It gets a bad rap. It's a terrible "game", but as an "interactive cartoon" (notably one you're not trying to "win" in), it's actually pretty damn good. >In short:
>*Controls are just plain bad in general. Your characters control like bricks, jump physics are extremely floaty, and the game is awful at recognizing button input for special moves.
>*The different-leveled arenas were a bad idea in general, and the way the split screen wraps around when character dash under each other is hideously annoying.
>*Many special moves running off a power meter that's charged up by blocking attacks is bad enough, but the super move system is just insane. They all work the same way - move a specific distance from the enemy, input the correct command for the move of your choice (most characters have two, they vary in how much damage they deal and how much of the power meter they eat), which will start a cutscene. The other player can now input a command for one of several counter moves, all similar for all characters, which will either reduce, completely prevent, or return the damage from the move. It should be evident how unfair this system is, especially when fighting the computer.
>*The characters lack... identity as far as the gameplay is concerned. There are no real defining fighting styles, and characters tend to have very similar movesets.

>I'm really hard pressed to think of worse fighting games than this. The sequels are better, but none of them are particularly good games, just the typical "these games will sell on their license, why put in effort" drek you usually get from games based on popular licenses. No one would've ever given these things a second look if not for that Dragonball Z logo.

If you look at it from four, five and six, maybe it’s Wednesday, Thursday and Friday?

803
>Who does she resemble, you, or your wife?
resemble, you or your wife?
You really don't need the extra comma after "you" here.

The script is looking good! I should be able to check more chunks later.

>> No.967504

667 is tricky, IMO. I'm only a native speaker that doesn't know the rules at all, so take this with a grain of salt, but the way I see it, both of these are correct and denote a different type of emphasis:

>As expected with only three lives, Stage 5 is his limit.
>As expected, with only three lives Stage 5 is his limit.
>As expected, with only three lives, Stage 5 is his limit.

The first emphasizes that it is expected because of the three lives (probably the best choice in context), the second emphasizes that is is not expected because of the lives, but because of something more general (in this case, Arino generally being bad at games). The third is sort of a mixture that doesn't emphasize either particularly.

>>967501

The problem is that the viewer is missing the context that "ikki" means "one life" and "uprising" at the same time, and in the end, that might be more confusing than anything. I'd say we stick with the more basic level gag.

Actually I might have been mistaken and there is only one Arino card. Here's the translation of that "CEO" card from the SA thread:

Chief Arino

Chief for about eight years. Birthday: 2/25/1972

Hometown: Osaka. Interests: Picnics. Blood Type: B.

Data from when he was a baby

Childhood Nickname: Arishin (taken from “Arino" and “Shinya" his first and last names)

Favorite Foods: Vinegared Soup, Japanese fried chicken ("karaage")

Least Favorite Food: Dark Seaweed

Favorite TV Show: It’s 8 AM! Everyone gather ‘round! (an old variety show that aired from the late 60s to the mid 80s)

Learning: Abacus

Warning: If left to my own devices, I could easily play around for two hours just going “Go!" “Stop!". Please tell me if I start to do this during a live challenge.

Details: He got promoted from Senior Staff to Section Chief and then to Chief, but stopped there. He no longer participates in the battles for promotions. His gaming skill is about average. However, he always gets caught in the traps that the game creators want people to get caught in. He’s good at level grinding, and he often has epiphanies when playing puzzle games. When he gets to boss characters in a game, he has a habit of running away at first. Pay attention when he says “I might get to go home early today" during broadcasts.

If you want to get real technical, be sure to look up the difference on Wikipedia between a hyphen, an en dash, an em dash, a figure dash, a minus sign, and whatever else I've forgotten.

You use the en dash when you'd sort of have a pause speaking. Waxman-Geshman's syndrome (dash). Also to show a relation. Anything-related should be a dash I think.

Between numbers you always use a figure dash, it's slightly higher than an en dash but lower than a minus sign. This makes it not run into the horizontal on your 4s and stuff. Check it out. Un-cleared might require an en dash, not a hyphen.

