I tried to retrobright my yellowed Super Famicom with hydrogen peroxide at 3% but it made the plastic brittle and it's still pretty yellow. Some parts of the vent at the back broke off while I was drying it.

So anyway, I've been looking for replacement shells but Aliexpress doesn't seem to sell any. What should I do?

SFC and PAL SNES cases are the same, the front bit that says the consoles name is a separate piece that you can swap between them
So just get an untested cheap console of either flavor and swap it to your working console. Also stop giving a shit about yellowed plastic, you're not operating a fucking museum.

Who cares if some vents on the back are broken? You're never going to see the back unless you pick the thing up and examine it. A few scratches and dings give it character.
>Also stop giving a shit about yellowed plastic, you're not operating a fucking museum.
Yellowed plastic looks like absolute shit though, completely ruins the color scheme of the console.

Why the fuck are the console reshells so damn expensive when handheld shells are so cheap?

I get it's more material, but the cost of the material should be pretty much negligible compared to the production and handling cost.

Even very simple shells like the Megadrive 2 cost over 100$. It's literally two halves with 2 buttons. You could get a fully functioning Megadrive 2 in mint condition for that price.

Not defending prices, but I work in product design and the tooling process is expensive. When you factor the relatively low volumes that are going to be sold of these shells, they amortise some of the tooling cost into the price. A good quality tool is going to cost up to $20,000 and in some cases that's per individual part.

This is like the third time I've see anons fucking shit up by retrobrighting, even when they followed instructions to a T. Putting me off to the whole process really.

I have a SNES that looks mostly like the one on the right in OP's pic, but the weirdly enough the middle bit (with the logo, underneath the eject buutton) is piss yelllow. Not that much of an issue, but something I thought I should fix eventually. Guess I can either continue dealing with it or paint the whole thing to some funky ass color, retrobright doesn't seem like a safe alternative at the moment though.

>What should I do?
If there's nothing on AliExpress, I'd suggest trying to find a broken down Super Nintendo or Super Famicom and just gutting it, keeping the shell for your console. I've seen some SNES shells the other day, for the European model, see-through plastic - but they were around a hundred bucks a kit, so fuck that noise.

>If yellowing is caused by being exposed to sunlight, how would this work? Or is this some joke?

The Yellowing of plastic is caused by a combination of age, heat, the plastic slowly breaking down on the molecular level, and UV light (common household light bulbs used in lamps). This takes place over YEARS.

Sunlight reverses the yellowing effect if left out in direct sunlight for several days. Sunlight causes the degraded molecules to re-oxidize them and restore themselves to their original color.

It has to be sunlight. Not an artificial light source. Sunlight ONLY.

>> No.9672657

sunlight through window -> yellowing
direct sunlight -> de-yellowing

That's it. That game was left for years behind a glass display, which itself was directly in the sun through a ceiling window.

>> No.9672664

>>9672145
Yes it's real. Most people don't do it because it takes many days out in direct sunlight. And people who live in cities can't just leave an SNES sitting outside for 7 days. Especially if they live in an apartment. Other people don't have the patience for it either. They want the yellow gone now.

The yellowing (technically oranging) is actually an intermediate stage of the oxidation process. As ABS breaks down, it produces chemicals called polydienes. These are extremely brightly coloured, and usually purple or orange. The most well known of these is beta carotene, the chemical that makes carrots orange (not that ABS decays into that specific one, mind, in just using that as an example).
However, polydienes are themselves vulnerable to oxidation, and will lose their colouring as they decay further. That is what any retrobriting does: it breaks down the polydienes through oxidation. In order to do this you need some form of energy, typically much more than caused the formation of polydienes in the first place. Direct sunlight works because of the UV and heat, but exposure to peroxide plus UV and/or heat also works. Heat alone would work, but you'd need so much you'd melt the plastic.

Do NOT leave plastic in the sun. It WILL make it extremely brittle as the plastic breaks down further. Just make a paste of peroxide and baking soda and BRIEFLY scrub the outer shell. The very top layer of oxidation is all you need to treat. DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING ON IT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. Then rinse it off with cold water .

There's no explanation for how 3% peroxide penetrates this kind of plastic and causes it to be more brittle. The peroxide only creates the conditions that allow for the outermost layer to quickly oxidize. The plastic that people want to deyellow is often already old and structurally compromised. You could soak a different super famicom for weeks and it would come out exactly as solid as you started

Anon. Plastic is not so fragile that it will fade and be destroyed after a few days in sunlight. If it were that weak, then thousands of children's gameboys would have been destroyed in the 1990s. Plastic is very robust.

It's legit. Go look up YouTube videos and posts about people doing it.

Retrobrite isn't really a solution. It doesn't last and as you also found out, it weakens the plastic. Just live with it or find a console/shell that hasn't yellowed - some do and some don't as different plastics were used in production throughout its lifespan.

>> No.9674317

Don't use retro bright. It eats the plastic and makes it brittle and crack. Instead Leave it out in the direct sunlight for a few days.

But the plastic will eventually turn yellow again because of age. You can either repeat the process and use the sun. Or you can buy a replacement case.
