It has great music and an interesting plot for the time. Probably one of my favorite intro FMVs ever in the age of flashy intro FMVs. It's a clearly unfinished game though and the battles feel too slow for a jarpig and the dungeon design is ass for the most part. By the time the infamous disk 2 comes you'll probably be more thankful you just get a bunch of plot dumped on you without the gameplay to go with it than not.

I doubt Xenogears will ever be touched again just because of the whole split with the director thing and him forming Monolith Soft to continue the series.

Just finished the game last weak. What I was liking the most about Xenogears thus far was the character interactions and the dynamicness of how the plot played out, so despite the crappy dungeon design and merely serviceable gameplay, disc 2 is pretty much the exact opposite of what I want from the game. The plot is just too over-ambitious and not in a positive way, and feels weighed down by plenty of pseudo-philosophical nonsense that does not personally appeal me nor has much effect into the actual characters. All this forced exposition and dry English doesn't help either.

I was also surprised to see the romance being so praised. Maybe it's because I hate the childhood friend/reincarnation trope, since most writers merely use it as a cheap way justify bonds instead of developing them organically throughout the story, but I found it rather lacking other than two scenes or so (one of them being the mini-arc at Elly's house, at that). The kiss getting censored during that anime cutscene was pretty lame, too.

But hey, at least they showed the huge robot transformation sequence in disc 2, so Takahashi and co. certainly got their priorities in the right place regardless.

Kinda, at least for a long while. Then it's evident they completely ran out of budget. Instead of remastering it they should finish it properly, but it's unlikely either way because Squenix owns the IP.
It's a frustrating game, because it could have been one of the best jRPGs of all time if they'd done it properly until the end.

I legitimately found the sci-fi twists and turns about Deus to be quite fun and fascinating, tying together a bunch of hanging points that I really didn't think were going to be explained in a way that was more satisfying than I expected. I'm not sure how I felt about Elly Christ, but to its credit it had actual Christian themes throughout, not just a bucket-load of Christian imagery for no reason. The Juxtaposition of basic human needs and connections and the absurdly high concept shit going on around them was classic; the sweet and simple romance being part of that (I wouldn't call it anything more than a sweet and simple romance, though).

Overall I'd call it (a) good sci-fi and (b) a trip. Far from perfect and could have benefitted from some paring down, but well worth experience.

Yep, and a lot more (Star Wars, etc). Xenogears was the swan song of pop sci-fi. People might have things they like that have come out since, but 1960-2000 was its own thing and Xenogears epitomizes it.

Is it true the amount of story in disc 2 is 4x the amount that's covered in disc 1, like another anon said? Because of that's true, remaking the unfinished parts 'correctly' would make the game unplayable. 150 fucking hours of - that??

>> No.9635365

>>9635356
It's not 4x the story it's just covered at 4x the pace because they ran out of budget to put in the dungeons and most of the cutscenes. The Disc 1 is 40 hours and Disc 2 covers the same amount of ground in under 10.

>> No.9635386

>>9635356
>Is it true the amount of story in disc 2 is 4x the amount that's covered in disc 1
No, about 20% of the scenarios are on disc 2. The second disc complaining comes exclusively from people who either never completed it or finished the game once 25 years ago.

I've played XG five times and I can tell you that not only is the second disc fine, it has quite a lot of the game's best content (cool dungeons, fairly deep multiplayer fighting game). Some of the scenarios would have been amazing if they were fully fleshed out, but it doesn't hurt the game overall.

While the second disc was the result of time and budget running out, the narration did add a more "epic" atmosphere to the whole global happenings. There was also stuff to do (boss fights and dungeons) in-between so it wasn't just a narrative.

The alternative was stopping after Solaris, which would have been a far worse way to end it.

Even howlongtobeat puts Xenogears at 56 hours and that website always highballs. It really isn't a game that requires grinding or anything. Most of it's just dialogue.

As for ground, part 2 easily covers half of the major plot points and intrigue. It's just a lot of it isn't even dialog, it's just descriptions of what was supposed to happen.

I like part 2, it has most of the best parts of the plot, but these are just facts here.

I'm at a little over 30 hours at the point where you shut the gates down before going to Solaris. So that seems like about ~40 hours for disc 1 which is the average length for JRPGs on this system in my experience.

Forgot to add, it would be a lot more if I wanted to grind the arena for strong items. But I took a look at that and thought fuck it, I'd have to get good at the arena battles and then it's still 5 hours of grinding minimum even if I don't lose any matches. It's not like grinding the fishing in BoF4 where it's only a matter of time.
I'm kind of tempted to do it, the items are sweet as fuck and the arena is actually one of the cooler parts of the game but I'm just too impatient.

Xenogears is in publishing hell because it was published by Square EA, a brief joint-venture with Squaresoft and EA running from 1998 to 2003.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/games/company/73922-square-ea

Tetsuya Takahashi is too busy with Xenoblade series now to return to Xenogears and give it the remaster treatment it deserves. Even if EA acquiesces, Square would probably be a bitch about it somehow.

It could be the Liverobo from Liveman which has the same animal combination in the exact same places minus a 4th. Dolphin splits into 2 for legs, lion makes the chest lion, bird makes the head. Plus it actually is piloted by a team. It's probably a combination of multiple influences.
