Not sure what thread you mean my bro, I don't have the time for much 4chins these days,
Played back in the day as a kid, wasn't very good, revisited as a post-30 boomer, completed as humans, now in the process of completing as orcs.

Warcraft 1 is more like a turn-based game than RTS.
Set up your units in a formation near a choke point and lure the computer in. After his army dies you go and destroy his base. It gets real old after the first few missions. I prefer the frantic pace of Warcraft 2.

Yeah, basically. All the levels kind of operate like that; set up choke point and then move in once their strength is sapped. Or just keep spamming daemons at them until it's over.
The competitive, faster paced bit is setting up the choke point(s)... and then yeah after that it's chilled but I kind of like that. Like bossing your way through Fallout 2 or Morrowind for the tenth time; yeah there's no difficulty or new stuff any more but it's still fun.

I've completed that and Beyond the Dark Portal and yeah that is some satisfying gameplay. Totally different style of game in BTDP where you basically need to rush an enemy base at the start of each of the later levels to avoid being overwhelmed later.

I mention Herzog Zwei in the WC1 review since it was a game that directly inspired Dune 2 which itself inspired WC1. Interesting game.
