What are we playing brothers? I've been working away on Hyper Duel and it's been a really cool game so far. Really beautiful sprites and high speed action.

Get any new hardware? New games? New mods or working on any repairs?

I don't get why people like these so much. Holy Ark is pretty mediocre as far as dungeon crawlers go. Even Shining in the Darkness was more fun in spite of its bullshit. Have a Fenrir Duo in mine, but the installation wasn't as easy as I thought. Apparently some 21-pin models have the ribbon cable port on the motherboard facing the other direction than what the Duo expects, so I had to twist the cable around very carefully like in this picture for my Saturn.
Still it's worth the price, 100% compatibility (multidisc you just power off and boot up the next CD, all Saturn games will save your progress as a countermeasure and when it detects the disc it starts up from where you're supposed to) and even works with my PSK all-in-one cart.
What really sold it was when the Grandia translation update came out last week and I just replaced the old folders on the SD card, it's just so convenient compared to burning new discs. Don't know what I'm gonna do with all those burned CDs I will never, ever need again.

Alternating between Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Magic Knight Rayearth.
Alpha 3 is definitely my favorite SF and I've played it many times prior to playing the Saturn version, but it's always fun to pick up and play whenever.
As for Magic Knight Rayearth, it's been good so far. The dialogue is pretty alright for Working Designs standards (genuinely made me chuckle a few times) and the gameplay is neat, reminded me of 2D Zelda except your abilities are split amongst three people. It can be pretty annoying in certain areas where there are a lot of enemies, though. Also, I really like the diaries. What a fun way to recap the story, I wish more games did this.
Umi is best girl, by the way.

I'm looking around for places that will do an FRAM mod for me. I don't trust my own soldering skills to do it without fucking everything up. Once that's done I'm going to start Shining Force 3. I'm just paranoid about starting a long JRPG and having 100% of my progress saved on either volatile memory on the console or an almost 30 year old memory cart. Outside of that, lately I've just been playing through Megaman X4 again.

Same. Most Jap shit is priced well and in pretty good to great condition. Jap kids take care of their stuff apparently. In comparison, NA and PAL consoles and accessories are usually 1.5x - 2x the price, scratched the hell and back, and stuffed full of old boogers. Japanese Saturn stuff is always the way to go, especially since you're a retard if you aren't using a PSK cart or an ODE.

> Case in point

I just pulled these from Ebay, on the left we have an American Model 2 with a third party controller and three worthless games for $230 including shipping.

On the right, for less than half the cost, we have a Japanese Model 2 with two controllers for $104 (with free shipping from fucking Japan). Even after dropping $40 on a 4-in-1 that works as a PSK cart or whatever you're still $90 ahead. I think normies just don't know how easy it is to play pirated games on the Saturn these days.

Here is the lowdown on ODEs for anyone who is curious. There are three major options, the Fenrir, the MODE, and the Satiator (there are technically a couple more, but they're made by the GDEmu guy and his autism prevents him from being successful so they're basically impossible to find/outmoded anyway). All ODEs will reduce loadtimes, but the effect is very slight (the Saturn can only read data so quickly).

> Fenrir
The cheapest one (at around $140 plus shipping). Only supports MicroSD and seems to have more people bitching about problems and needing tech support than the other two, but it's a solid choice. You can install additional hardware that allows you to use both the CD-ROM drive and the Fenrir for both physical and digital versions of games, which sounds cool if you're not smart enough to realize that having an ODE means you don't need to use physical discs anymore. It doesn't support changing discs without rebooting, so multi disc games require you to save and reset before continuing, but that's not a massive deal since every multidisc game except maybe some random deeply obscure Japanese tentacle based visual novel supports saving before switching discs.

> MODE
More expensive than the Fenrir at around $235 shipped from whatever European tax haven country they're using now. Its big selling point is that it can be used on a Saturn, Dreamcast, or (with some extra hardware) a PS1, but that's kinda retarded because no one is going to be swapping ODEs around in their systems. Bills itself as a more "premium" product, and it has fewer issues with compatibility/fewer people having issues and reporting them online. One nice thing is that it supports MicroSD cards, USB sticks, and SATA hard drives (although some mechanical hard drives might need a lead run to the Saturn's PSU to give it enough juice to run, but that's not an issue because for the purposes of seek times and heat generation you should be using an SSD anyway). The menu supports game covers, which looks really nice, but when using covers scrolling is slow as shit so if you have more than 10 or 12 games on your system you're better off just using a normal list view. Makes SJW faggots on reddit REEEEE because apparently someone who works for the company said something mean to them on twitter one time(?), so its honestly worth supporting the company for that reason alone.

