Whats your favorite retro collectathons and why?

I'm just going to chill this weekend, listen to some music, and collect some fucking stars, or bananas, ...or "jiggies" I guess.

Banjo is the only good one in my book because it actually makes collecting things exciting and punishing and doesn't pretend to be much more than a collectathon. Somehow dying and losing all your progress is brutal but keeps the game entertaining throughout

Mario is a good platformer and not necessarily a collectathon

The Spyro trilogy. Something about the the first game in particular makes it endlessly replayable for me, it's the only vidya I've ever been able to beat multiple times back-to-back without getting bored of it, like it triggers some sort of autistic idiot savant state.

I think it has to do with its ratio of content vs. length; it lasts a few hours, there's a generous amount of levels, but none of them are too huge, and Spyro moves quickly enough that you can beat many before their music track even loops, so there's a constant influx of new environments, a fresh one every few minutes, all of which feel distinct thanks to the artists' devotion to color theory and Copeland's efforts on the OST. The sequels are great, too, but I feel like they drag on a little too long, 3 especially with some of its missions and the other playable characters.

>>9711118
Conker isn’t a collectathon. The only collectible is cash and it’s nearly impossible to miss any of them. Furthermore, the money is only used once in the game to bribe the guard to get into Uga Buga.
That’s it. That is literally all the collecting you do in the game.
You fags really need to stop bringing it up in “collectathon” threads because it 100 percent is not one.

>> No.9717701

I wonder what a meta game would be like where the collectathon is you playing as a modern day collector, not the normal ones who just get some stuff they like but the ones where they have to own everything. A collecting game where you play as a gamer collecting games.

it has a bit of the switching from Dk64, complete with dead end gates needing a character so you turn around and open the way then go back to get the character you were just using. you also cant complete a level in one go and have to come back. But its still banjo and imo better than dk64.

yeah, did it last night, took me a little while to figure out those tiny circular windows were breakable since they were just textured into the larger wall, and most breakable things in the game have at least a little bit of relief

Those portholes actually do stand out from the ones that are just decoration, if you look. The main danger the world presents is catching you off guard, killing you, and resetting the notes. The oily water is vicious. If you get the notes and Jiggy in the engine room first thing, though, you're a lot less likely to wind up dead. It's pretty much a retread of Clanker's Cavern and turning the key at the bottom of the well in that regard.

The boss battle is a great challenge. I'll confess I've never beaten it myself without cheats.

I get it. The first quiz was a cool surprise and I wanted to like it. I wish it was optional, though. Most all of minigame filter points in games could be solved by offering an alternative of a hard section with normal gameplay. Like how forced stealth in games is terrible but stealth where you could possibly fight your out if you're good is fine. Maybe if instead of taking damage on the quiz you'd be dropped into a gauntlet on a wrong answer, so if you're good at the game but not trivia you could brute force refuse to play along with her game.

You're right. Can't think of any other games that do that, off the top of my head. Most that try quantify it too much. Like the orcs in the Mordor games aren't unique characters, they're just amalgamations of modifiers that you look over and choose the best way to kill them. What's more real? A tall fat amormed spear orc that gets angry at bees but vulnerable to stealth assassinations VS. monkey?

>> No.9727765

That's one of the best things too, first starts with the idea with names & atittudes, but the second and third does a great job of expanding it. Ape Escape is a world I'd love to return to some day but I still have some of the older games to play.

yeah, I always started with the engine room since dying was less punishing, took me a couple of deaths losing quite some progress to figure it out, also left the turbine piece after getting the 100, since its an instakill if you fuck it up
anyway I beat the game!
after the ending scene, I checked the egg/key spots and they weren't open, so i just looked it up online and I'm glad I did since that's how you get them, its such an oddity, shame their functionality was scrapped

overall this is my first "collectathon" (no, mario 64 isn't one), at first it felt like a chore since the task feels so monumental but it grows on you as you get closer to getting everything, just like a puzzle or an album I guess
dying can be very brutal in this game but thats sorta the point, makes you very keen on keeping yourself healthy
