I have a Retroid Pocket 3 on the way. I know, the + just came around but I'm mostly using mine for moonlight anyway.
I do have a Vita and a 3DS but they're above and away less acceptable from a performance standpoint for /vr/

Basically the Analogue Pocket. Uses FPGA tech to re-create platforms down to the circuits.

But there's a limit to current cheap FPGA tech. Saturn / PS1. At least with MiSTer. Not sure how the FPGA chip in the Analogue pocket measures up.

I know it's not a retro console so pardon me, but I was looking into the N2DS XL to act as a practical emulation machine with a huge library since it runs GBA and DS games natively but then I saw the price they're still selling this thing at. Not to mention there's barely any stock left anywhere.

Hey lads I want to buy an emulator handheld that plays up to 16bit stuff flawlessly and ideally gba and ps1 stuff. Miyoo mini looks great for the price, any reasons not to get it? Hold the start+select button while launching a DS game on your N3DS XL. This will disable the upscaling and result in a small but unfiltered image. That's how DS games will look on your DSi.

Gonna be honest bros, I've had RG351P, RG351V and RG353P, yet, I still like the 351P the best, hell, I would even put it above my VITA and N2DS.

There's something just right about the balance between size, shape and weight that makes it extremely comfortable to use. I really wish they did an updated model using the same shell, because as much as I like it I gotta admit the shoulder buttons suck and are unreliable, got the 353P hoping it would be the successor I was waiting for, but while the extra power and 4:3 screen are nice, the awkward bigger rounded shape just makes it not as comfortable to hold, also, the D-Pad SUCKS (unless mine happened to be defective). Never tried the M series, but I feel the metal weight would just mess with the delicate balance, and I also don't like the idea of the thing acting as a heatsink when I'm playing it.

I particularly like to play GB/GBC on it since it pre-loads the DMG bezel and I think actual screen size is similar to that of the real thing, which is a good thing because the higher you scale those graphics on bigger screens, the uglier they look.

Probably picking my FF1 DoS playthrough back up, also D2 on Switch. Finished my first playthrough of Sapphire version in December and I'm fucking relieved it's done and over with. I swear I spent 10+ hours just leveling my team once I made it to the Elite 4. I bought some new GBA games in the meanwhile that I'll get to work on this year. I also plan on beating Front Mission on my DS this year, if that counts since it's a port of a SNES game.

got a trimui smart incoming bros, what am I in for?

Almost one week with the RG351v (ARKos). Thoughts so far:

- Battery reading is pretty inaccurate. Sometimes you turn it off, turn it on and the next time the percentage is a 1% higher

- Battery + built in wifi = bad: If you are going to download thumbnails / boxart or update cores / assets, do it while connected to the DC and disable wifi immediately after. It sucked a 30% just doing that.

- Gaming experience: Surprised to see it can do CPS3 with not a lot of hiccups. GBA paired with the LCD3X shader mitigates well enough the scaling artifacts when not using integer scaling. 240p PSX games like Klonoa are the ones that benefit the most from the small screen. Snes and Nes are as annoying as ever with the non square pixels if you have bad OCPD about stretching artifacts, as usual.

- Comfort: The d-pad is placed higher than on the og gameboy, so the corner gets into the soft of the hand and hurts a bit until you learn to adapt the posture. The analog stick placement justifies why I did not want the model with two of them. For Ridge Racer Type 4 I just place the left hand lower to not feel it too much. If I really wanted to play an analog only game, I would end using the Gamesir X2 instead.

- Commuting and travelling: Beats lugging around a Nintendo Switch for a quickie in the train. Easier to store. Loses points for not having bluetooth. I can do without wifi, but headphone cables are always a risk

- Did I really need this: Sure, it's cool to be able to play MVS Meta Slug X on the go, but then I ask myself why would I want to play on a "tiny screen" when I can do it on a 40" tv and see all the details. It's great as a replacement for aging handheld consoles, but for TV out consoles it may be better to get one of the other handhelds with bigger screens

That's it for now, I guess. Decent hardware, Need to find a pouch for it. the grey color, rather than the old GB, reminds me more of the Watara Supervisision.

