What /vr/ games are we playing handheldbros? What are we playing on? Thinking of consooming another handheld you don't need?

Personally, I can't decide if I want to get the 353m or wait for the KT-R1 that might be vaporware.

Playing FFIX on an RG351P.
I have a Retroid Pocket 3 on the way. I know, the + just came around but I'm mostly using mine for moonlight anyway.
I do have a Vita and a 3DS but they're above and away less acceptable from a performance standpoint for /vr/

I want to do wired mode to my phone on my Ipega controller.
Do they even make micro-usb to micro-usb cables?
Right now I've got a micro-usb to female-usb type A ordered, and I will plug my micro-USB to USB into that.
Hopefully it works.

These Ipega controllers are uncomfortable btw. And the d-pad is not good.

Basically the Analogue Pocket. Uses FPGA tech to re-create platforms down to the circuits.

But there's a limit to current cheap FPGA tech. Saturn / PS1. At least with MiSTer. Not sure how the FPGA chip in the Analogue pocket measures up.

What I'm saying it, if you wanna do shit like PS2 or GC on the go, you're stuck with software emulation and Linux/Android/Windows.

I know it's not a retro console so pardon me, but I was looking into the N2DS XL to act as a practical emulation machine with a huge library since it runs GBA and DS games natively but then I saw the price they're still selling this thing at. Not to mention there's barely any stock left anywhere.

What's the best way to get my hands on one for cheap?

Gonna be honest bros, I've had RG351P, RG351V and RG353P, yet, I still like the 351P the best, hell, I would even put it above my VITA and N2DS.

There's something just right about the balance between size, shape and weight that makes it extremely comfortable to use. I really wish they did an updated model using the same shell, because as much as I like it I gotta admit the shoulder buttons suck and are unreliable, got the 353P hoping it would be the successor I was waiting for, but while the extra power and 4:3 screen are nice, the awkward bigger rounded shape just makes it not as comfortable to hold, also, the D-Pad SUCKS (unless mine happened to be defective). Never tried the M series, but I feel the metal weight would just mess with the delicate balance, and I also don't like the idea of the thing acting as a heatsink when I'm playing it.

I particularly like to play GB/GBC on it since it pre-loads the DMG bezel and I think actual screen size is similar to that of the real thing, which is a good thing because the higher you scale those graphics on bigger screens, the uglier they look.

Probably picking my FF1 DoS playthrough back up, also D2 on Switch. Finished my first playthrough of Sapphire version in December and I'm fucking relieved it's done and over with. I swear I spent 10+ hours just leveling my team once I made it to the Elite 4. I bought some new GBA games in the meanwhile that I'll get to work on this year. I also plan on beating Front Mission on my DS this year, if that counts since it's a port of a SNES game.

Modded AGB with my cart from when I was in high school and vanilla Switch.

Not really. I have a GPi Case that I need to use more though. What I really want is the Funnyplaying laminated ITA screen kit and shell, but I don't have spare cash for it right now. Goals are the ITA stuff and a Pi Zero 2 W to upgrade my GPi.

Almost one week with the RG351v (ARKos). Thoughts so far:

- Battery reading is pretty inaccurate. Sometimes you turn it off, turn it on and the next time the percentage is a 1% higher

- Battery + built in wifi = bad: If you are going to download thumbnails / boxart or update cores / assets, do it while connected to the DC and disable wifi immediately after. It sucked a 30% just doing that.

- Gaming experience: Surprised to see it can do CPS3 with not a lot of hiccups. GBA paired with the LCD3X shader mitigates well enough the scaling artifacts when not using integer scaling. 240p PSX games like Klonoa are the ones that benefit the most from the small screen. Snes and Nes are as annoying as ever with the non square pixels if you have bad OCPD about stretching artifacts, as usual.

- Comfort: The d-pad is placed higher than on the og gameboy, so the corner gets into the soft of the hand and hurts a bit until you learn to adapt the posture. The analog stick placement justifies why I did not want the model with two of them. For Ridge Racer Type 4 I just place the left hand lower to not feel it too much. If I really wanted to play an analog only game, I would end using the Gamesir X2 instead.

