In pic 1920x1440p90hz GTF 362mhz. I can't test it any higher because my GPU locks if I try anything above 1536p60 (this is why you don't buy nvidia for Linux use). Didn't bother trying anything else, so I have no idea just how high bandwidth it actually can do. But my unit does at least 360mhz. Regardless, it completely outperforms the Delock 62967 and other popular adapters while costing one tenth. But I have no idea if mine's just a silicon lottery jackpot. Please test it.

It does not crush blacks or whites either, though I did not bother checking in-depth with my colorimeter. EDID on it is trash though, it reports dogshit resolutions. I don't think it passes any of the serial comms through, so no DDC/CI likely either. You'll have to force custom resolutions and depending on your drivers override any checks.
For X11+Nvidia, in the device field of xorg.conf(.d/) you can add
Option "ModeValidation" "NoMaxPClkCheck, AllowDpInterlaced, NoHorizSyncCheck, NoVertRefreshCheck, NoDisplayPortBandwidthCheck, AllowNonEdidModes, NoExtendedGpuCapabilitiesCheck, NoTotalSizeCheck"
X11+AMD in my experience doesn't have these checks and on Windows CRU overrides for both.

I like it for 6th gen if for no other reason just to not deal with deinterlacing. Xbox and Dreamcast have fairly wide 480p support though. That said the one case of playing an Xbox game with progressive scan available on Xbox 360 I've tried with both 480i component on CRT and on a 1080p LCD monitor over VGA still looked better on the TV, Generally native 480p on a VGA CRT monitor is going to look better than upscaling on an LCD but only Dreamcast and Xbox 360 natively support that on consoles.

480p on PS2 and Gamecube is kind of a weird set of tradeoffs anyways. With 480i you either choose between being a little flickery or a little blurrier because of anti-flicker filter (Smash Melee has this as a menu option) so with 480p you can get the best of both in that regard, but it comes with reduced color depth which creates dithering and/or banding.

It's the same for me with most electronic devices. The 60s and 70s designs are awful for me, especially the wood. I consider the 80s to early 90s the peak of electronics design, together with car design.
Everything went downhill from there, with weird curves in the 90s and piano black in the 00s-10s. Fortunately nature seems to be healing lately with the return of 80s-like designs, pic related. TVs barely even have bezels now, and that's a good thing, considering how awful the earlier LCDs looked.
Modern cars got a bit futuristic looking instead, I like it with the exception of instrument clusters being just big screens, not even OLEDs in most cases, with shitty fonts reminiscent of some 2010-tier Android devices. Can't beat analog indicators, pic related again (I wish they were bigger though).

That's how I had it set up with a 4250 (I think), and if I'm not mistaken, the way you've current got it set up has it outputting 720x576 downscaled by the GPU to 480i which results in a much blurrier image than actually outputing a native 480i signal; Even 640x480 looked off compared to a native signal, though I never tried it with the 30hz refresh rate-- That might be actually outputting 480i.

Ultimately, I found another TV with component input and used crtemudriver to output whatever signal with composite sync to VGA -> SCART going into a transcoder to take it to component. It definitely took a lot more effort, but I can output at any resolution I want without any issues.

(Ignore the lack of blue in the image, the VGA -> SCART cable I soldered together had a bad blue solder joint)

>> No.9716758

>>9716734
i think 640x480 does output proper 480i, the text is quite sharp i prefer the slightly higher resolution though because a lot of programs are unusable at 480 and much better with 720*576. Also the 30hz is the max refesh rate it lets me set for some reason it says it supports up to 60hz but i cant set that.

>VGA -> SCART going into a transcoder to take it to component.

This 100%.

It only makes sense to buy a CRT if you are actually capable of repairing it yourself. Even the best CRTs are old now. Something will eventually go wrong.

It doesn't make economic sense for people with limited budgets to hire people to repair CRT TVs .

CRT collecting and usage are for retro gamers and people who want vintage equipment.

My advice for people would be to buy a decent CRT and enjoy it while it lasts. It may be 6 months it may be 20 years.

All things considered they are not *that* rare or *that* expensive. Even the expensive CRTs are very cheap compared to other hobbies.

For anyone that wants to learn about CRTs, there are some older books out there that are helpful and worth tracking down. CRT, radio, cassette, and stereo repair shops used to be as common as small engine repair (something else that has gone away). Plenty of midwits got trained to be technicians and fixed 100s of tvs and monitors. You'll need to under stand some basic electronics. Any beginner analog circuits book that covers transformers and transistors is a good start.
Here's some resources that I like:
easy top level guide that's all over the place but covers a lot of terminology:
https://www.repairfaq.org/samnew/tvfaq.htm
I have been reading this and it's surprising tv/crt heavy:
https://www.amazon.com/Troubleshooting-Repairing-Consumer-Electronics-Schematic/dp/0071421815
Here is a tube radio obsessed boomer that worked as a tv tech. It's not gay gamer shit that teaches you nothing like other channels. This guy fixes CRT tvs from the 1940s on up. he's worth watching to see how he uses equipment, tests components, inspects things for damage/fuckery and explains the evolution of the technology:
https://www.youtube.com/@shango066

that's just the beginning. I have found plenty of older tv repair books that have been helpful in learning and internalizing the functions of CRT technology. There is not a lot of computer monitor literature. It's very similar but horizontal deflection circuits are designed differently. Also by by the time CRT monitor technology was pulling way ahead of tvs, flat panels came along.

