Lately I've been thinking about all of the mobile java games I used to play in the early 2000's, like from 2004 to 2006 or 7. Feels like an entire genre of games that nobody even really knows existed is gone. Like I used to play an officially licensed top down version of call of duty.

I've seen pictures posted in a /v/ thread I can't find anymore of some backgrounds from the Resident Evil remake stripped of the blurry jpeg overlay. They had very high resolution and razor sharp models or something underneath all that. They were just blank white textures but they were insanely detailed, down to things like rivets and nails and flower petals laying on a table. I have no idea how all that stuff works, so maybe it's like a separate flat layer for lighting? Either way it was really cool to see.

What do you believe "asset" means? If 3D scenes or individual 3D models are used to create prerendered backgrounds or sprites, THOSE are the assets relative to the game, not the source 3D files.

Not to mention OP is talking about "high resolution" and "uncompressed" stuff, so obviously he's talking about render output (or, alternatively, he may simply be ignorant I guess).

I am interested though in whether the source files have been preserved and could be still usable in modern software.

I've tried multiple times. It's barely progressed since ESRGAN. We've hit the wall with single image super resolution; the majority of new models are focused around improving PSNR, a useless but easily testable metric, and usually the state of the art can only boast a 0.05 improvement on Urban100. And any model that did present a huge improvement would be too large to train on consumer hardware anyway. https://paperswithcode.com/task/super-resolution/latest#code

The DKC trilogy isn't like Myst or a PS1 rendered background, the graphics are so compressed that they have more in common with pixel art, especially 2 and 3.
