Why does the 1990s Amiga aesthetic look so soulful?

That's not the "amiga aesthetic", that's Flink.
Pic related is how most Amiga games look like

That or pic related. To be fair, one of the best speccy to 'miger ports ever made.

Brits and Japs both had extremely talented digital artists, and the 90s is (IMHO) when visual art design in games peaked. America on the other hand was very code-centric and it showed. Then the world went 3D and everything became polyjank for 10-15 years. We're only now beginning to truly recover from that dark age.

European developers (especially Germans and Russians) made the most autistic and complex games though. Japanese games were actually the most style over substance overall.

Fuck the gay rainbow backgrounds.

Why the Amiga devs were so OBSESSED with toys? It seems that almost every single Amiga mascot platformer has a toy level, while others are completely based around toys.

It's like American devs in the 90's with their "Hollywoodland" platformers or bad fighting games reuniting "the deadliest warriors across the time".

Why is the lightest color in this game basically a dull light gray? Just by punching up the palette a little it would have looked way better.

it's because Amiga games were played on bright af CRT screens that punched the palette up on their own. it's the reverse of the thing with early GBA games where they're all very brightly colored because devs had to work around a screen with no backlighting

That's just british developers. They were only second place to the japanese when it came to making games in the 80s. Too bad they didn't have the same touch when balancing the gameplay.

Not on Amiga platformers. Toy levels are cool in 3D games where you can explore the place.

high contrast, very rich colors were allowed to flourish. eye strain be damned. though it wasn't at all an amiga exclusive thing. contrary to the thread 3d didn't kill it with the likes of dkc3, mario 64 and many others

ST2 was a pretty bad attempt at consolizing the Amiga experience, you can tell they wanted to make a Contra killer but they just didn't have the chops. Anyway, Lionheart nailed the aesthetic. Best looking Amiga game along with Agony and Shadow of the Beast.
