Is it true that all you really need to know is some basic Hiragana to play PC-engine games? If so, I might start to pick it up for some classic kino.

>> No.9705635

>>9705507
Ultimately, I would advise against it. Japanese without kanji isn't really a thing. If a game is hiragana-only it is either a) because of technical limitations at the time of its creation or b) aimed at very young children who already know some kanji but not many. The language has a great many, many, many words that sound alike. They look distinct on paper when written in chinese kanji characters but are spelled the exact same when you only look at their readings noted down in hiragana. This makes reading hiragana-only stuff, let's say, less fun.

Also, you wouldn't really be learning the language either or rather, you'd be going about it in an incredibly ineffective way that by design can never carry you to the realm of literacy. Sure, you might end up being able to understand some of it... poorly probably - because no studying materials are going to adhere to this notion that kanji are off limits. So your understanding of grammar too would most likely remain rudimentary at best.

In short, don't lie to yourself: Fear of studying kanji is misplaced. This is what Japanese is. One must accept it or move along. There is no having-it-the-easy-way or cheating. It is a difficult language to learn and a fucking time vampire. Either do it right or don't start at all. Life is too short to waste it on illusions. Hell, there are regularly people on this site who grind out kanji (often with very peculiar methods of studying too) only to find out they can't understand basic sentences a year in. Self study of Japanese is very hard and waylaid with ignes fatui that can cost you dearly.

However, the decision is yours and nothing is impossible. If the sole goal is to merely be able to navigate some menus and recognize はじめから or つづく reliably, then that is very achievable. But it most likely won't carry you smoothly through game's story you wish to play.

My experience has been different from this, even for games that were already released in English officially On the contrary to your experience, I've found that playing Japanese games in their original language gives you new insights that you wouldn't understand otherwise. It turns out even translated games still can only deliver an effective interpretation of a game rather than the original game itself. But I don't blame anyone for not wanting to learn Japanese, it's far from easy.

>>9706689
I find it's more fun if you treat the language learning as a hobby in itself. Originally I was just doing it to play games, but now I'm starting to get into books, tv, browsing websites (various things are only well written about online in Japanese), etc. I would say to find a starting resource that you like, and if you find you enjoy it or get something out of it after a few months then keep going. If you aren't enjoying it in a few months then you can stop and know you didn't just spend your days wondering.

>various things are only well written about online in Japanese
I've heard this statement before but do you have any examples and maybe some links? I do know Japanese but I personally don't spend much time reading stuff online besides BBS posts and web novels.

you played a couple of games from one series that I've never even heard of, that says nothing about the literal THOUSANDS of untranslated games.

>> No.9709470

With as much prestige and reverence people have for titles like Tengai Makyou, Linda Cube, SMT Devil Summoner, Summon Niight, etc, you'd think this stuff would already be translated by now.

>most japs consider Tengai Makyou II to be one of the best RPGs ever made
No joke! People still talk about it. There's a song that was popular in Japan a few years ago and it name-drops a few retro games in the intro and that's one of them. They mention a few consoles but I like how PC Engine is their favorite.

Here's the lyrics with a rough translation:
>じーちゃん マウンテン芝をカット
Grandpa cuts the mountain grass
>ばーちゃん リバーでウォッシュ はっ!
Grandma washes (clothes) in the river, Ha!
>僕おうちに篭もってゲーム
I stay at home and play games
>PCエンジン by ハドソン
PC Engine by Hudson
>毎日遊べる夏休み イージーモードのエブリディ
I play every day during summer vacation, my every day is "easy mode"
>高橋名人 バンゲリングベイ 天外魔境II
Takahashi Meijin, Bungeling Bay, Tengai Makyou 2
>ファミコン一日一時間 でもPCエンジン3時間
I play Famicom for one hour every day, but I play PC Engine for 3 hours
>メガドライブ ネオジオ ゲームボーイアドバンス 勉強・宿題そっちのけ
Mega Drive, Neo Geo, Game Boy Advance, I ignore studying/homework

The song is called Momotaro, it's by Wednesday Campanella.

Isn't Tengai Makyou 2 impossible to understand for a foreigner? Even if you know Japanese you're not going to get the historical references and cultural jokes.

>> No.9711950

>>9711843
Understanding that there is a joke is enough. Japanese is plenty different than most Latin languages but it's not special and indecipherable.

Why wouldn't you? If you're a foreigner you can still learn the culture, that's called assimilation. As for historical references... Did you just stop learning about history after you finished high school?

I love it too.
Fuun Kabukiden (direct sequel to Manjimaru/TM2) is based on England... and Manjimaru is cool as well. They have parodies of Mickey Mouse, Mario and Adol Christin (Ys) and even mock Mother 2. No way you'll get bored with these (but you should probably play the original uncensored versions)

The only disappointment is Ziria and maybe TM3 (which has nothing to do with the original cooler TM3). Zero is translated but very watered down. Oriental Blue is fine but while a very innovative RPG it lacks that zany worldbuilding touch.

If you're interested in the unique gameplay flow the series has, you'll want to play Linda Cube, the Oreshika series, Gunparade March if you liked TM2. Same dev team. They also made a Vita game that was only ever translated on PC, and the upcoming Loop8.
