Who thought it was a good idea making Richter Belmont look like a Ryu from Street Fighter clone?

1993 was probably the pinnacle of shonen hype. They were just reflecting what was popular.

I always thought it was weird.

Because someone thought it was a genuinely good idea. This is peak Richter design, anyone that prefers the long-hair fop version is wrong.

The executable file for the game I pirated like a decade ago was named Blue Ryu vs Darkstalkers

>> No.9605716

It was the first Castlevania game to advance the timeline since Simon's Quest. They probably wanted a fresh, new look for this "Dracula X" era. Also >>9605647 .

Shame that Richter never got to star in a sequel to Rondo, though. He got kinda shafted when The Bloodletting was cancelled.

I just hate the shitty jump animation he has.

I'll admit the design looks good but I still prefer hot blooded battle-maniac Richter. It makes for good variety compared to the rest of the Belmont clan too.

True. Actually, it's a shame we never got a Kojima interpretation of Rondo style Richter, wearing that kind of getup, and with the short hair and bandana.

Not to mention other Konami-games and more on PC-Engine were going in with the anime aesthetic at the time

Also can we talk about Maria Renard? She sticks out even more as the quintessential 90s' anime heroine, at least SOTN got her back on gothic horror style

Neither does Dracula's if you look closely enough. That's Rondo Dracula there, not Symphony Dracula. Richter's portrait only matches when you meet him briefly in the Colisseum, and Dracula's portrait only matches during the true final boss battle. Richter is a bit weirder because unlike every other character he has TWO portraits - Normal and Shafted - which would've been a simple fix it they'd used both designs there, so that makes me think the Rondo sprites were placeholders that they simply didn't have time to redraw like the pause menu.

I mean, to be fair it worked, didn't it? All of the other Belmonts literally look the same. The only other ones you can remember are Trevor and Simon most likely. And Trevor most recently because of the Netflix anime. Richter Belmont is pretty much the only Belmont other than Simon that players can remember.

Better than the 3D remake designs. Richter and Maria were supposedly redesigned there because of limitations with realistic headband and dress physics but those firmly belong in the dustbin of gaming history. I kinda like Richter's Symphony artwork though, shame that design hardly got utilized.
>>9607002
>so that makes me think the Rondo sprites were placeholders that they simply didn't have time to redraw like the pause menu.
I assume you mean the Richter sprites past the intro, but would it be too much to give the Rondo scene its own set of younger portraits too?

Christopher was always intended to be Simon's ancestor. He's explicitly name-dropped in the original Japanese manual as the Belmont that destroyed Dracula many years ago. Supposedly (not -100%- confirmed last I checked but anecdotally), the reason Trevor's name is Ralph C. in Japan is because it's a remnant of when Castlevania III was going to detail Christopher's story, but then a Game Boy game beat them to it and they could no longer do that reveal. I think the question of whether The Adventure or III took place first was put off for a while until Konami started sharing the series timeline publicly, and they decided on III being first and I guess implied that Christopher took after Ralph/Trevor's middle name.

>> No.9608903

>>9607395
That was Trevor's original name. Evidenced by his "C" initial. Both games were being developed at the same time but took different directions, with Trevor being renamed Ralph C. and the protagonist of Adventure remaining Christopher.

Can't remember where, maybe official timeline stuff but I'm pretty sure Christopher/Soleil are Simons descendants. I'll have to take a look at the manuals and see if there's any info in there
