Im usually a completionist but the donkey kong country series is much more fun to just beat normally

>> No.9552806

No, no it isn't. 100%ing these games is awesome.

Unironically how do you do it? Do you read a guide? I feel like so many of the secrets are pure trial and error

>> No.9552817

>>9552812
The first one is the only one that a guide is necessary. I 100%'d all 3 when I was a kid. Sure I looked up a few things years later when I didn't remember, but I actually got it done simply exploring enough. The only thing I didn't know about was the bonus room inside another bonus room for the 101% in the first game.

I dont think any platformer is fun to 100 percent.

Honestly there is no wrong way to play the DKC games, I've seen plenty of Any% runs on Twitch that use the warp barrels and other warps for a quick and easy clear, but there's also a nice rewarding feeling to completing the games all the way through, just takes a bit of patience, but finding all of the secrets can be a very fun experience.

>>9552812
Back then GameFAQs, nowadays you can just YouTube it. Some of the stuff is really well-hidden like the notorious three bonus stages in Orangutan Gang, the bonus stage within a bonus stage in Oil Drum Alley, and one of the DK Coins in one of the castle stages in DKC2 iirc that most would never guess (hidden behind a wall), but a lot of them you can just find on your own.

Cape fly for most of the game is boring.

There really aren't THAT many levels where this is viable.

All games are more fun to complete normally.
If that wasn't the case, then 100%ing it would have been considered "completing it normally".

2 is the middleground, its worth doing a 102% run, dkc1 is the one you are just satisfied finishing it, the only change in ending is literally dialogie wise, thats it, dkc3 is the one that feels like a chore.

Strange, to me dkc (especially 2) was the gold standard for making a game fun to 100%. All the collectibles are placed is a neat path and flow with the fastest route through a level. I like the returns game but too often the answer is 'go left for secret'. If I had to nominate a game for being less fun to 100% I'd say yoshis island. Its astonishing how anti fun trying to fully clear even a single levels is compared to the base game. Who wants to run a level multiple times just because you missed a single slightly different coloured coin? Or because you got hit once trying to grab that coin? Or because you missed the window to grab it? God its so awful.

Sonic 1 and Sonic CD, sure. 2 and 3/K I usually just ignore the Special Stages (or intentionally avoid them in some cases).

>>9553989
I agree so much with yoshis island
But playing the game any% is way too easy as well

>> No.9554182

It's too bad that 2 and 3 hide meaningful parts of the game behind the completionist wall. 1 is pretty pointless, since the mini games are dull, and if you have the willpower to go through every one of them, you've probably played the game enough to not need a huge amount of extra lives.

>> No.9554367

>>9554182
is it really bad that there are good rewards for dedicated players? Sure, there are some people that react to that by saying UGH NOW I AM *FORCED* TO 100% THIS GAME, but do those people really have opinions that matter when nobody has forced them to do anything?

>> No.9554383

>>9554367
true
its only a problem if 100% is required like in rayman 1

>> No.9556039

you didn't 100% DKC3 as a kid.

>> No.9557469

>>9556039
What do you consider the cutoff for being a kid? I did everything in DKC3 but beat K. Rool for the final time when I was in middle school. I never actually did beat the last K. Rool, either.

DKC2 was fine, but those Simon things to get the Banana Birds in DKC3 were boring, and would get a bit aggravating when they approached maximum length (unless you were a cheater and wrote it down)

>> No.9558065

The only bullshit thing about two is that they put one of the Kremlin coins in a bonus room only once in the game. It's the skull coaster one. No other Kremlin coin is like that and it took me forever to find it.
Maybe Cranky gives a hint about it but I don't remember.

>> No.9558982

>>9552812
It's fairly easy, in the level name, a "!" appearing means all secrets has been found. In the later games, there's also the DK coin icon appearing there
For the first game, I believe there's 0 indication for the bullshit 101% extra bonus in a bonus, but it does nothing, and getting 100% only gives you one sentence by Cranky in the end
100% (102% and 103%) is less obscure and easier to obtain in the two sequels and ultimately you play a bonus world with a new final boss
DKC3 has 105% or something if you play with the hard mode cheat and beat it under 3 hours, but again, you only get prompt from Cranky for it

>> No.9559003

>>9558982
DKC has some of the more hidden secrets. Sometimes they're hinted at by a random suspicious banana, other times you have to misfire the barrel, but the "!" indicator should at least let you know where to look
DKC3 has probably some of the most involved secrets to get to. Listen to the bears for some hints too
DKC2 should be generally no problems
