/vr/ - Retro Games

Eh, I started playing it expecting it to be Dracula X with animu cutscenes but found the action and level design to be sub par compared to X, 3 and Bloodlines.

I have it on the Wii, but it's unfortunately held hostage by it being on the Wii.
There's the PSP version, but eh...
Then there's fucking with emulators or paying high prices for a working Turbo Duo/PC Engine.

It works great with Magic Engine. Just get a license file for it and mount the image with a virtual SCSI drive (Daemon Tools does this, but you know, it's Daemon Tools, lots of people hate it).

what's wrong with Rondo of Blood? I thought people loved that game. Hell it's in my top 5 favorites.

Or you could just grab that emu+rom pack some guy uploaded on /rs/ somewhere. Blue Ryu VS Darkstalkers I believe was the name of the archive. That's how I got around to playing it. Everything is configured just right, and it gives you options before starting if you want to do some improvements like a slight overclocking to remove slowdown.

X is underrated, it's a great game.
I also prefer it's non-anime approach, that last cutscene when Dracula dies is strangely haunting.

I've played Rondo of Blood, Dracula X, and Dracula X Chronicles, and beat them all. Multiple times. Richter Belmont is best Belmont.

I play through the entire game like once a month. This and Bionic Commando are my favorite video games.

I beat it not too long ago, probably my favorite Castlevania game out of the few I've played (the others being I, II, III, and IV). The alternate levels are cool, though Dracula was a little too easy, especially after going through the hell of his magician sidekick dude.

Is it wrong if I think that Rondo of Blood was the best Castlevania game? It seemed like the ultimate culmination of the gameplay of the series up to that point.

Honestly liked it more than SOTN and everything that came after. The series definitely became a lot less polished after going Metroidvania (still fine games, though).

Rondo is probably one of the most polished games I've played from that time period; the fact that most enemies are only encountered like 5 times(if not only once) is proof of that.

SOTN looks really good as well, but the way Rondo was animated is a lot smoother despite being much older. Alucard's sprites look awesome, but they reused a lot of parts for the bosses/common enemies.

As for gameplay, it depends on which style you like best. I like the CVIII/Rondo hybrid style the most, but normal Classicvania/Metroidvanias are great as well.

I did. It introduced me to the other classicvanias, I beat it mostly with Maria at first and then manned up and did a Richter run. Then I went and played the original trilogy. It was amazing.

It's not just for the fact that it's cheap as fuck, the game was designed around Richter's capabilities. Plus it doesn't feel true to the themes of the game killing the undead by throwing birds and cats. Just look at Maria's game over screen, it's clear that she is a joke character and therefore shouldn't be the standard for a normal playthrough.

It's not. Play the first couple of levels of both and you'll see that's not the case. They do have some of the same enemies and mechanics, but X is more similar to the nes games in terms of structure. It's totally worth playing both games.
