Does any single retro platforming game come close to the SMB3/SMW?

I tried so many but none of them reach the complexity.
The level/world structure, the secrets, the power-ups, the way each individual level is well thought out and designed. Every other platformer seems really simple in comparison and unpolished.

Are there any other platformers on that level?

Goemon 2 on SNES is the only one. Some brilliant platforming, better bosses and great vibes throughout

They actually were, especially compared to their peers. I mean, we can still enjoy Zelda 1 today (with a guide at least) but holy shit are most of the other action-adventure games from the 80s borderline unplayable nowadays

Unfortunately not but if you raise the bar a little more you would reach pic related.

Most platformers are better to be honest. This game only gets attention because it's made by Nintendo.

>> No.9637178

Easy answer, Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country 2 on the SNES. Both two functionally perfect games.

Why do people have to tell Yoshitards what is wrong with YI in every thread just so they can pretend the conversation never happened in the next thread? It's a slow and piss easy puzzle platformer and it needs a romhack not to be annoying as fuck and make red coins work as intended

Nope. Even many modern Nintendo platformers go the 'maze-route'. The old Megaman games as-well. But you shouldn't dismiss older mario games like it seems you attempted to do in your post. They also have good level design.
Donkey Kong Country games also.

>>9637164
>grab the coins, do the chore
>enemies are generic insta deaths, not much AI there
Good example though. What makes for good level design is how the obstacles act.

I see, unfortunately, a lot of bait itt.

>>9637562
Nobody is arguing this. Who cares which is better? They're both incomparable and they both work as a base for something bigger. Play romhacks so you will have to stop worrying about this tribalistic mindset.

>not a single post arguing about SMB v SMW because it's not the topic

What is up with this board and blatant samefagging?

And no, SMW is obviously better. Objectively better controls and jumps no longer retardedly high, much better visuals, more content, way more variety, Yoshi, no tap to float

The gameplay itself is about as mediocre as you can get for a platformer too.

It can only happen if the level has two walls with a one tile wide gap between them and YOU as the player must smash the jump button really quickly. Like the only way it'd happen is if you're mashing just to see how fast you can go.

Sucks that in most platformers, the enemies rarely go beyond being just a walking hitbox, which may or may not throw some projectiles. In SMW, we have: Chargin' Chucks, shell-kicking blue koopas, kamikaze koopas... Why can't we have some more complex enemies?

>>9639096
Sprites are too big. The dumb barrel cannon gimmick is very lame and turns the game into an annoying rhythm game.