> Satiator
The most expensive (around $275 shipped), its main selling point is that it doesn't require an installation, but instead is used in the Saturn's expansion slot (not the cart slot at the top, the slot at the back next to the battery), similar to a VCD card. This obviously means that you cannot run a VCD card and a Satiator at the same time, but I think there is only a single game that actually requires it, but it just has higher quality cutscenes and has a version available that does not require it. Has a barebones menu, but who gives a shit, it's just a menu. Works perfectly fine, and does not require you to open your console, so if you're too fucking stupid to know how to turn a screwdriver than this is the ODE for you.

True. Honestly it seems like the Saturn's CD-ROM drive is fairly high quality compared to some other consoles from the era. The PS1's had gears wearing out and people turning their consoles upside down, and the PS2 had the DRE fiasco, but pretty much every Saturn I've come across has still been trucking after almost 30 years. It never hurts to be prepared though.

ODEs are very easy to install, all you need is a screwdriver and maybe half an hour of time start to finish. Both Fenrir and MODE have pretty straightforward instruction manuals available online, and there are probably a million "how to" videos on youtube.

One thing I forgot to mention about the MODE though, you have to actually register the ODE to get firmware updates. It's not a huge problem since they're very infrequent and new ones ship with the latest firmware, but it's still something to know. Basically the creators are paranoid about their shit getting cloned, and if that happens don't want to have to waste time and resources helping people troubleshoot problems with their wish.com knockoffs, so I understand the reasoning. It's still kinda dumb though.

>>9726136
No, it's easiest to just put the correct region disc image on your storage, but if for some reason you want a different region they can autopatch when booting.

The only exception to this is Die Hard Arcade, which reads the region from your BIOS instead. If you're playing the game on a Japanese console, regardless of what region the disc image is, it will still display the QTEs in Japanese. There is a patched version floating around that fixes this though.

>>9726137
Based. The Saturn is a really great system with a lot of fun games. It doesn't have the massive number of titles that the PS1 has, but it has some stuff that is pretty unique. If you're into arcade ports, fighting games, shoot 'em ups, or obscure Japanese flavored deep cuts than you should be in for a good time. It's also interesting to see versions of well known games that also hit other platforms that have differences or unique additions (stuff like SotN, Grandia, Duke Nukem 3D, etc). Make sure and check out the list of fan translated games, the majority of the console's games only released in Japan, but over the past few years we've been slowly getting new English versions of them released, which has been pretty great.

Honestly SFTGOTMOTG isn't as terrible as everyone makes it out to be. It mostly suffered due to the digitized graphics looking really weird and Street Fighter Alpha already being on store shelves for over 2 months when it released in the US.

Capcom actually did the Saturn port themselves, its basically Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo with movie characters.

Speaking of the movie,

> The entire time they were filming in Thailand there was a threat of a military coup so the actors had to be shuttled around via speedboats in canals in the middle of the night by security forces.

> Based Jean Claud Van Damme spent the majority of his time during filming getting coked out of his skull (he estimates he was snorting around $10k worth per week, and this was in 1994 dollars) as well as railing the shit out of Kylie Minogue. He also frequently didn't show up on set or showed up extremely late.

> The explosives they rigged to blow up Bison's temple base were way more powerful than anticipated, and came very close to injuring a bunch of the main actors.

> Raul Julia, suffering from stomach cancer and dangerously underweight as a result, got busted for sneaking out at night so he could gamble in casinos.

> Even though the guy who played Sawada didn't speak English, Capcom initially insisted that he play Ryu, but relented after the director pushed back.

> Even though it got absolutely savaged by critics, it made 165 million dollars off of a 35 million dollar budget (again, in 1994 dollars).

The fact that the movie was made, how it got made, and how much money it made is absolutely insane. Here's Ming Na Wen's cameltoe.

Sorry if this is poorly written, I just woke up after a ketamine binge

The Sega Saturn is my favorite console of all time:
1. Best versions of 2D fighting games, which are my bread and butter
2. Best versions of Neo Geo games without the ridiculous pricing, cheaper even than the Neo Geo CD
3. Amazing direct arcade ports that make their console equivalent redundant
4. Best looking big box games in the PAL region, but also beautiful Japanese jewel boxes in amazing condition due to Japanese sellers being incredibly open and honest about condition
5. As a Sega fan, the Saturn feels like the perfect amalgamation between Sega's heyday and downfall, Sega was firing on all cylinders for me
6. Most aesthetically pleasing console of all time, screams 90s with its square box look that reminds me of the Volkswagen Golf my mother used to drive me to school in

I do have a PSK cartridge and a CD burner, I just like having the 'real' version of games too. I like talking about games when people come over to my house and it's nicer when I have something to show that isn't a Memorex CD-R with sharpie on it. People who are too stupid to be able to install an ODE always fallback on this argument. It doesn't make you look smart or cool, it makes you look terminally ASSBLASTED because people can get the exact same experience you wasted hundreds of dollars for for the cost of a single CDR.

