I recommend giving it a try, it's got a couple interesting twists on it, though you'll have to grab a save for the VN if you don't want to read through it (it's an amazing read but it's a sequel for f/sn).

I'm just repeating what someone else told me here:
The first game is awful, most of the scenes are barely coherent.
The second, a passionate fan contacted them and was willing to translate it for cheap. He did a fine job, but there wasn't an editor so you can tell it's a rough first draft. The game also has bugs and crashes not present in the original game due to poor conversion.
It's still better than nothing in the end.

>> No.9635285

>>9634829
It's easier. For what it's worth it isn't a perfect port and the windowed presentation doesn't benefit from the Dreamcast's higher resolution nearly as much as ST3 and 4 did, and the final PC version is the best content wise.

It isn’t THAT awful, but pretty bad, yeah. Second is way better. And what makes me mad even many years after, SW3 was also fully translated, but ultimately canned and publisher went bankrupt soon after.
Gotta give it to Russian localization team, they worked without any support from Sega whatsoever and had to create tools to insert translated text from scratch.

I played the PSP versions of 1 and 2 which I thought were supposed to the best apart from slighly compressed audio. Playing on a PStv at 1080i the text was far clearer than I could get from my Dreamcast although granted that may be different for people who output VGA or HDMI.

What a fucking retarded opinion. First, you don't need to know the language to understand the quality of voice acting. If you can't pick up basic stuff like tones and emotions, you have autism and no amount of language learning will help. Try doujin games and bad TV dramas to see what poor Japanese acting really is like.
Secondly, complaining an actor sound like a trope is idiotic. That's literally the point, nobody is going to complain that the moeblob character sounds like a moeblob (except you, it seems). It's like watching marvelshit and wondering why the acting isn't naturalistic.

You mean there are less unvoiced lines or that there are bonus features it is missing? If it is the former that kind of sucks since I didn't like that a small but noticeable amount of the games were unvoiced. Fan translations have on average probably always been worse for it, given that most are made for either attention whoring purposes, and/or by people looney enough to force their own head canon. If I thought I was the only person on the planet capable of translating my favourite text heavy game to English I would do it. In reality though everything worth translating will be translated on a long enough timeline, it isn't my problem if the translation they make is sub-par and I ain't working for free. I am sure most people think the same way and that just leaves the weird people who want to ensure people too lazy to learn Japanese can play 90s dating simulators.

>> No.9640667

>In reality though everything worth translating will be translated on a long enough timeline
Of course it won't. Do you have any idea about how many Japanese-only games there are? PC Engine and Saturn libraries are still mostly untouched, and let's not even talk about computer games. And some officialy "localized" games are such in a sorry state they basically need to be translated again.
It's also not a translator issue anyway since hacking is the bottleneck for fan-translations. It's not the 90s' anymore when nobody could speak Japanese for shit and going "konichiwa sushi" would get you a job at Working Design.
