finally a Marvel NES game that's actually somewhat ok despite the obvious stealing from Sunsoft Batman

isn't this Britjank or something? i agree about the similarities to Batman.

I've played both of them before, though I struggle to find too many similarities, what did it steal from Sunsoft's Batman exactly?

The city. Wall-crawler stole the entire Gotham from Batman and gave the keys from it to his six minions. Are you bad enough dude to rescue everyone?

I have to say, sometimes it feels like I'm the only one that cares at all about Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six (1992/NES) as it rarely gets mentioned and, when it does, it's usually to use it as an example of subpar Spider-Man video games. I'm not going to pretend that I don't know why that's the case, the control is somewhat awkward, though nothing one can't get used to with time, and it's clunky for 1992 standards, even though most of the NES library is clunky too, but the main issue that it had, which was common back then, is that it felt like a video game with Spider-Man in it, instead of a Spider-Man video game. Also, it takes only 15min to complete it, and the level design really nosedives in its 2nd half, not only that, but the OST literally has 2 tracks, graphics aren't that good for a 1992 NES release, and the story/presentation are barely there... still, it plays fine and once you get used to it, it can be fun, especially in the 1st half where level design is interesting too, more vertical and with items to collect. I also love how enemies explode when defeated, sound effects are satisfying. I still have a lot of nostalgia for this.

>Also, it takes only 15min to complete it, and
if you're watching TAS videos it is, realistically something a bit more than an hour to beat. While not one of the harder NES games, it's also not a cakewalk the way something like Wacky Races is.

The Spiderman game on DOS and Amiga was much shittier than this.

Oh, I apologize, the way I said it in my post really wasn't ideal, what I meant to say was that, once you know all of the proper strategies for getting past everything safely, it's a 15min run to complete it, which is probably why you only have 1 life and 1 continue, 2 lives pretty much, since using the continue takes you back to the last checkpoint instead of the start of the level, well, getting back to what I was saying, they saw that it was too short and padded it out by giving you few tries and some cheap moments, to beat it for the 1st time it'll take a while, lots of trial and error with you getting sent back to the title screen often, but when you figure out a strategy for each and every one of the cheaper parts of the levels, it's quite short. What gave me the most trouble were the bosses, the cheap enemy that can take all of your health quickly in Mysterio's level and the main enemy in Hobgoblin's level, but eventually I figured out the best strategy for all of them. One thing that helps is knowing when to hold the punch button to do more damage, like in Sandman's boss fight, or just tapping it, in Mysterio's boss fight.

it's kind of the predecessor to the far better-known Maximum Carnage

>> No.9581067

>>9581057
I don't know... they feel way too different for me to see it like that, as Maximum Carnage is a classic Beat 'em Up through and through, while this plays more like and Action/Adventure Platform sort of thing to me, the level design and controls feel way too different for me to see this relation.

Although there's no evidence, I suspect that this game was originally developed as some different IP and later modded into Spider-Man game to sell better.

There is kinda lot of elements that seem like they belong to fantasy/horror theme, like that stage in the dark where you fight zombie-like enemies with sickles, woods stage with axe-throwing guys and last stage which takes place a castle (why the fuck Doc Ock resides in a castle with his portraits on the walls? was that in the comic?)

>> No.9581120

>>9581107
I don't doubt that it could've been the case, but the evidence you've suggested can be explained really.

>that stage in the dark where you fight zombie-like enemies with sickles
It can be excused by it being Mysterio's level, a villain that's all about illusions, who worked in films before being a villain.

>woods stage with axe-throwing guys
According to the manual they're trolls that throw clubs... so it is indeed odd for Spider-Man, but I believe the woods might be an attempt at Central Park or something.

>last stage which takes place a castle (why the fuck Doc Ock resides in a castle with his portraits on the walls? was that in the comic?)
In the 1st ever comic with the Sinister Six, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, Doc Ock has a castle, and it's where he fights Spider-Man, as odd as that may sound it really did happen.