I think that the scripts look best when there's a high degree of contrast between Kan narrating and Arino (and others) speaking. They're perfectly willing to have their games featured on the show, so I'm puzzled about their decision.

>>970236
No, they need permission before recording a challenge and before distributing the DVDs. It's difficult for them to get clearance for the other segments to be included on the DVDs. DVD rights are a bitch in general. Kakaricho might know some more details.

Which line has the long pause? 831 should be okay as two sentences, but 936 is probably best with the em dash.

831 has a definite pause, so I made it into two sentences. I also added a line translating the text under the pictures. For 936 I went with the hyphen.

Taking another look at that, you're correct to omit the comma. If the statement was about Toujima going to the clubs as an addition to something else that he was doing, the comma would be needed. As it is, the statement is about Toujima going to the clubs as Urakawa is doing. The discussion about the clubs was previously established, so no comma is needed.

He's right, there was half of a narrated line and screen text missing from the script. I've added it in now.
When I translate, I keep notes about miscellaneous stuff at the bottom of a script, stuff like "check this line, recheck that joke, check timing at this time" etc, stuff I want to check before posting the script, so I don't add it to the pastebin.

When I copy/pasted, I missed the two lines at the end. That's a big miss, and I'm really sorry for it. Based on this, I decided to keep my notes on a separate document from now on.

Dashes are fine for casual breaks in speech, but I'd say that it just depends on what feels right for this line. If you added an "or" to the final part, I think that the comma would be acceptable. I'll type the line a few different ways for comparison, and you can decide which one is best.

This is a direct transcript from the CD's lyric sheet (because I wouldn't have understood the half of it either):

I found a dusty box, full of memories
Going through the closet, hidden in the back
In the days when we were both young, you and I
Nothing mattered more than that sepia cartridge

On the screen of the TV
Fighting for his life was a tiny hero
Punching, kicking, edge jump, go under
Go save the princess, my hero

Schools don't teach secret tricks, how to put in the cheat codes
How to cast resurrect at the right time

Everything I ever needed from life
All of the important things I learned from games

Reset, Reset,
One more time Reset, we can always do it over
Start, Start
No matter what, you gotta Start

Last continue

Walking home after, school, everyday I'd go
To a little candy store run by an old aunt
Two arcade cabinets weathered from the rain
My coin would get stuck almost every time

Shining sun in the blue sky
Lit up the game screen, making it hard to see
Cut in line and get yelled by the other kids
Co-op play would always end in a fight

Schools don't serve junk food, things with artificial colors
Spicy, sour, extra sweet, I loved them all

Everything ever needed from life
They were free to purchase at the candy store

Reset, Reset
One more time Reset,
We can always do it over
Start, Start,
Right now, we're gonna Start

Last continue

Reach your hand beyond the red box
Pull the plug and it's GAME OBERA
With our eyes shining like they did back then
Let's battle it out once again

Last continue
Last continue

As an aside, it's pretty interesting how the song doesn't work that well in regular English (that is, not Engrish). Mostly noticeable with "Last Continue", where the melody is clearly made for "La-su-to Con-tin-ue". In regular English, you'd have to stretch it out to "La-aa-ast Con-tin-ue", which sounds off in my head.

Can I ask a question to Kakaricho and/or Abunai? How will you handle lines where multiple people are speaking at once? SA usually uses short dashes to distinguish different people overlapping each other like this:

- Yes?

I think that's also how captions for TV and movies are done.

After thinking it over for a bit, it's become part of the charm for me. They could have gotten a professional English singer for it, but this is Nakayama's song, and god damnit, he's going to try his best, even if he often has problems even getting close to the correct pronunciation (either because he doesn't know or because it's too hard without proper, long practice).

Nakayama and Inoue are really fairly similar in that regard. Both fuck up semi-regularly, but in the end, they always give it their best and try their hardest (which you can't say for every AD - even somebody like Toujima seems to not try his hardest occasionally) or somehow try to make up for it (for instance in Nakayama's debut episode, where he screwed up at the end, but put in extra work to give Arino a good position to work from).

...and then there's Sasano, who just makes everybody else (except maybe Cardigan Takahashi) look bad.