- Commuting and travelling: Beats lugging around a Nintendo Switch for a quickie in the train. Easier to store. Loses points for not having bluetooth. I can do without wifi, but headphone cables are always a risk

- Did I really need this: Sure, it's cool to be able to play MVS Meta Slug X on the go, but then I ask myself why would I want to play on a "tiny screen" when I can do it on a 40" tv and see all the details. It's great as a replacement for aging handheld consoles, but for TV out consoles it may be better to get one of the other handhelds with bigger screens

That's it for now, I guess. Decent hardware, Need to find a pouch for it. the grey color, rather than the old GB, reminds me more of the Watara Supervisision.

I was not going to play that many analog games, It was cheaper, and I have had poor experiences with other devices that are small (cramped) and have a right analog. When the stick is that close to the buttons, it's less comfortable to use them (supposing that you are mounting full height analogs like in the Switch). I only use the left stick for making games with 8 way movement (Zelda, Earthboung) more comfortable.

Well, that was my idea when I ordered. When I got it, I found out that the analogs are "buried" into the console and don't get in the way of the d-pad and buttons like in other devices(I keep hitting the right analog accidentally in PS Vita). Had I known this, I may have gone with the 353.

GBA and DS may run natively on the 3DS but they run at a different resolution than the 3DS games and it's not an integer scale so it ends up looking blurry as fuck. You're better off playing on an emulator or an actual DS.

But everything not current gen is overpriced, so I guess you're fucked either way.

It can do PS1 natively , but only 2 shoulder buttons so you would need to do some remapping and get creative with the touch screen or analogs to get by if you play games that need those buttons.

Emulators can do up to SNES and GBA but are kinda hit and miss depending on the game (no SFX games, some GBA games run choppy, etc.). Also, RetroArch is an unstable piece of shit that is prone to crashing randomly in the middle of gameplay, at least that was my impression when I tried it like a year ago, not sure if it's gotten better.

It's a relatively cheap device for portable emulation with built-in controls and a nice interface. If you can't think of any reason you'd need something like that, I doubt you'll get much use out of it.

Had the Steam Deck for about a week and not much to say other than yeah, it really lives up to the hype.
The only thing that's annoying is compatibility with GOG releases on the Heroic Games Launcher, but other than that more games work than those that don't on my end. Plus trackpads are great for FPS games like Quake, these should be a new standard.
Haven't emulated much but got to Magicant in Earthbound Zero. Despite my fears its pretty forgiving for an RPG of its time when you get past the early game curve. It doesn't leave the player too much in the dark when it comes to tips or items, its tough at times but not unfair either with items like Bread Crumbs.

No. It’s the gp2x the successor to the gp32 the first handheld emulation machine ever made, shit for brains. Both of these consoles were huge in the home brew scene and sparked the handheld emulation scene we have today. I’m dead serious. Gamepark split up after making the gp32, which caused the gp2x to be made, but the teams were competing with each other which eventually led to the pyra and the gpd win to be the competitors. That was the beginning of the hand held computer and handheld emulation machine fad that we see now. It all stems from the massive home brew scene on the gp32 and gp2x. It doesn’t get you very far being a dumb faggot, but now you know.

The small screen doesn't bother me since most retro games are 240p and less anyway so scaling isn't an issue and detail isn't lost because they're low res anyway. I have to admit the d-pad is painful to use though, so that's why I only emulate slower paced games I can play with the circle pad without much problems (the PS1 Resident Evil games play really well on the N3DS models). I just wish I could play Ridge Racer Type 4 since it has native analog controls, but the N3DS just isn't powerful enough for it. If you ever play PS1 on 3DS just remember to convert your games to CHD for much better performance. For a lot of games it makes the difference between running like shit and playing at full speed.

I guess it depends on what you want. I mainly got mine so that I could turn off frameskip on Dreamcast and get a few Saturn edge cases running at fullspeed. It delivered on the first part, but unfortunately not for all the edge cases in the second part.