I was not going to play that many analog games, It was cheaper, and I have had poor experiences with other devices that are small (cramped) and have a right analog. When the stick is that close to the buttons, it's less comfortable to use them (supposing that you are mounting full height analogs like in the Switch). I only use the left stick for making games with 8 way movement (Zelda, Earthboung) more comfortable.

Well, that was my idea when I ordered. When I got it, I found out that the analogs are "buried" into the console and don't get in the way of the d-pad and buttons like in other devices(I keep hitting the right analog accidentally in PS Vita). Had I known this, I may have gone with the 353.

So glad I bought one of these devices, makes working night shifts way more bearable.

But everything not current gen is overpriced, so I guess you're fucked either way.

It can do PS1 natively , but only 2 shoulder buttons so you would need to do some remapping and get creative with the touch screen or analogs to get by if you play games that need those buttons.

Emulators can do up to SNES and GBA but are kinda hit and miss depending on the game (no SFX games, some GBA games run choppy, etc.). Also, RetroArch is an unstable piece of shit that is prone to crashing randomly in the middle of gameplay, at least that was my impression when I tried it like a year ago, not sure if it's gotten better.

Get the Mupen64 fz standalone if you want N64, the retroarch cores for it are really shitty and broken on Android.

It's a relatively cheap device for portable emulation with built-in controls and a nice interface. If you can't think of any reason you'd need something like that, I doubt you'll get much use out of it.

I haven't really been playing anything obscure. Lately, it's just been Tetris DX, Donkey Kong (GB), and a little bit of Link's Awakening.
If you're not sure what to emulate, just dig through some rec lists and pick out some stuff that interests you. Anything up to PS1 should work fine on a 351M.

Definitely something with grips. You'll want to feel like you're holding a controller and not a handheld. I've heard the 353P is really ergonomic but it'll feel more like a SNES controller than anything else. There's also the RGB10 Max 2 and the Odin/Odin lite although good luck getting the latter.

Yeah I was thinking about the RG353P. Especially with it's stacked shoulder buttons. I'd love an Odin Pro but I'd rather spend half the money now and wait for later revisions or steeper sales on one of those.

These handheld shits seem utterly pointless for anything that isn't slow and turn based. Good action games will wear out the buttons and dpad and then you have to replace the whole unit. Not to me mention the tiny screen and tiny controls are going to get you worse results for any game worth your time.

I want to play through the Xenosaga games (as well as a few other PS2 RPGs I missed) and while I have a softmodded PS2 I'd rather be able to play them wherever as opposed to being stuck to the TV.

I don't think OG Xbox is better off than the newer stuff, but PS2 compatibility is definitely a lot better. Still worth mentioning that there are still some pretty popular games with issues though, so it'd be a good idea to check compatibility before getting something just for emulation.

Had the Steam Deck for about a week and not much to say other than yeah, it really lives up to the hype.
The only thing that's annoying is compatibility with GOG releases on the Heroic Games Launcher, but other than that more games work than those that don't on my end. Plus trackpads are great for FPS games like Quake, these should be a new standard.
Haven't emulated much but got to Magicant in Earthbound Zero. Despite my fears its pretty forgiving for an RPG of its time when you get past the early game curve. It doesn't leave the player too much in the dark when it comes to tips or items, its tough at times but not unfair either with items like Bread Crumbs.

Without run-ahead, are there any emulators on Android with minimal input delay? Trying to have PC Engine on the go but it seems like I will have to just get a PSP for the officially emulated PC Engine games on it.

The small screen doesn't bother me since most retro games are 240p and less anyway so scaling isn't an issue and detail isn't lost because they're low res anyway. I have to admit the d-pad is painful to use though, so that's why I only emulate slower paced games I can play with the circle pad without much problems (the PS1 Resident Evil games play really well on the N3DS models). I just wish I could play Ridge Racer Type 4 since it has native analog controls, but the N3DS just isn't powerful enough for it. If you ever play PS1 on 3DS just remember to convert your games to CHD for much better performance. For a lot of games it makes the difference between running like shit and playing at full speed.