Go here

http://www.fujitv.co.jp/otn/gamecenter/index.html

scroll down, click on the box in the picture, type your name in the first field and the game you want to see in a challenge (in Japanese) in the second. The third is just if your recommending an arcade for Tamage, so ignore it. All that said and I've said it before, but a bunch of people with foreign names suddenly requesting certain games might seem odd, so I'd be glad to request any games you're interested in (I've got a foreign name too, but I've been requesting and trying to win the signed games for a long time from the same address it might be less strange).

It's cool you were able to give him a gift of a game you like a lot. It got a Japanese release, so maybe if there`s a special event sort of connected to the game`s name, etc it might someday get a challenge (the PS only gets busted out for special events)

They're not medal games. Medal games are games that are played with "medals" (arcade-specific metal "coins") that give out such medals as prizes if you do well. These medals can then be exchanged for prizes.
Pretty similar to the ticket redemption games they have in the US, except with medals instead of tickets, and the need to purchase medals to play with instead of using coins.

What are you talking about? The Mystery Dungeon series spans some 15-20 games, many of which are based on other franchises. The first one was based on Dragon Quest, while others have been based on franchises such as Final Fantasy, Pokemon and Gundam.

It`s kind of difficult to explain, and a long, off topic rant, but simply put, in Japan, if you can put money in a machine and therefore, win money, it's illegal. That's why with modern medal games and pachinko you change your money for medals/balls respectively.

IME, medal games just let you collect medals to keep playing the game (you can get a card that functions as an account for left over medals when you're done playing, or if you don't want any proof you've been playing, a fingerprint scan suffices), whereas you can trade pachinko balls for a prize (and surprise surprise! There always a shop separate from the pachinko parlour (but close-by!) that will 'buy' your 'prize' for money)

AFAIK, the games Arino plays used to just give you money, but due to revisions in they laws, they now give you a ticket you can use to but things from the store. This skirts the law, and leads to some people calling them 'retro medal games' (you play with money, but only win things from the store that owns them).

All of that is just from what storekeepers/friends have told me when I asked, so if anyone is more knowledgeable please let me know.

This reminded me list I once started (then abandoned), trying to name any challenge-appropriate "Western Games" that got published on the 'big' Japanese consoles in some form.

http://pastebin.com/1f5LHEix

It's UK-heavy because the list was fuelled by patriotism post-Lemmings challenge (no other made-in-Scotland challenge-appropriate games came to mind, so I settled for 'UK'); hopefully it inspires other Anons to think of other good picks for the show.

Try to imagine following the show back when TV-Nihon was the only group and they had several months of delay between each release.

After they came to halt, I practically forgot about GCCX for at least a year before I found out on some random /a/ thread that SA and some small random groups had subbed various episodes. In the end I got pissed by the fact that SA did things out of order and consequently spoiled the shit out of Super Mario World's ending by doing SM64 first, so I started following the show in chronological order regardless of the avaibility of subs.

From what I've heard, it's just people complaining about certain tracks not being in, which can be explained with licensing issues, what with Japan's laws being so buttfuck insane in that regard.

I expected having to compound the CD with my own downloads the moment it was announced, because they can't fit all the iconic tracks on one CD anyway. I'd rather have cool, new stuff like the English version of Last Continue than some tracks I could have just as well downloaded from the internet.

So I've been working a bit, and I think I have a decent list for the first draft, but I've got a bit of a problem, that being Japanese text. Just like the guy that uploaded the soundtrack rip that I currently have on my hard drive, I want to have the titles and artists written out with standard letters, but I don't have a clue about Japanese and Google Translate only brings one so far (with names it's alright). The tracks I'm having trouble with are as follows:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ6Cfz01FWs - Aces of Hardware theme

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqHWTeD4K_4 - Game and Watch theme

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHZFTcnZMww - Famicom Comic Cafe theme

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5RiuwHY2K8 - Sing About Whatever You Want theme

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wdS3fpahY8 - Yuuyu No Quiz De GO! GO! episode theme

If anybody could give me title and artist for those, that'd be great. They all seem to be mainstream tracks, so it shouldn't cause too much trouble for anybody who knows his stuff.