Running a couple PS2 games like Godhand and Shinobi at fullspeed, PSP at 3x resolution, not having to choose between resolution and geometry correction in Duckstation, and getting a sick transparent shell were all a nice bonus though.

It's more capable of GC and PS2 than one would think. There's a lot of games that won't run well but also a lot that work surprisingly well and you'd actually be able to play comfortably as long as you don't mind the device getting hot as fuck. I'd check the compatibility list to see how many of the games you want to play work well before deciding.

I picked up the old Xperia Play phone and it's actually a great device for anyone wanting something small like the miyoo mini, but allot better. The Xperia can emulate anything 8bit and 16bit perfectly, but can also do most N64/DS/PS1 games well. It can even do allot of 2D PSP games, but a few 3D games work too. The dpad is pretty good too and the touchpads can be used on any emulator with a little tweaking. This phone is the thing I always throw in my pocket now and my favorite handheld I own, and that's saying a lot since I also own a PSP, Vita, 3DS, Deck, Retroid Pocket 3+.

No I actually mean Odin Lite. That Odin Pro was an earlier unit that had the original, more energy efficient screen while the Lite had the newer more power-hungry screen because they ran out of supply of the old screen. As a result, they were putting the shitty new screen into the Pro as well. When they both have the same screen (old or new), the Lite has better battery life, so that chart was showing just how much worse the power draw on the new screen really is.

I have no idea if they're still using the shittier power-hungry screen btw. I know they were at least talking about going back to the old screen when they were available soon after.

It arrived. $20 for two controllers I figured why not. I don't have to travel with a PS5 one. I already need a new screen protector because apparently I live in a fucking dust factory and it's amazing I havent suffocated judging by the amount of dust that got under it in the 0.25 seconds from peel to placement. But otherwise I'm hyped. Whoever said the plastic feels nice is correct; it feels great.

Mobile phone chipsets aren't cheap, if it was that easy, all the chink manufacturers would be doing it. Even budget Android phones releasing new made by chink manufacturers all start at $200 USD or so at the very least and can only be sold at that price because they have the sales volume to cover things to be priced that low with economies of scale handheld consoles will never have.

Bros, so many of the posts I’ve seen and even the post above constantly talk about Anbernic quality compared to other chinkhelds like the miyoo and retroids. I bought an RG280V, got it working just the way i liked it with the adam image flashed onto a new SD card, and then two days later while it was plugged in and charging I heard a pop, the light went out, and it wouldn’t power back on. Are chink handhelds a meme, or did I just get unlucky? I want to buy another but having my first experience end in sadness makes it harder to pull the trigger on another one. I’d get something other than the RG280V though.

I have a deck so I just want something pocketable for GBA and SNES.

>> No.9562745

Did you try opening it up and see what popped? Does it still show a green light? Could just be the battery, I'd definitely have a look.

Just a PSA for everyone: these devices shouldn't be connected to high amperage USB-C chargers. Use old style USB-C to USB-A charging and respect the amperage at the back of the device.

But yeah Anbernic is known to cut corners, like a lot of chink manufacturers for these cheap devices, it's a lottery.

The quality meme seems to be massively outdated, carrying over from when a bunch of now dead chiinkheld manufacturers and Powkiddy same parent company but w/e were their only competition. I'm constantly reading about Anbernics not charging, having defective screens, speaker issues, etc etc.

They make some cool devices for sure with good d-pads and buttons, but they have tons of hardware quality issues and their software isn't much better. Kind of ridiculous imo when they also have such premium price tags.

The entire libraries of most previous systems are also nice, but whatever you play, I recommend fiddling with the console because the potential is there, it's just untapped. For example I'm playing MAME at the moment, and it is worth it just for that (let alone NES, GBA, Genesis, etc.)

