Inherently it's just another competitive category, and at one point, back in the early days of SDA and Twin Galaxies, it was little more than that. You just submitted a run, had it judged, and your time and video posted (no video in the case of TG though). Is it autistic? Yes, but no more than the other competitive categories like high score and 1-cc runs. Problem is with the advent of GDQ and Twitch streaming, the autism is on full display for all to see. These people are personalities now, many of them highly autistic and/or mentally ill, and it's ugly. But it doesn't impact me at all, and it's still pretty amazing to see how some of these games can be broken. The only annoying thing is many modern runs now cannot be enjoyed on their own and you are forced to look at some faggot on his Twitch stream alongside his work.
