9574360 No.9574360 [Reply] [Original]

Looking for games that have this "retrofuture"/Designer's Republic/90's cyberpunk aesthetics, like in picrelated.
You could also include games like Mega Man Legends, Einhander, Gungage, and Sin and Punishment for their cyberpunk aesthetics: games along that line
Also anything goes in terms of era or system, so long as it's generally close to the aesthetic.

Please, post anything remotely close that might scratch the itch

Front Mission 3. Everything from the Wanzers (the mecha) designs to the "Internet" system you browse in-between the missions. You can visit links, download files, use various tools like an archive unpacker, image processing apps etc. It's not really quite on Uplink level, but FM3 kinda managed to get a "feel" of the old Internet, forums and all that jazz too. It also looks very futuristic (for the time) and it's mad fun. Seriously, try it.

MML is nothing like those.

You're looking for late 90s games with a sci-fi setting, that's all you have to say.

No, I must insist on disagreeing.
The color palette used in MML1 and some of the design work is closer to what I'm specifically after than, say, Star Wars Rogue Squadron or R Type Delta

Regardless, I see aesthetic overlap between the UI, color palettes, and the "retrofuture" "cyberpunk" subject matter of both games.

Really the labels and how you choose to divide all of this up doesn't matter, but I chose those two as examples because I see them as similar and they are the closest to the aesthetic I'm looking for.

For those that don't know Designer's Republic
DR was a design group active in the 90's and early 00's that did a bunch of album covers and the UI and lots of graphical elements for the Wipeout series. Picrel.

I'd describe their style as futuristic and easy on the eyes.

The cover for Hardwar was literally designed by them, so should go in. I think a lot of the other games listed in OP don't really fit, the whole point is their design work was distinctive and not like what was seen in most videogames. Otherwise you just get anything "futuristic" suggested.

Looking up footage, both AC 1 and 2 are very in line with what I'm looking for. The UI particularly is very clean.

Looking up gameplay it's not quite grabbing me, but I need to comment on the fact that the in-game character models are very appealing to look at.

Yes, Silent Bomber looks great. I had knocked R-Type Delta previously in the thread, but it might actually be a different game I was thinking of: looking up footage it looks pretty in line.

I think that's the point of this thread desu: while DR was very distinctive, there are a handful of games that scratch the same itch for me.
Going to add that the Homeworld games are very closely adjacent to the aesthetic.

More people on /vr/ should give it a try. Has one of the best senses of humor in any game I've ever played. It does that thing where it tricks you into not taking it too seriously, and then makes you feel real things when it suddenly changes pace on you. Great game.

>even though it takes place inside a fantasy mmo
The fact that it takes place in an MMO is definitely in line with the aesthetic, on some level.

It's not so much about the content: Designer's Republic handled most of the UI elements of the Wipeout games.
So when I say anything goes, the game could be about anything, it could be about pirates as long as it's got a clean graphic design touch.
With .hack//infection, it looks like the content of the game, the fantasy MMO stuff is definitely in line with what I'm looking for, but the UI elements are less so

I want to bring attention to artist/designer/graphic designer Ron Cobb who is an under-sung member of the production team on Alien. Obviously everyone talks about Giger. Ron Cobb designed the Nostromo exterior, its interiors and did some very nice icon/logo work used throughout the Nostromo sets. He's half the reason Alien is as iconic as it is.

I know this style, was into /gd/ for some time, but I don't know that many games that used it.
In fact, I think Designer's Republic "invented" it, or more like made it out of '60s-'70s modernism (see guys like Wim Crouwel / Josef Müller-Brockmann) blended with postmodern chaos / complexity / brightness, as well as then-new technology like Photoshop and vector graphics.
gonna post some stuff from that decade in that vein.
