Let's talk about retro superhero games.

Before we had our Spider-Man 2s and our Bam Hams that really perfected the superhero game in most people's eyes, we had a selection that generally ranged from pretty good (Adventures of Batman & Robin on SNES, as one example) to horrendous (Superman on N64). There was also the occasional really great game, but they were few and far between.

What are some superhero games that you feel are great, or overlooked? Let's just discuss them as a whole, we could call this a superhero game general, if you prefer.

Spider-Man for the PS1/N64/Dreamcast is pretty good.

>> No.957165

Batman NES
Batman Returns
Captain America and the Avengers

The last is probably the most overlooked. It's a legit game.

Not really. It's better than most superhero games, but it's still not very good.

I've only somewhat recently learned of this game's existence - it was released rather late in the SNES's lifespan. Has anyone played it?

A minute of google says it's meh at worst and alright at best. Apparently has a somewhat elaborate combo system.

It was terrible actually, and quite frustrating to play.

Capcom's X-men game turned out to be much better. I love how you have to reunite the characters at the beggining by playing a stage for each of 'em.

I just remember this game being really hard. That or I was really fucking terrible at it.
The genesis x-men games were also okay.

>Captain America and the Avengers

Which one? The NES is rather overlooked and pretty good although it's very redundant with "artificial length" due to having to replay several stages if one of your character dies

which batman returns too?
Batman Returns on NES is a whole different game than on SNES. Obviously the SNES one is the best but the NES one is pretty good too even though it gets really hard starting stage 2! I just wish both games had co-op

Use Nightcrawler, and just sit in teleport mode. He'll swing, miss, get hit, and you can just sit while the cycle repeats.

I feel the first Spider-Man game for Genesis didn't get enough love. The way they incorporated the fact that Spidey's gotta pay the bills by taking pictures was amusing.

Speaking of Spider-Man, what about the Spidey and friends arcade game that had you play as Spidey, Namor, Hawkeye and Black Cat? Now THERE was an eclectic cast(maybe not Cat, but the other two...)!

It's basically Mutant Apocalypse if they used the Avengers instead and also didn't give a good god damn. Maybe I just suck at it, but I'm good at Mutant Apocalypse, and War for the Gems feels really awkward and hard for all the wrong reasons. Half of the enemies are just palette swaps. Some common enemies are palette swaps of characters you use in the game. Pic related.

Most of my favorites have been mentioned. I've had this since I was like five and never beat more than a level or two. Is it worth playing further? Also, is it balls hard, or do I just suck?

Batman Returns on Super Nintendo was one hell of a beat 'em up. I grew to be crazy difficult late in the game, but the early stages are still incredibly fun. I love smashing the clowns through the windows and fences in the backgrounds.