A CRT getting a bit wet on the bottom should be fine, right? I've heard stories of these things sitting out in the rain and still being fine.

Well, they tend to have the main board on the bottom. At the very least I'd make sure to let it sit and dry out before daring to turn it on. You might want to take out the screws and take off the back and help dry it out. There's a potential for water damage if it was sitting for a while soaking wet but probably not an issue. You could always check for rust inside.

It's not because of NTSC per se, it's just model 1 genesis having really dogshit encoding that also causes these thick vertical stripes to be on the screen at all times. It's not an intentional "rainbow waterfall" effect or any cope like that. It's present at all times on model 1 genesis via composite, it's just easiest to see during false transparency effects (such as sonic 1 waterfall or sonic 2 chemical plant tubes). But even on a solid blue background they're incredibly apparent.

For what it matters, the video encoder and other internals still vary from model 1 to model 1 and model 2 to model 2 so some are shit and some are...less shit in both. I really need to get around to testing what the fuck the meme waterfall looks like on a Wii.
>composite no trap filter basically looks like you'd expect without rainbows
>composite with trap filter still looks fully transparent just with sharper contrast between white and blue
>component looks like solid lines as you'd expect
Component with Genesis Plus GX's NTSC filter looks a lot like the second but with component color and slightly jankier. Annoying the SNES9X family on Wii don't have the trap filter option.

>>9723409
It's caused by NTSC but the hardware is responsible for how well it's mitigated or exaggerated. Like on PS3 and some stuff on Wii you can trade more rainbow artifacts for less blur but the Genesis somehow sucks shit at both.

So the only CRT I still have in my set-up is my PC CRT. But I kind of want to fuck around with playing some flash carts on my SNES. Will this AV2VGA Mini do the job of upscaling the image to display on my PC CRT?

Recapping is not difficult. Just tedious.
Make a discharging tool using a length of old extension cord and a flathead screwdriver.
Take your PVM apart and take pictures and write notes along the way so you know how to put it back together. Keep track of all the screws and small parts by taping them to a piece of paper and labeling them.
Learn what the few dangerous parts are and don't touch them.
Once you have all the PCBs out, recapping is the easy but time-consuming part.

To the Anon who was wondering if the Wii rescales 240p content to 620x240 no matter the resolution, I can confirm that it does seem to do that, at least in Mednafen. Scrolling in Salamander produced a lot of warping/shimmering. Not sure if RetroArch can get around this or not (maybe by playing at 512x224), but I somehow doubt it.

Ran Salamander for PC Engine and looked at the horizontal scrolling and noticed the warp/shimmer that you usually get from improper scaling. I don't know about the SNES but there's Gleylancer for the MD.

>> No.9724832

>>9724663
Yeah I later found some confirmation it does but apparently the Wii's hardware scaling is pretty good for a consumer TV at least because I can look at the vertical bars in 240p test suit on 256x240 and it's really hard to tell they're not perfectly even without being obviously blurred. Like if I look at it way out I guess I can see the pattern of slightly wider white lines every few but then I look closer to make sure it's not in my head and can't see it anymore so in any other scenario it's effectively invisible, at least without perfect geometry. There's an edge case I'd otherwise like to test with Tekken 1 having a temple background with 1 pixel alternating rooftops in 512x480 but I'm not emulating 32 bit consoles on a Wii anyways so it doesn't really matter.

Maybe Mednafen is going straight from 256 to 640 instead of doubling it first like the more developed Wii emulators, or doing it internally? That could be why I was getting blatantly uneven pixels in Retroarch due to one of the billion settings too I guess. I wonder if the Gamecube had a significant amount of 512x480 games like PS2 and that's why it's really good at that? I'd have to see if 384x240 games have more problems but I don't feel like the Wii is a great way to emulate CPS-2 or personally have a lot of interest in CPS-1 regardless.

Unless you have an extremely good reason to get into the service menu you should just stay out of it.
And IF you do then write down every single setting first thing you do when you go in and then look up what ever single code does before you change a single thing. If you can't find a definition online for what a code does then do not change it. Be very aware of what buttons you are pressing at all time and be very deliberate with your navigation of the menu.

