an item if you're going in blind. There's also a lot of backtracking and a lot of trial and error.

>> No.9729845

I think the reason people are calling the controls bad is because modern sticks are nothing like the N64 stick, so when it comes to aiming they can't handle just how precise you need to be (something not offered by modern sticks). N64 also offered a shitload of control options, both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark even had double controller options that are closer to modern shooters, but I guess nobody remembers this stuff anymore (or they're fakers that never played the game in the past).

For the time, it was amazing. Yes, Everything before U6 is a bit primitive these days (although there's someone revamping U5 with retro-graphics that looks AMAZING).

What was amazing was, for it's time, the depth and the fact that you HAD to be morally good in the game. Remember, this is in an era where politicians were beginning to zero in on computer/console gaming and that we were all going to become axe-wielding atheist satanic communist baby killers if we played too much of them.

For the record, I have never used an axe to kill any atheist satanic communist babies. Ever. And I even LIKED Ultima 8.

Honestly? Yes. Xen is very brief, really the only shitty thing is the slow healing pools but you don't feel the sting of that slowness unless you fuck up and get wounded to the point where you need them. That and I don't like the twisty elevators but that's a personal problem.
I don't mind fighting the giant testicle spider either, you fight her enough times in Sven co-op it becomes routine.

Also despite Red Faction shitting the bed so quickly, I still think there's some cool shit there. The first portion of the game that lets you play with geo mod is really fun, and I like some of the weapons, the shock baton is a cool starting melee weapon, at least aesthetically.

>looks way better on a real n64 on a crt
A CRT may be a supernatural object delivered directly from the hand of god, but even god has his limits, n64 looks like a Vaseline smear, and not even the CRT can fix that.
