What handhelds are we playing on today /vr/bros? What games? Thinking of consooming another handheld you don't need soon?

I'm playing Code Veronica and Arrow Flash on my RP3+, Armed Police Batrider and Gunbird on my POWkiddy A12.

T618 devices like the RP3+, RG505, Powkiddy X18s, and X28 (pic related was just uploaded by based Powkiddy 2 days ago so I guess it's still happening after all. kino new slogan at the end of the webm btw) are the weakest devices that can play all Dreamcast games at fullspeed without frameskip. The Steam Deck is the cheapest device I know of that can run all PS2 games perfectly. I think the Aya Neo Air Plus Intel or Mendocino launching tomorrow will probably end up taking that mantle but I'm not 100% on that.

That's the cheapest you're getting full PS2 emulation coverage until varporware Lokis come out considering Aya just completely shit the bed with Air Plus pricing. And even then, I'm not 100% certain on the chips in the cheaper Lokis handling it. At the very least, the bottom Mendocino in the Mini (7220u) and the 3050e in the Zero don't quite cut it. Hoping the Mendocino in the Mino Pro (7320u) will.

I had an Odin and aside from the (imo) horrific handcramping ergonomics and unusuable d-pad due to the super low placement, it was fantastic. Ran every PS2 game I personally threw at it (albeit not at the high resolutions and with the 60fps/de-interlace/widescreen mods I could use on Deck), but apparently there are indeed some PS2 games it just can't run at fullspeed regardless of what you do.

Steam Deck + New 3DS (the small one) is the best combo.

I just got mine a week ago and it really amazes me how many games just play better on a handheld, been diving into my backlog. I much prefer games like Hylics or various other indies I've acquired over the years feel on the device.

First true handheld competitor since the Vita desu. Homebrew scene is thriving, developers are optimizing more and more games. Dolphin devs are targeting getting every game full speed on the specs. Honestly, I've never been much of a PC gamer, prefering to us my PC for productivity vs entertainment, and the Steam Deck? It's an absolute gamechanger for PC gaming as a whole.

I want a smaller, less powerful steam deck, I think alot of the people who want a larger, more expensive, new model are in their PC gaming echo chambers not realizing PC gaming is a super niche hobby compared to console gaming, and the Steam Deck is bridging that gap.

Personally wasn't considering a deck considering the i3 1215u can play xbox one titles OK at 720p low-medium. The i3 is faster than the i5 1135g7 that gpd was selling with their win 3 a few years back. Due to the better cpu and xe graphics.

Valve is more the exception than the rule. They can sort of take the hit because they make more than enough money on Steam to offset any losses.
Plus if SteamOS gets an official public release and is compatible with tons of PCs and x86 handhelds, then they pretty much get their name out there and take some of Windows' marketshare.

>Steam Deck + New 3DS (the small one) is the best combo.
Personally I don't think there's many DS/3DS games worth playing that don't work fine on 1 screen with a screen swap hotkey for when touch is needed. Beyond that the Deck does everything the 3DS does but better. GBA integer scales perfectly to 5x on the Deck's screen, GB/NES/SNES isn't a choice between tiny integer scaling on an already low quality display or bilinear on a large display which again, due to the low quality screen looks pretty awful and in the case of GB/C was never how they were played on real hardware.

Personally, I'd just get a Deck for home use for when I want to play handhelds on my couch and a smaller chinkshit linux-based device for when I want something on the go. Probably the 353p given how comfortable it is in the hand.

The 3DS, despite how many games it technically has access to doesn't feel like it's ever worth using.

Best thing to do is look at your use case and realistically what you want to get out of it. No use getting something like a Deck or a Ayn/Aya product if you don't need that much power, don't bother buying something cheap and weak if you want to emulate GCN and higher.

Look what what you're willing to compromise and what you're not. Unless you have a shit ton of cash burning a hole in your pocket, then just get what's top of the range right now.

3 months with the RG351V so far, and loving it. I use it almost exclusively for GB / GBC / GBA, but sooner or later I will get into snes stuff.

The handheld keeps surprising me with the weird ways in which the manufacturer cut costs. When playing with wired headphones I would keep hearing weird background noises, beeps, etc... Wireless interference from nearby phones and tablets. Not fun when it happens on a crowded train. And yes, it's not the headphones. They work fine with any other device and I have tried a few different ones. Looks like they did not place a lot of shielding inside.

Any shader recommendations? I am using LCD3X or LCD1X for most handhelds, but I'm not sure what would look ok for Snes since most shaders don't work with that 640x480 resolution

In small handhelds it's a lost cause. I don't use them save for 8 way movement in a jrpg like Wild Arms or Final Fantasy VII
.
The way I see it, unless the handheld is "big" and has decent grips, the one at the bottom will always be uncomfortable. Same as how using the d-pad on a non-XL 3DS sucks, or how I had to get a third party controller with the d-pad at the top for for certain Xbox games.

>> No.9706808

In small form factors like this I prefer the analogue stick on the bottom, even if the game primarily uses the stick. It's easier to angle your thumb down to flick a stick than it is to angle it down and also press down on a dpad, my thumb just doesn't bend that way. And I don't like gripping a small handheld asymmetrically just to use the dpad, then the whole thing becomes uncomfortable.
I'm hoping the KT-R1, being roughly as big as a Vita, will be comfortable to use. The Vita is the only handheld I've ever used to have both a comfortable dpad and comfortable sticks, although that's mostly because they're slightly offset.

