i've recently tried a modern Persona game, it's interesting, I like how it plays. Figured it would be worth checking out how Atlus came about and check out some of their older titles. what do you guys think? it seems there are a few ports of the Megami Tensei series, what's the consensus on all these titles, or rather, which ones do you enjoy? thanks.

>> No.9576689

None of their games are shit but none are nearly as good as people like to pretend

>> No.9576690

i've also read that Jack Bros was one of the better Virtual Boy titles, through truthfully i've never played or emulated Virtual Boy games

Try:
Gold Grand Slam
Run Saber
Groove On Fight
Purikura Daisakusen
Spuds Adventure
Rockin Kats
Amazing Tater
Somer Assault
Dark Messiah
Snowboard Kids Plus (PS)
Despiria

>> No.9576830

Somer Assault is fun
SNES Shin Megami Tensei games are very worth playing
We're waiting for Princess Crown to be translated
Maken X is interesting
Erika & Satoru is a good Famicom adventure game if you like that stuff
Xexyz is jank, do not play
Radiant Historia is a DS game but it is one of their best non-SMT games

>> No.9576839

There is a new fan translation for SMT1 on the PS1 that makes it the best way to play that game
SMT1 is pretty merciless tho, Persona has long been its more approachable sister series

the snes titles were the ones that jumped out to me as "probably worth playing"

Currently playing Megami Tensei. I already played the 2nd one before so I'm in somewhat known territory. I'm enjoying it, just beat Medusa and now I'm exploring the lower side of Valhalla path. So far difficulty hasn't been as burtal as people make it out to be. Only if you accidentally step into the wrong area too soon will you get absolutely wrecked. Though I miss the additions that the sequel had.

Anyway for 1987 the game is amazing, it's massive and the presentation is excellent.

Megami Tensei II on the Famicom is the best RPG on the system.

MT is Wizardry-tier brutal and uses password saves, but is very fucking cool for the time, MTII is just a masterpiece.

Is there any point to playing the NES games instead of the remake Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei on the SNES?

The remake of 2 looks and sounds like complete shit in comparison to the original

The remake of II is total garbage as >>9576927 says. The remake of I has a lot of quality of life improvements and is generally a lot more forgiving.

If you haven't played them, I recommend Persona 2 Innocent sin and eternal punishment. I'm planning on replaying IS on my vita and play EP for the first time once I get a new vita charger and a SD2vita.

are you aware of how much persona sells nowadays? These games are piss fucking easy now too, the days of FATLUS being the core audiences were 10+ years ago

If you want to experience "old Atlus" then I will have to recommend you play minimum Shin Megami Tensei I or II it doesn't really matter which. THEN you play SMT If, then Persona 1, then Persona Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment. You don't need to play past that point to get how much Atlus has changed from there. I'd only recomend Noctourne if I'm reasonably sure you don't have a potatoe.

Damn I really wish MT came out in the west back then. Playing through it gives me a bizarre sense of nostalgia that I can't explain despite never playing it as a kid, similar to when I played games I actually had such as Shadowgate, Adventures of Lolo, Castlevania, and Final Fantasy. I'm sure I'd really love this game when I was young.

I also did this. Played persona 4 and decided to go back to the beginning and see how it alll started.

The nes games were ok but very difficult and smt if..... was good but the rest was absolute slogs that i gave up on before finishing

I remember utterly giving up on Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment because when some NPC told me to go search for something and I knew I had to sit through 50 random encounters that happened every 10 feet I was about to kill myself.

If they did you won't notice because the translation patch is just the SNES translation ported over.
