>Oi, m8! Welcome to Zniggy! (TM) (C)

It's about time to get working on the much awaited sequel to Zniggy,
Zniggy II: Dungeon Quest.

The original meme might imply that the sequel was also a game for the speccy, but personally I think it would be fun to explore other platforms. The same goes for gameplay, where the meme might imply it was a platformer, but a top-down puzzle solver or rpg could be fun too.

ST was generally weaker than Amiga (except for raw CPU speed which was important mostly for 3D games), so many studios were using ST as a baseline system and developing ports to more powerful system later. My take on Zniggy 2 would be a Wizardry clone for the Spectrum or preferably a computer with better floppy disk support for easier saving/loading. Anons could contribute by creating enemies, adding rooms and shortcuts to the map, or coming up with spells, items, and abilities for classes to use. The classes could be based off of British stereotypes. The game takes place after the first and your goal is to traverse the dungeon to defeat the last living Zniggy.

I contributed a couple of levels and sprites/tiles to the original Zniggy. A dungeon crawler would probably be an ideal format in terms of a relatively low asset/content bar for anons to reach, though it will obviously need an anon with very strong programming skills in whatever engine is chosen if it is to get anywhere. The Speccy had a few dungeon crawlers fwiw

>> No.9614672

Seems like the discussion is converging on a dungeon crawler. Out of all the suggestions I find doing it for the C64 to be the most convenient since there's an llvm backend, thus it could be written in a high level language and should allow simple ports to other 6502 platforms. The assembly code I wrote last time was unmaintainable garbage that made collaboration on the code side of things impossible, so I'd like to avoid assembly this time. I think it's more interesting to do a different platform each Zniggy release for comparison's sake, anyways.
I'll implement whatever designs you guys come up with as long as it's possible to do so.

Might as well make Zniggy 2 for the Commodore 64, it was really popular in the UK, in part for cassette tapes, in part for being generally the best value option, but my main argument is becue the Commodore 64 can actually do Wizardry proper.

>>9616127
Any perspective works, although I'm not personally a fan of top down perspective. Isometric would be hard to collaboratively design for so maybe a first person approach is the way to go, could just make a giant grid that anons can add rooms to.

Personally I think that top-down view would be much easier to execute for others (pixel artists, level designers and such) than the first-person view, although FPP sounds way more exciting.

We could do the Ultima thing where you have a top down overworld and first person dungeons. Sounds like a lot of content would be required though, and the last Zniggy project really slowed down for the last few rooms, as >>9615785 mentions. I think first person might be the easiest since it's just a series of interconnected rooms, and most of those types of games looks like they were designed randomly anyways.
In the end it's first come first serve, whoever has a preference for one should draw an interface for the 320x200 16 color C64 screen, it can be a rough draft without much detail that just splits up the different sections. Could even just sketch it in a minute and hope someone else puts it into the right technical limitations.

I can't remember if he's actually in the final game, but I put an evil yellow Zniggy in the first game who just stands there and does nothing except kill you if you walk into it. The joke in my head was that the "developers" had some elaborate backstory for this character, but it never got written in anything. I thought it would be funny if a sequel ever got made, and it acts like the player is supposed to know who the hell this is. Is mouse support within scope for this project? I'm imagining an interface a bit like Tass Town picrel, goofy pictorial menu for common actions, text box for action readouts/combat info, and the perspective window. imo what would be absolutely kino would be to stay within theme of the original Zniggy in that you start in a park, and then having a smorgasbord collection of shady alleyways, sewers, etc populated with the classic Zniggy enemies we all love, sort of an urban-dungeon thing.

It could work. Zniggy! was a cult classic, but was way over budget for its publisher, so they had to make the sequel for an older platform to market dungeon-crawlers for a new audience (knowing hardcore Zniggy! fans would buy more hardware just to play their next masterpiece). well, it's something...
but the tooling for maps and tilesets are all over the place.
half the shit just doesn't work or works rather poorly, so it's a major pain in the ass to convert images to tilesets, and save tilemaps
at least we can include binary files rather easily with gbdk (although the analyzer spits errors left and right) and write the game in C (which will make the game extra janky free of charge since it will probably be very inefficient and slow).

i think we might need to write our own little python scripts or find some sane mapping tool that can
1. import plain png as tilesets using only 4 colors
2. export & import binary tilemaps and tileset tile data (laid out as in gameboy format)

3 (optional): write some C header with map width and height, tileset name and map name and so on. (we will probabyl have to make this ourselves).