Whenever people talk about Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six, it's always about the more well known NES version, but has anyone here ever played the SEGA versions? It came out on both the Master System and the Game Gear, but they're both identical apart from the screen resolution, which makes the Master System version more playable I suppose, since you can see more. I've played these out of curiosity, because I grew up playing the NES version and was hopeful that the SEGA versions could be even better... and it was disappointing. One thing I was sure of is that the graphics would be better, and at first it seems like it, more colors and all, but a lot of the atmosphere is gone due to some new colors, especially in Sandman's level. Spider-Man still doesn't control well, sometimes you want to punch and he just... doesn't do it, also the jump kick has no forward jump anymore, which makes it useless. Also, the enemies feel a lot more like a 2nd player, especially the ones that shoot, which can feel cheap, I don't really enjoy playing it as much as the NES one...

I just got one of these in the mail today and took it for a spin. Come on, you guys lied. The stick isn't as bad as I'd heard and it makes certain games like Chubby Cherub much, much easier. I still say the normal NES pads are better for platformers though.

I used to prefer the genesis one as that's the one I grew up with but I now realize after playing through the sega cd version that it is better. The only thing it's missing is the photography and Spider-Man has a goofy web-slinging pose compared to the genesis one which looks like a comic pose. But that stuff is very minor.

I really like the extra bosses the cd version has even if they are incredibly easy. It's nice to see Bullseye and Typhoid Mary bodyguarding for Kingpin.

I might be alone in this, but after playing all versions of Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin, I still prefer it on Genesis, while I do enjoy the open New York in the CD version, and the introduction of animated cutscenes and comic book collecting, aswell as the polished mobility in wall crawling, to me the Genesis is still better. I feel that the narrative is deeper, especially in Spider-Man's thought process for going after Electro in the power station, and of how he finds Kingpin's base. Also, passwords on the CD version don't save your comic books, you have to collect them all in one go and still risk getting the bad ending... I also prefer the sound on Genesis, especially for punching, and like you've said the websliging pose and photography aspect, which ties it up with Peter Parker's life. I just find it to be a more compact and polished experience, while the CD one feels like it has a lot of filler to me, also not as atmospheric.

Genesis version feels more like an arcade game while CD has all this extra stuff like comic collecting and pinball minigames which I didn't even bother with and of course animated cutscenes that feel like an unaired saturday morning cartoon.

I did a playthrough of Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six (1992/NES) and recorded it on FCEUX, sped it up by 1,25x on Clideo to run on Streamable: https://streamable.com/ws15yl
Level 1: Save your webbing for Electro, if you collect both web cartridges then there should be about 20 shots of your impact webbing to use against him, and this way he'll go down quickly.
Level 2: Don't bother much with getting webbing, Sandman's most vulnerable to punching, but not just any punches, longer ones, don't tap the button, hold it and it should take him down.
Level 3: You have a single enemy that can give you trouble, but webbing is your friend here, also making a specific one disappear is helpful, while Mysterio goes down with quick punches.
Level 4: Do your best to stay high up to avoid Vulture's bombs, also to take him down do long punches just like against Sandman, and jump right after it so he can't hit you when flying by.
Level 5: Jump over the enemies and duck right after it to dodge the projectile, with Hobgoblin it's best to make him go off screen so that his pattern resets and you can land some easy hits.
Level 6: All of the enemies here are rehashed, so just use the strategies you've used against them so far, or jump over them, while Doc Ock goes down by hitting him while ducking near by.

Spider-Man has an excellent library on handheld consoles really, from the get go things were already promising, with Rare's The Amazing Spider-Man (1990/GB) being quite decent and to me a much better attempt at a Spider-Man video game than anything made before it. I'll agree with you that it was in the GBA where things got really good though, my personal favorite has to be Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace (2001/GBA) by far, though I might be biased, since the main reason I got into this one was because it's the sequel to Spider-Man's PS1 duology, with the classic original made by Neversoft, and the sequel made by Vicarious Visions, which also worked on this GBA sequel, on the very same year too, maybe it's not really a sequel, but more of a spin-off, I'm not sure, either way it's clearly meant to be in the same series, when looking at both the HUD/GUI and overall mechanics, it's all taken from that duology I just mentioned, its main differences being that it's non-linear and you can find upgrades by exploring all levels, which are neat additions to be fair, though it being 2D does make it more limited in how it plays.