PowKiddy always seemed like they focus on a unique silhouette first and then decide on hardware and usability later. And they really only shine when they deviate from that process (i.e. the RGB10 Max series)
This looks like they compromised between the two approaches, making a big ol slab first and foremost, but adding arbitrary angles around the edges. I'm guessing the result will be serviceable, but with complaints regarding the ergonomics particularly around the shoulders.

If you live in North America, just save yourself the hassle and buy the Deck.
Even if you ignore the Price/Perf ratio, even if you are weary about the idea of Linux, there's a reason why it's the go-to option. That's because Valve is based in America, shipping at most probably will only take you two weeks for this fucking Leaf anyways, and if you ever have problems, you can just RMA it to Valve instead of waiting for months for something to ship to China.
Or you can even do DIY repairs in a worst case scenario.

With that screen size, shaders are not that necessary (at least for Mega drive and PSX), but they would help with Snes games when using a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The Advantage a good smartphone paired with a mobile controller has is that it will be able to use most desktop shaders thanks to the resolution. Still, I was probably using fakelotters or a potato shader to avoid draining the battery (which is why I ended getting a dedicated handheld)

Battery life on the Steam Deck varies wildly. With a lightweight game or more lighter forms of emulation and a 4-6W TDP, you could probably get about 5-6 hours or maybe more. For more demanding forms of emulation or the latest non-retro AAA trash at a full 15W for stable performance? Probably about 2 and a half.
And yeah, everything else is far worse. I don't know if it's because Windows 11 is just that much of a demanding, horribly bloated OS that drains a lot of potential resources, or if it's because Valve's APU is excellent at managing both power efficiency and performance. Because I dont think the battery is that much larger than something like the Ayaneo 2 or ONEXPLAYER devices, but it still lasts for much longer on the whole.

The point of this thread is handhelds, obviously a majority of computers made in the last decade can probably out preform these devices but raw power isn't the point. I honestly have no fucking idea. like at least 50% of the KT-R1 posts in these threads are from me. That said it sounds like it "runs" PS2 with a lot qualifiers, it's not something you can just recommend to someone who wants full PS2 coverage. Like >>9716246 it's sits between the RP3+ and Odins in terms of power, and the Odins can't run all of PS2 perfectly either. If RP3+ is around 20 - 30% of PS2 playable at fullspeed, I'm expecting the KT-R1 to cover maybe 40 - 60%.

The Retroid Pocket 2+ was the most powerful 4:3 handheld I think, and that plays N64 very well (and the slider works a little better than a stick at emulating the C buttons). However, Retroid doesn't make it anymore, so you're looking at third party resellers or buying used.
Other than that, the Anbernic 353 series is the current most powerful in that aspect ratio, and should also work well. The RG353P is probably the most suitable because of the stacked shoulder buttons.

who else here have a steam deck? how long have you had one? what are your thoughts on it?

I've had mine since july last year and I'm incredibly pleased with it. Has played everything I've thrown at it with minimal issue. It's more or less replaced my PS2/Wii/SNES/Gen and I'm fine with that. Gotta keep the n64 for gen 2 pokemon link though. Only complaint is the size but that's offset by how shockingly comfortable it is. My Switch destroys my wrists and palms even with grip attachments but the Deck doesn't do that to me.

Was just curious, I don't browse here a lot and love my handhelds. I still carry my PSP for a "true" handheld if I ever feel like it. Has come in handy a few times.

I prefer using original handhelds, I have a vita and a 3ds, but a 4.7in handheld that can run half of the gamecube library is amazing and I'm willing to deal with low quality hardware for that experience.

Google "EmuDeck" and you should find loads of tutorials. I got mine set up months ago so I don't know which ones are "definitive" at this point but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. But anyway yeah, EmuDeck is an install package of a bunch of different emulators tailor made for Deck use and they receive updates through the app store in desktop mode. It's super nifty and approachable. Only recommendation is I would suggest you install it to your SD card unless you plan on swapping out the internal SSD or only playing a handful of games. The Deck's storage fills up quick due to shader precaches and I can't imagine housing my rom collection on the internal storage.
>>9721856
Wish I could've done this lmao. I jumped straight into emulating and that's mostly all I've done. Good on ya. Should you decide to emulate it's piss easy as described above.

I really like my handheld trifecta of 3DS, Switch, and Android. The 3DS and Switch are modded and the phone is a relatively new/powerful model. The 3DS was my main portable until I got the Switch, now the 3DS is only ever used for DS and 3DS games. I use the Android for things that require a little more power than the Switch can handle, or just doesn't have good emulator for yet, stuff like N64, Gamecube, PS1, PS2, PSP, and of course the occasional Android game. The Switch is for everything else, loaded up with tons of emulators that work fantastically. With these three devices alone I will never run out of video games to play. Switch and Android have the bonus of being able to easily hook up to a TV for when I want the big screen.

I've recently got a Steam Deck and it's great and all but I'm having some problems emulating some PS1 and PS2 games (Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament respectively). I'm using PAL ROMs because those are the versions I've grown up with, but the actual gameplay (i.e. the fights) looks slower than it should be (yet fluid and not stuttery). To me it looks like both emulators are running their game like an NTSC one at 60 Hz but playing it like a PAL one at 50 Hz, hence slowing it down at 83% speed. I "solved" the problem on DuckStation by forcing NTSC timing but PCSX2 doesn't have that option, so I'm stuck. Does anon know how to properly solve this?
