Did anyone else feel like this was the most wholesome place ever in a video game even before knowing Mother games?

No, because I actually grew up with Earthbound long before GC was ever even dreamt up as a concept, kiddo.

Never had Nintendo consoles as a kid, I played most of their games through emulation so can't really relate to discovering some games through Smash. I remember being really surprised that Pit was in Smash because I thought Kid Icarus was obscure as hell

That's not the Sonic Adventure 2 chao garden.

Adventure 1 OST makes it the superior chao garden. My heart is about to explode because of the nostalgia holy shit, I rarely feel true nostalgia but this is something else

Music is good, but have you played the Dreamcast SA1 chao garden recently? Its extremely bare bones and lacks quality of life features. It makes raising chao more cumbersome than it should be.
The Gamecube port gave it the overhaul it needed.

What's wholesome about some grassland with selfish alien babies

Literally raising babies?

There is even a free remake of just the garden that improves the visuals a lot

If you continuously raise a chao with a specific character they will grow attached to them and excitedly run over to nuzzle against their leg whenever they enter the chao garden. They'll also scribble drawings of that character on the ground if they know the drawing skill.

Admittedly I've only ever played the GC version and the Dreamcast mod for the Steam release which most likely retained the DX's improvements. But I have heard that the original chao garden wasn't all that great, yeah

It went from green grass and blue skies to dull grass and murky air

It's a cool concept but it also lost 90% of the charm

This was my favourite stage in Melee when I was a kid because it reminded me of my town.

Wholesome? There's a huge sign that says 'Drugs'! I can't believe this was in a Nintender game.

Dont sweat it, anon. You've experienced the most definitive way to play SA1. The Steam release with the Dreamcast restoration mod is the best possible experience to have with the game.

I do remember playing this stage on Melee and sometimes having the urge to stop fighting and just explore the town and scenery around us.

There was something very offputting about seeing this cool 3d area around us but being artificially limited to a single plane near these three buildings.

Pause the match and tilt the camera away from the front plane and you'll see what I mean - you suddenly become aware of how detailed the scenery in this level is and get the urge to "break out" of the fight and explore.

That’s pretty wild. Nice find! I always loved how melancholy it gets then back to pumping out that techno wave happiness. Interesting evolution from these two tracks.

Melee was better for it. Sakurai later on got this autism about using the first stage music because "that's what people who played the game would know." Melee has the best soundtrack though precisely because of weird picks like this.

I thought the stage was decently fun in Smash Brothers "Melee". The only thing that disappointment me regarding it was that it was one of the levels that did not contain a unique stage in the game's Adventure mode. I had never heard of Earthbound prior to it's release, and that might have been an interesting way to learn more about the series (Aside from the in game trophies).