(for the record I used a 4-in-1 with pseudosaturn firmware for about a month and then decided to order an ODE)

>>9740540
Yeah, it's been a thing for a while. For like $40 or $50 plus a few minutes burning a CDR you can get the exact same experience as retards who spend $1,000 on PDS or whatever.

People are better off with an ODE than a Pseudosaturn Cart. I played this game on a Japanese Sega Saturn, huge problem occurred when my Saturn was reading the disk, it made this loud clicky noise. Which doesn't happen with the official Sega Saturn discs. When I played it on CD-R, the screen would flicker or go static. The screen also went red when I tried to use cheats. So I'd only recommend an ODE or a Satiator. Also you sound like a poorfag getting salty over people buying official discs. It's their money, they can spend it however they want.

Honestly I think Nintendo could have released a pile of dog turds in a box back in the mid 90s and it would have sold like crazy in the US as long as it had a Mario game when it launched.

The thing that makes me chuckle the most about the N64 and its lack of games is that if you ask 10 Snoys what the 10 best games on the PS1 are you'll get 10 completely different lists. If you ask 10 Segafags what the top 10 games are on the Saturn you'll get a fairly varied set of lists with 4-5 common games (most likely stuff like VF2, Sega Rally, and Daytona). If you ask 10 Nintoddlers what the ten best games on the N64 are you're going to get a list comprising entirely of

> Mario 64
> Ocarina of Time
> Majora's Mask
> GoldenEye
> Perfect Dark
> Smash Bros
> Starfox
> Banjo Kazooie
> Mario Kart
> F-Zero

every single time, without fail.

Sorry to hear that you're broke, living on minimum wage. The reality is nobody is stupid for spending money on whatever game they want. You're just broke.

On YouTube, it's a top shelf Zelda experience must play game for Saturn owners. There's a lot of horseshit on there and it's a mixed bag on what actually holds up

I Don't blame you anon, I didn't realize how much of a snowball it would be to absolutely pimp out my Saturn, I recommend everyone who's slightly interested in the Saturn to just emulate. Also retro bits are very good, but 8bitdo sells boards for the OEM Saturn controllers that make them Bluetooth. I can say with confidence that oems are probably one of the best feeling controllers ever put into production.

How necessary is the racing wheel for Daytona USA? It looks pretty janky, but AFAIK it's the only way to play the game with analog control.

The wheel is good but I prefer playing it with the normal non analog controller. It just works.

Cool. I grew up playing the original Ridge Racer on PS1, so I'm used to playing these kinds of racing games with a d-pad, I'm just not sure if Daytona is optimized for one or the other.

I played through Astal recently, and I agree with the other anons. It's okay. It's worth your time, and worth a blank CD, but I wouldn't pay too much for a real copy.

This is one of my favorites. You don't need to know anything about the series to enjoy it. If you like 2D Zelda games you'll probably like it.

When ahead and bought an NTSC Japanese Saturn. My PAL Saturn RGB SCART cable won't work on it right? I'll need something like this

From what I've read it's missing frames and a lot of the combos are totally different. It's probably wiser to treat it as a different revision from the arcade version, though it's still beefy for a Saturn game. Vampire Savior is another game considered arcade perfect even though it has resolution and frame differences as well as different characters available. Doesn't stop me from loving it though.

> Vampire Savior is another game considered arcade perfect even though it has resolution and frame differences as well as different characters available.
All CPS1 and CPS2 ports have resolution differences because those boards run at an odd resolution of 384x224. The closest you can get to on Saturn is 352x224 which is what all those ports run at. They kept the assets untouched though and the games still play as though they are at 384x224. All that happens is more of your character goes off screen when you back as far away as possible.

As for frame differences I've never seen any evidence of Vampire Savior having differences in frames. As far as I'm aware they're all there. And the only character difference is they added 3 characters to the game that weren't there in the original. I wouldn't really consider that a hit against it, it's no different than future ports and versions of Alpha 3 adding more characters.

I think you're right in that I goofed some information. I tried to find the reference to the info about the frames and move changes and this is what I found. Nothing specific at all. The most I can recall is something with Talbain's kick working differently. The PSX version has cut frames except for mirror matches. The Dreamcast version is a neat idea that messes with life and damage values. The PSP game is that but with a single player mode. The PS2 collection has a weird bonus character.
Also a big fan of Fighters Megamix. It's got a mess of franchise crossover and my wife somehow always stomps my shit at it. 10/10 would recommend.

It would be nice if they had a break down of what was wrong with the different versions.

Most of the time though it seems the tournament scene throws a fit about certain glitches or unbalanced gameplay in the Arcade version being fixed in the home console releases.
