A few months ago I got an Anbernic handheld and I love replaying my favorite games and finding new gems. Then I figured, why not play them on my TV instead?

So I'm looking for a retro console. Ideally something that boots into an emulator or has the option to (instead of having to go through a windows/android OS). The perfect console for me would be able to emulate everything up to and including Playstation 2.

Any recommendations? Anyone with a similar setup?

(Pic related, but looking for something more powerful/high quality)

I used a modded PS1 Classic for a few years. Something like the Super Console X doesn't seem bad, but from what I've heard the temperatures get high after a little bit of use.

I just use my Steam Deck now, and when I want to play on my TV, I connect it to a USB C hub.

I just use pic related for everything, runs everything up to Dreamcast and PSP for only $15 from Walmart. You won't be getting any Saturn, GameCube, or PS2 out of it though, and you'll still have to install and setup RetroArch, though that's barely a big deal imo. For external storage you just need a two-way OTG cable and a USB drive,

Nvidia Shield is supposed to be really good if you want to run those higher end (sixth gen) consoles. There's also the Beelink GT King/Pro for around the same price. For lower end consoles you could also just buy a TV with Android or Fire TV built in and get RetroArch running in no time, no box necessary. I did this downstairs and it works great.

if you don't want Windows or Android, you could try a mini PC with Batocera OS. Retro Game Corps has a lot of videos showing that off, and a spreadsheet comparing mini PCs. 4chan's retarded anti-spam filter won't let me link the spreadsheet but it's in the description of this video

you could also use a normal PC or laptop obviously, or a Steam Deck with a dock. or possibly an Xbox Series S|X, I heard PCSX2 was released on it recently.
it is also possible to make Windows boot straight into a frontend like Playnite or Steam, Idk how but some Windows Steam Deck users were doing that

yeah but how LONG
how long does he play?
just because you CAN run a 5th gen system doesn't mean your thermals can keep pace
playing saturn for 5 minutes is not the same thing as playing for 1hour and 50 minutes

my pi3 suffers the same problem even with the fan\heatsink\etc
after less than 40 minutes its basically throwing in the towel
throttles & shows ugly temp warning icon

yeah, this is why I feel the best option for this is literally just a normal gaming PC as a "console". even if it's huge, at least you get good cooling. and as a bonus you can go further and emulate up to Switch/Wii U/PS3/360, and also play PC games, as long as they're couch-and-controller friendly. and also use it as a general HTPC.
I saw a video of a guy talking about this setup, he has Windows boot straight into Kodi/Playnite and swaps between them

...or if you don't want to deal with all that, just run Batocera instead of Windows

>how long does he play?
he goes into that sort of technical detail too in a lot of his reviews and tear downs. I have seen a few videos where he gives some recommendations about cooling or expanding a systems capabilities. He reviews emuboxes, but also small form factor pcs or anything else that can play emulated video games