I guess it depends on what you want. I mainly got mine so that I could turn off frameskip on Dreamcast and get a few Saturn edge cases running at fullspeed. It delivered on the first part, but unfortunately not for all the edge cases in the second part.

Running a couple PS2 games like Godhand and Shinobi at fullspeed, PSP at 3x resolution, not having to choose between resolution and geometry correction in Duckstation, and getting a sick transparent shell were all a nice bonus though.

I picked up the old Xperia Play phone and it's actually a great device for anyone wanting something small like the miyoo mini, but allot better. The Xperia can emulate anything 8bit and 16bit perfectly, but can also do most N64/DS/PS1 games well. It can even do allot of 2D PSP games, but a few 3D games work too. The dpad is pretty good too and the touchpads can be used on any emulator with a little tweaking. This phone is the thing I always throw in my pocket now and my favorite handheld I own, and that's saying a lot since I also own a PSP, Vita, 3DS, Deck, Retroid Pocket 3+.

Holy shit the Retroid Pocket 3 is so fucking good. I just got mine and I'm in love. The buttons are top quality, the construction is incredible, the screen is so bright. It has the performance to do everything I always wanted on a handheld. It's so solid.

As for that form factor, we're not there yet even though it's just a matter of putting in a mobile phone chipset it seems chink manufacturers are still using underpowered SoCs. Tried the second controller and it worked instantly. The other only worked wired. I really like the triggers on these a lot, other than that is just a pro controller clone. Unlike a real pro controller there's no input lag so that's a win. I'll charge the other some more and try again later.

Retroid Pocket 3+ can sync to the 59.730Hz refresh rate of the GBA perfectly. I used 240p test suite, there's zero screen tearing. Very interesting. It also syncs to standard 60hz, as well as 60.09Hz of the SNES just fine. Very impressed by this display, is this a thing on all handhelds? I don't see people test these things very often. I like running games at their actual speeds.

I've bought an RP2+, RP3, and RP3+ from them and have had a good experience every time. I'm a burger though, so keep that in mind if you're not. As far as RP3 vs RP3+ I guess it comes down to what you want to play and how you want to play it. If you just want to play 2D stuff and maybe PS1 then I don't think you benefit from getting the +. If you want to play Dreamcast, PSP, Saturn, and maybe even a couple less demanding PS2 games here and there then I'd pay the extra $20 for the +.

Seems quite a few new devices will be coming this year according to what's been shown at CES. Lots of Switch style horizontal devices with decent Snapdragon CPUs. These things will definitely emulate anything but it's still not that mythical vertical GB device that will let you play anything up to Wii/GC no problems.

Bros, so many of the posts I’ve seen and even the post above constantly talk about Anbernic quality compared to other chinkhelds like the miyoo and retroids. I bought an RG280V, got it working just the way i liked it with the adam image flashed onto a new SD card, and then two days later while it was plugged in and charging I heard a pop, the light went out, and it wouldn’t power back on. Are chink handhelds a meme, or did I just get unlucky? I want to buy another but having my first experience end in sadness makes it harder to pull the trigger on another one. I’d get something other than the RG280V though.

I have a deck so I just want something pocketable for GBA and SNES.

It is literally faster to navigate the games list with Onion. They also run better because of its tweaks to the retroarch cores, and you can swap between them *far* quicker than you can on MiniUI as well.

You don't need any combinations whatsoever to browse the game lists. The combination to switch between games in progress, which you can do instantly along with loading your state, is... the menu button.

Got a steam deck a bit ago, is emulation as easy as people make it out? I know switch emulation probably won't be great, but I only have three games I'm interested in playing.

How has the battery life been for people that have been emulating on it? Besides how uncomfortably large it is (Which I'm sure I'll get used to like the switch) the battery life has been really fucking over my enjoyment.
