hats off for trying but it was clearly not ready, neither the engine nor the console. Funny to think that as a 3D remake of Hydlide it's not horrible, but it's also incredibly off the mark. Immercenary on 3DO achieves the 3D open world action game much better, and then obviously everyone does that now in the modern games, but because the hardware and programming tricks have caught up to it. Virtual Hydlide in its time of release would have maybe been okay on 3DO or even PSX with more compromises, or would have probably run acceptably well on 64, but on Saturn it was just too much. It's unfortunate that T&E had such bad luck choosing platforms to work on in the 90's.

And no, please don’t look at this as an opportunity to post Skyrim, Mordor, or Souls bullshit or any other 80+ hour ‘tism sim.

I mean a simple old school action RPG that was transplanted into a 3D world with the camera locked behind the player. I don’t care if it looks just as ass, smooth gameplay is more important.

OOT:

>Graphics designed for babies
>Super linear
>Easy, aimed at children

Virtual Hydlide:

>Nonlinear, randomly generated world
>Photorealistic character models
>Difficult, designed for adults

Reminder the original Hydlide came before Zelda. Zelda is just a dumbed down clone really.

>> No.9556923

>>9556797
Are the graphics in OOT for babies because there are more bright colors? I don’t get that one. I think both games are relatively easy but OOT has much less slowdown, graphical problems etc. Its just a well made, solid game comparatively speaking. I guess if nonlinearity is really what you’re looking for Virtua Hydlide wins hands down. Theres only like 2 or 3 dungeons you can do out of order in OOT. I think the saturn had good action RPGs like Shining Wisdom, Legend of Oasis 2, Magic Knight Rayearth and of course SOTN, but only 2d.

Not a single digitized pictures game ever held up well, and not just visually but gameplay wise, the best were the early MK games but even they succeeded out of pure novelty with the look and fatalities, no one would pick them over the many vastly superior fighting games of the era today though.
Same with fmv games, pure novelty was the game and they traded presentation, which looks like ridiculous shit now so it fails on the only strength it ever had, for any sense of real gameplay or enjoyment, the best you can get out of them is some humor, intentional or unintentional.
Left behind in the trash bin of history very quickly, good riddance.

its probably because digitized characters step into an uncanny valley of poor animation.

cartoon characters get much more tolerance for inaccurate motion and proportions.

people expect to see weight in motions that the actors had to pose standing still for each frame or without the speed/intensity of the recorded motion actually portrayed in the game.

Live action anything in a videogame whether it be some shitty digitized sprite or full motion video cutscenes with actors just destroy the immersion and cheapen the feel of the game for me.