While I'm at it, here are the other tracks I'm taking into the first draft:

Aitakatta - Male AD Takahashi's theme
Jack's Theme from Headhunter - "Arino's Theme" (best name I could figure, I've heard some people refer to this as the closest thing we've got for a theme for Arino)
Pacman - Pacman 2 episode music (mostly because it's catchy as fuck)
Ride On Time - Pilotwings episode music (same reason, I really like those two songs)
Serafuku o Nugasanai de - A Waste of Color theme
Unknown Title - TamaGe theme #1
The Road Home Soundtrack - Everything I Needed To Know etc. theme
Yasumi Jikan Desuka - TamaGe theme #2

Suggestions about what to add or remove (maybe there's some important song I missed?) welcome.

I think for a CD, it should be about what are the most important musics, and I think those are the themes. So in a fan made CD, I would put it these:

Cameraman Abe's theme
Game showcase music(reaching for the stars)
"Arino's Challenge" BGM
"The Aces of Hardware Won't Appear" theme
"The Romantic Never Ends" theme
"Game & Watch, I Can't Leave You Alone" theme
"Famicom Comic Cafe" theme
"Sing About Whatever You Want" theme
"Project CX" theme(base song)
Original song "Sayonara Game" sung by AD Watanabe
Original song "Fight! Chief Fighter" sung by AP Ishida and The Cardigans (AD Takahashi, AD Katayama, AD Itou)
North Trip theme song
"Everything I Needed to Know I Learned From Strategy Guides" theme
Original song "Last Continue" sung by AD Nakayama
Male AD Takahashi's theme
Yuuyu no Quiz de GO! GO! Challenge theme
A waste of color BGM
"If you're going to a game center" Theme

Well, I have everything from the CD itself already in there. I'm currently uploading an archive which clocks in at 1 hour, 45 minutes. If I added the North Trip and the Project CX theme, that would come out to roughly 1 hour, 55 minutes, which is a decent length for a 2-CD package.

The way I see it, there's too many notable songs to make just one 80 minute CD if you have everything available.

And because I have nothing else to do and the idea appealed to me, I'm currently picking out songs for a little compilation I figure I'd call "Music To Kacho On By: VG Edition", which would consist of music from challenged games that were memorable for one reason or another. For example:

-- Mine Cart Madness from Donkey Kong Country
-- Dhalsim's theme from Street Fighter II
-- The level theme from Quest of Ki
-- The karaoke song from Takeshi's Challenge
-- Scrap Brain Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog (because that's where Nakayama first made his impact)

Good idea, that's in too. Here's the list so far:

-- Stage 5 from Adventure Island
-- The music from the level with the falling blocks from Castlevania 3
-- Mine Cart Madness from Donkey Kong Country
-- The Can Can theme from Lemmings (came from the level where he got the solution from the audience)
-- Stage 3 from Prince of Persia (also used in the level with the Minister)
-- The level theme from Quest of Ki
-- The main theme from S.O.S.
-- Scrap Brain Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog
-- Dhalsim's theme from Street Fighter 2
-- Haunted Graveyard from Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts
-- Oouna Theme from Umihara Kawase (plays in the level with the squid)
-- Stage 5 theme from Yuuyu no Quiz de GO! GO!
-- The Rainy New Land from Takeshi's Challenge
-- The Rocketbelt theme from Pilotwings
-- Soda Popinski's intro into the main theme from Punch-Out!
-- The main play theme from Super Puyo Puyo
-- The level theme from Tower of Babel
-- The speeder bike theme from Battletoads
-- Death Wind from F-Zero
-- Cossack Stage I from Mega Man IV
-- The First Hole from Kirby's Dream Course
-- The second boss theme from Gimmick!
-- The Bowser themes from Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island and Super Mario 64
-- The main theme from Doki Doki Panic
-- The underground theme from Super Mario World 3 (plays in 8-1, where Arino got hung up ad infinitum)
-- Prince Fleaswallow's Rap from Parappa The Rapper

So far looking pretty decent, although I might be overbloating the list a bit. But then again, it's a compilation, not a CD. Even if, so far, everything together clocks in at about an hour.