Get in, change exactly what you need to and only what need to, and get out. And then don't touch it again. Usually the only good reason to enter a service menu is to reduce the overscan on a consumer CRT.

I added dot pitch to the table for the ones I could find one.
I suppose that if I want to play a lot of 2D games that make use of dithering I'll need a higher dot pitch?
Interestingly enough the multiscan 420GS is listed as having 0.25-.27mm variable dot pitch aperture grille and 0.28 seems to be the highest I have.
I suppose I'll have to try the trinitron and one of the .28 ones and see which I like best.

I was actually pretty disappointed about the trunk because it's not an absolutely giant trunk but it's generally a pretty decent sized opening. I don't remember because somehow I wasn't carrying it but maybe it would have worked trying a different way, but I was also only driving like 6 blocks so just throwing it in the front was fine. This TV is relatively filled in around the back in a way the LxWxH doesn't quite make clear instead of being tighter around the tube so that has some significant unexpected implications on where it actually fits.

Start with something cheap/free and then upgrade from there. I wouldn't recommend starting with a PVM because they often times need servicing and calibration. When time comes to get a PVM, start locally because there's a 50/50 chance it'll get destroyed during shipping - most distribution centers use conveyor systems with ~5 foot drops.

I no longer care about RGB.
Just want an old floor model television from the late 80s or early 90s and a flash cart or two.
This is my dream set-up.

My crt just died and a friend will give me one he has lying around, however he said that the bottom of the scream isn't working and is just black (pic rel, he sent me)
I still haven't gotten my hands on it but what could it be?
Is there a way to shrink the image to only use the center with black bars around? That'd be fine since it's a pretty big screen.

What kind of CRT? SD, HD or PC Monitors? Since you didnt specify I'll list advantages common to them all.
-Better scalability and larger sizes with widescreen format
-No convergence/purity issues
-No geometry issues
-Perfect corner to corner focus
-Pixel structure helps resolving higher resolutions much better than a CRT would
-Same optical properties as CRTs phosphors, so you get perfect viewing angles and contrasting colors, as opposed to ugly filtered LCD colors that only look straight on

I still think PC CRTs are the absolute best when it comes to performance, MPRT is always low and blur-free at any refresh rate. SD CRTs are the best in handling 480i legacy content. HD CRTs are.... idk, they dont make much sense compared to a Plasma. Maybe the slight gain in motion clarity, but then the other issues dont really make it worth.

I have all 4 main display technologies (OLED/CRT/LCD/Plasma) and only the Plasma is closer to the CRT. OLED is just a buffed LCD without the flaws, but with the same motion issues and filtered light (OLED is self-emissive but is still filtered).
I think CRT fans will like Plasma displays.

>>9742612
I have my parents' old 60" Panasonic Plasma now and honestly, for 7th gen+ content, it's pretty great. Overall, I prefer Plasma to HD-CRT, it's just objectively better for the kind of content that is best suited for both technologies. And Plasmas look beautiful, I could not have summarized the advantages better if I had tried. I guess the one drawback of Plasma is the power consumption, but I'm neither poor nor a commie so I don't give a shit about that. I still don't know how consumers got duped into accepting an objectively inferior display technology... maybe LCD panels are cheaper to make, and we got propagandized into thinking they're better so that the manufacturers save money?

>>9742742

If you don't own any CRTs to begin with, don't buy a PVM. If you've already decided you want to see how a monitor compares to consumer tubes, then try to spend no more than $350. I've never personally spent even that much on any of the monitors I've gotten, but I think that's what would be considered "reasonable" in today's market. Of course, this means "not ebay" market. Check FBM and cold call local news stations/video production studios/etc. Never ship tubes from sellers you don't know well, and never ship tubes larger than 14" from anyone.

I have a couple of panasonic consumer sets. A couple of pvms popped up locally for sale and was just curious on the value because they very rarely appear here. There's also a 2043md going for ~430 usd which feels a bit more reasonable, but still a lot for an older model. I recall a similar model that went for ~300usd last year.

>> No.9744590

>>9744556
That 2043MD could be promising if you haggle. Just remember that lots of pro monitors saw thousands upon thousands of hours of use. Always try to get the history of a pro monitor. MD tubes from actual hospital environments may have been used rather sparingly, especially in comparison to PVMs in video production. Knowing the history either gives you leverage for trying to cut a deal, or shows that if the tube is fresh, it might be worth a premium (still, never pay asking price without making an offer). Just keep in mind that if you're getting a pro monitor for RGB/component, and you haven't been using RGB/component with your systems already, you're going to sink a lot more money into the necessary cables/transcoders/etc. And if you're intent on just sticking with composite, pro monitor comb filters suck ass compared to a good consumer tube. If you use s-video then you're fine (and based).

I've owned monitors and bought all of the cables, but now I've gone back to using a consumer Panasonic (1992 Superflat), so I do regret owning a pile of unused cables a decent bit.
