Not quite, they stopped aging in 95. You can find Japanese manuals for some of the games on sadpanda. The 94 manual says Yuri is 19, then the manuals for 95, 97 and 98 all say she's 20. At some point they just gave up on listing ages, the XI manual no longer includes them.

KOF '96 had a lot of unused content that wasn't finished, most of it was finally used for '97 but beta versions of those moves are in '96.
Also, some content was added in the NGCD version of the game, like playable Chizuru and Goenitz and the ending was slightly extended (and for some reason they used '97 sprites).
You can use those moves in the bootleg/plus hack of the game.

They very deliberately invoked that kind of vibe. The original AOF was one of the few fighting games of the time that wasn't about a bunch of people joining a fighting tournament, instead it was about two bros beating people up in shady parts of town looking for a kidnapped girl, a plot far more common in beat'em ups. I almost wish AOF had been a beat'em up, it would have been a great one for sure and wouldn't have suffered all the direct comparisons to SF2 that caused a lot of people to look down on it. And the characters could still have been used in KOF anyway.

There's not any ONE reason I like it. I like the weighty pace of the fighting. It feels more heavy than a lot of 2D fighters. I like the stage designs, I like the way the whole thing is framed around exploring Mexico. Nah all those were pretty lame. It's such a shame too because SNK obviously put a lot of effort into AOF3, it's quite possibly the prettiest game on the Neo Geo. The sprites are huge and the rotoscoped animations are fluid as fuck, some stage have some fancy light and shadow effects, the gameplay was vastly improved from the previous games with a really satisfying combo system. But for some reason they chose to put all of that into a side story with a bunch of randos and the incredible latino Hulk for a boss instead of following up on the plot threads laid down in the previous game which had specifically namedropped Jeff Bogard to set up his confrontation with Geese. That's what AOF3 should have been about.

I get the feeling Jeff Bogard is like who Gouken used to be for Capcom, they only had this vague idea of him but didn't really want to commit to a concrete design. Like the OVAs had this kinda traditional looking dude that would have been much more Andy's speed yet supposedly Terry takes far more after him in terms of his fighting style. Destiny's version of Jeff seems a lot more in line with what I'd expect him to look like, and you could conceivably extrapolate a younger version of him for AOF's time period

I dont remember where I heard this but one thing that might’ve stopped AOF3 from taking off is that knockdowns took way to long to recover from, which seems minor until you’re a hundred rounds in and getting fed up with it. I know about the otg hits you can do but everyone always stays down for like five seconds and it breaks the flow of things.

This mostly only applies to the autistic tourney player side of fighting games, since they’re the ones who are playing CONSTANTLY so a little thing that can add up like this becomes a bigger deal.

As a more casual player I liked AoF3 quite a lot. Went through everyone’s story mode last year and had a very fun time. Really enjoyable single player quest for a fighting game.

I really liked the single player stuff for all the AoFs and FFs actually. KoF sort of went too far with the ancient gods and family bloodline and clone army nonsense, but the world of FF/AoF/Garou was a cool one I wanted to see more of. I really like that corny 80s/90s streetbrawler vibe they had.

Orochi may have raised the stakes to a more global sense but there was a very classic shonen esque vibe to it. Nests is where things just got kind of mental. With the secret societies with more money than McDuck building orbital death lasers and having clone armies and just... it was dumb. I don't even remember what Ash was about. Like for real, I know it ended with it getting erased but seriously what was the badguy's goal? And then 14 was just a random ass monster out of nowhere.

I really respect how much SNK’s street fighter clones weren’t actually street fighter clones. And yeah I know these were actually made by the guys behind street fighter 1, big respect for them innovating on their original idea more than capcom did. Of course both companies were great and I’m not trying to derail this into a company wars thread, but with snk’s fighters it really felt like they were trying to do something really different every time. I know some people arent crazy about FF’s lane mechanics but switching them up every game really changed things, just as an example. I’d like to see them take another go at using lanes but I know the fgc would throw a bitchfit.

I'm pretty sure the whole Todoh thing began because he was the only character from AOF1 to not return for AOF2. In AOF3 they expanded this abscence into full blown disappearance and had his daughter looking for him, which was portrayed as a serious issue, but in KOF and the crossover games they turned it into a running gag with Todoh actually following Kasumi in secret as she searches for him.
