Unironically who would think to make a Spongebob game a point and click adventure, let alone make an entire series of games exclusive to PC. It probably could have handled a 3D platformer, Morrowind came out the year this did, but they actively made the choice to make it this way. Bizarre.

I actually own this game, it's probably the single Spongebob-related item I have. Got it as a kid in the early 2000's. Anyway, my favorite licensed game is probably pic related, followed by Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin and The Grinch for GBC.

This post implies that I think Morrowind is a platformer, I meant that PC games at this point in time were more than capable of handling that kind of game. Morrowind was a weird example.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it probably would have been easier to make a generic platformer. If you played the game, they clearly cared about both the project and the series. This carried over to Battle for Bikini Bottom though, which is what I was thinking about when talking about it being a platformer.

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin was probably the 1st video game to do the character justice, and for that it deserves a lot of credit. Apparently 2/3 of Genesis owners had this at some point, it was a system seller for SOA, following their strategy of acquiring popular IPs to rival what Nintendo had to offer, before Sonic came along at least. I think this was the 1st time where Peter Parker was somewhat incorporated into the mechanics, with the photographs that make you money so you can affort to make your web fluid, it adds depth in both the lore and gameplay, so it's really a quite welcome feature. Another thing that this did, that the previous Spider-Man adaptations didn't, was having an actual story that develops as it goes along, instead of some text in the manual or an opening cutscene to set the plot, you have cutscenes between all levels that show Spider-Man's thought process as to where he should go next to find the keys to disarm Kingpin's bomb and it's great to see, it's immersive and captures the feeling of reading a comic book more than anything that came before it. One more thing I love, that few Spider-Man video games did as well as this one, was the atmosphere, it feels dark, not too dark or edgy, nothing like that, but serious and grim, you feel the stakes through the music and graphics.

At that point I think it's best to create a new board, that way we'll have one for the 6th and 7th console generations, while having another to cover everything up to the 5th, like /vr/ used to be.

>> No.9578083 [DELETED]

>>9576194
We need to have /vr/ for all of the "retro" discussion in the future, and something like /vintage/ so that all of the Atari 2600, NES, Master System, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Gear, Super Nintend, Mega Drive, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Saturn and Dreamcast discussion isn't overshadowed and pushed to the side.

I think retro is basically defined as "older than 20 years but not older than 40", but clearly this board doesn't really adhere to that since we can talk about games likes Pong just fine

But yeah, the biggest and most obvious game design revolution besides 3D took place in the late 90s and early 2000s, since then a lot of things got standardized and exceedingly formulaic with today's games really just being pure crash grabs. There is hardly a difference between PS3 games and PS4 games in terms of game design so demarcations would lose all meaning if we allowed even newer consoles than we do right now

The way it is right now makes the most sense probably for the next 30 years. If the word "retro" becomes an issue to people, then literally just rename the board

>having a box art in the USA wherein the main character is clearly giving you the satanic horns symbol

Most parents of the time would not have known how innocuous the "spidey palm thing" was and would have immediately associated the gesture with satan, it makes sense to clean it up a little from a marketing standpoint ESPECIALLY for North America, even though even Japan and Europe got the same art.
Remember this was quite a few years before the Raimi blockbuster films and the finer knowledge of little things like exactly how Spiderman's web slinging works was in the realm of loser nerds who read comics.

On a similar note I had to convince a friend that Spiderman originally used mechanical webslings with fluid that Parker had to manufacture himself and that the organic web shit was made up for the movies, he swore black and blue that Peter Parker canonically always shot web out of his wrists like jism.
