We're back!

This is the thread for discussion of older Visual Novel and Date Sim games (released before 2007-ish). Anything related to visual novel autism, translation patches, recommendations goes here

I like (adult) romance and comedy. Not interested in the other genres. Anything good on the PS1?

I started playing Wonder Project yesterday but I guess it's not really a VN. I do want to finish it first before moving on to other stuff. The translation is so bad but I'm really interested in the plot.

Speaking as someone who went through this methodology I don't 100% support it but I did become literate in Japanese.
In my opinion the Anki decks are quite unnecessary. Mine hit me with words like 二十歳 in my first few days. I finally used that word for the first time in my entire life last week, eight fucking years after I was made to memorize it.
Real experience is better than flashcards in every way. I believe the best thing to do is to head into a VN immediately after learning kana.
That said, everyone learns differently, and I have met people who swear by Anki.

I'll be direct: if you love visual novels, learn Japanese.
Going from translated VNs to raw ones is like going from vitamin gummies to meth.
You think you love visual novels now?
Wait until you spend weeks, months getting to know a heroine, falling head over heels for her, and hearing her tell you in her own voice that she loves you too.
When everything finally clicked for me for the first time I turned into a fucking junkie. I would come home from work and do nothing but read VNs for four hours straight. Not because I was a workaholic, or committed to studying, but because it felt that fucking good.
When it's sweet it's ambrosia, it's eudaimonia. It's the best I've ever felt.
It certainly isn't always that good, and you have to put in a lot of work to get there, but you owe it to yourself to read a VN the real way at least once.

二十歳 just stuck out to me as particularly pissing-in-the-wind useless because of how many conditions have to line up for learning it from a flashcard to be useful.
>A character is being introduced
>They are EXACTLY twenty years old
>They are introducing themselves verbally
>There is no accompanying kanji
>You aren't already familiar with the word anyway
I have only seen this set of conditions line up once ever, and it's the テレクラ minigame in 龍が如く0. You have to select dialogue choices written in katakana, Kiryuu is being asked his age by a potential love interest, he happens to be twenty in that game, and so 二十歳 is written there as ハタチ.
Is a situation like that so common you need that card on day 3 of your deck?
I'd much rather spend all my studying time "in the wild" rather than bashing my head against a brick wall of maybe-perhaps-kinda-useful-someday flashcards.

I'm a proponent of learning japanese through memorizing situational phrases first. Phrases you might encounter in your daily routine and interactions. After you memorize those and common questions/responses THEN learn how all of it is written down.

Anyone's brain is meant to go through that route in formative years. You learn common phrases and prompts then later learn how to write it down. That way it's locked in a different way than by rote memorization of symbols and mental gymnastics about what situations they potentially appear in.

Aniki is the biggest waste of time there is out there, you’re better off reading kids stories and then going from there. Half the time to when you’re reading most of the VN games people play on here (romance and porn) you’re not gonna get a lot of specialized vocabulary that you’d maybe see in other genres like detective and horror games

>> No.9634627

Anki is a really useful tool if you use it for its intended purpose, which is memorizing things that you learned elsewhere. It really does help with retention while you are building up your vocabulary.
Just stay away from pre-made decks, set reasonable limits and understand that it's not a substitute for reading.

>> No.9634649

I don't know how much grammar is ideal.
I just winged it, went in knowing nothing at all, and learned everything through context and experience.
>Hm, words that end in い seem to mostly be adjectives
>I keep seeing お or 御 before words when the speaker is being particularly polite. Is that what those prefixes are implying?
A lot of stuff like that.
Very confusing at the start, but I slogged through it, so it's apparently possible to skip studying grammar and still learn the language.
I would definitely recommend at least skimming this article before jumping into a book; it would probably save you a lot of time.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_grammar

Also, if you want something fun to start out with that's a very low reading level, I enjoy NHK's おはなしのくに.
https://www.nhk.or.jp/school/kokugo/ohanashi/
It's a bunch of live action performances of fairy tales with Japanese subtitles and text you can copy and paste into an electronic dictionary. (If you don't have a good electronic dictionary already, I use Aedict.)
It's an easy place to start, and getting basic knowledge of Japanese fairy tales is pretty useful; they get referenced in all sorts of places.

My teacher spoke zero English and gave me a few pages that were excel spreadsheets organized in a grid. It started with 50 everyday verbs and all their conjugations, and once you get the pattern down for them you can use those same patterns for any new verb since the don’t change, besides maybe 2-3 exceptions. Then there is particle. Problem with that is they all have multiple meanings and uses and you’ll just need to know the a bunch of examples to get the context. Adjectives are easy. Went you get to more complex grammar, adverbs, turns verbs into adjectives and vocabulary versa, that’s not that hard either. Once you get that you’ll be fine for most VN games, basically a middle school level reading. I’d suggest Renko dictionary app for some games because you’re gonna come across some games that like to use archaic kanji to either look smart or save space in a script (when often they are just spelled in kana 95% of the time). Don’t worry about JLPT type stuff because that’s specifically for taking a test and not actually for having an understanding of the language. And most important is always be reading. You have to read. Start with Japanese material made for learners. Then you can move to manga, simple slice of life stuff like Yotsuba or Shinchan is really easy to read. Then go from there. Akagawa Jiro is good for mid tier reading, if you can read his stuff you’re golden for most VN games.

The translation is awful. I also find it to be my least favorite entry out of the Kanno+Umemoto works of Desire, Xenon, Eve: Burst Error and YU-NO. Part of that is likely the bad translation but it's also lacking the meta elements the other games have which I'm a huge sucker for.
>>9616893
The one problem with starting at YU-NO is that it plays a lot smoother if you're already familiar with how to deal with the gameplay of "walk around to different locations until you find the next person to bump into". The amount of people who play it while mindlessly following a walkthrough is despicable.
