I get that Melee is forever written in history as the best ever but imo Smash 64 is very underrated. Not only It laid the foundation to the great series but it was really good on its own. If you didn't experience it back when in 1999 then you missed out.

They just hate on popular games.

I like Smash 64 because of the echo in the sound design. It's why I also really like the first three Donkey Kong Country games and Dark Souls.

More games need echo.

You mean fighting games? Smash wasn't a fighting game. It was much more of a....party vs. platformer.

I mean not really. Smash has about as much in common with fighting games as a beat em up or wrestling game does, which are all separate genres.

Actually I'm the Mortal Kombat Scorpion fan, KoF Terry and Mai fan, and Street Fighter Ryu player who thinks Ryu is boring but the best vehicle for playing. Do you recognize me? I'm not much of a Tekken guy, 3D fighters are kind of not my pace, but Kazuya is the best in Tekken.

>>9672902
If you're going to play the party platformer Smash, you may as well pick any Nintendo character you liked best as a little kid, that's the point, it's just to have fun with your childhood characters.

Melee has an amazing single player experience. I actually prefer og smash gameplay, dropped frames and all, but Melee has all those unlockables and single player options that just work. It’s a joy even if ur solo, and encourages actual solo play iirc because some of the characters are locked behind said stuff, so it was a race w your buddies to try and work through the SP to see if you could find and unlock secrets.

It was on Playstation as well, which certainly wasn't niche. And Dreamcast, more niche as it was, was more popular with older kids at the time if anybody.

Chrono Cross has some deliciously satisfying chunky sound effects with nice echoes. The critical hit sound effect for the MC's weapon is legitimately my favorite sound effect in vidya. Woefully underrated.

One of the worst “features” of this shit series. Often times people die more often from stage deaths than actual battle. The items are the best part, and even then it is hardly a fighting game.

I always preferred 64, even when Melee was new. Mainly I like how much harder the hits feel and how much more dangerous it is to get near 100% damage. Melee moved Smash in a direction toward relying on long combos to do any decent damage and making high damage percentages too survivable. Melee has much less of that scrappy party brawler feeling and generally doesn't feel as friendly for newcomers to pick up and play as 64.

>Smash, Melee especially, is likely to be at least as competitive as any fighting game, given both the longevity of it's competitive scene, and the complete lack of any fighting game expert succeeding in coming close to mastering it
>This is clearly completely reasonable to anyone who's actually tried playing it seriously, as mastering it's movement mechanics, DI etc. are undoubtedly highly nuanced skills that have no equivalent in traditional fighting games, and there is nobody who has offered a reasonable argument against this

Not him and obviously it's competitive because it's s multi-player game. But chess is more competitive than either Smash or Street Fighter anc is not a fighting game. Genre is not determined by simply whether something is competitive or not. Smash players can say all day long it's the most complex competitive game ever made but that doesn't change what it is.