Are there any schizos here that know about input lag on Android phones? My phone is 5 years old already (Snapdragon 636, Android 8), and it has horrible input lag making retro games unplayable, it's the same with wireless/wired controllers. On-screen controls feel laggy even compared to my chink TV.
Is the input lag better on newer phones? The phones that I'd like to buy have either Helio G99 processor, or Snapdragon 680. I have no fucking idea why or how it matters, but I think I saw some anons here playing on their phones with bluetooth attachable controllers.

This is what you should do on Retroarch for optimal latency on any platform:

- Disable threaded video
- Enable Hard GPU Sync, set to 1
- Runahead set to 1, second instance
- Input Poling to Early or Late, this varies depending on the device so set which feels better to you
- You can also use Frame Delay to shave a few extra ms, but it causes hiccups so I don't like using it.

This usually knocks the input lag from a standard ~5 frames to 3 or even less depending on the device which is pretty good.

If you're on Android, Bluetooth controllers will ad about 1 or 2 frames of lag, so I'd recommend a Type-C controller

Also, the reason why you don't see people complaining on weak devices is that most people are casuals and have never experienced low input lag in their lives, so they literally just play on threaded video and don't care

>> No.9568815

>>9568807
For got to mention but you also want to set Audio delay to as low as possible without it crackling, Retroach comes with 128ms of audio delay by default and it's fucking terrible. 48ms is a pretty safe bet for most devices and low enough that you can't notice any audio delay

>analog sticks don’t sit where my thumbs naturally lay
>they feel cheap and light, as well as too recessed
>install a bunch of games from different systems
>end up just replaying point and click games in scummvm
>can’t properly enjoy them since I remember most of the puzzles
>could’ve done that on a cheap laptop or tablet

I don’t know why I thought I could revive my love of gaming with a retro handheld. I think I’ve ascended to adult hood and maybe there’s no going back.

A new form factor is worth trying no?

I owned GBs as a kid, I have a laptop, ipad, phone, pc.

I’ve never had an analog stick, horizontal handheld. Maybe it could’ve been the missing piece of the puzzle.

At least I learnt that scummvm has a bunch of graphics options that makes it superior to reinstalling myst games off my actual CDs.

Worth trying sure, it can shift your mindset abit which can help. Worth trying new emu settings too. Just for me, new systems end up as a novelty, and don't change my habits much. Been there with VR, new consoles, etc.
Whenever I've been in a "games are all shit now" funk it was always fixed by two things:
proper headspace and decent games.
For the former taking breaks, basic well being stuff, avoiding dopamine burnout.
For the latter, what worked for me are either games I used to really like, or games that are completely different than what I usually play. Point and clicks with the same puzzles might not do it for you, which makes sense. Try any other puzzle games?

Yeah I monkeypawed myself getting something strong enough to play psp/dc/n64 upscaled with 60fps hacks or overclocking and having to use really shit analogue sticks.
I don't know what I was expecting, I'm just elderly and retarded and wasn't prepared for how bad joycons are. Turning Quake 2 into a sweaty game is a new experience though, thank you rp3.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I feel like these nice and proper nip devices don't make any sense for actually playing on compared to BASED Powkiddy's sloppy A12 and A13 chinkshit.

I ordered mine last week and have been holding off on playing a few things until then.
>finally start armored core psx
>front mission
>random psp gen six ports
>stream turn based steam games
Hasn't come in yet but I can't imagine I won't have something I'll have fun with. Gotta have a plan when ordering these things

Should be able to if you use the retroarch core version.

>screen too small
You zoomers are too spoiled by huge 4K monitors if you think a near 5 inch screen is small for a handheld.

>> No.9571419

I have a question for you anons. How about screen protectors for this devices, do you guys use and if you guys have experience using matte screen protectors?
I have a OLED Vita and I don't know if it will look good to use a matte screen protector. I saw a comment from a anon saying that using a matte screen protector made pixelated old games really good to play.

I wish the RP2+ had the build quality of the 3+, it still feels like the 2+ is the best device they ever made since its the only one with 4:3

353m or rp3+? I want to play 5th gen without trouble.

you arent supposed to play ON the device
you are supposed to play on a large vertical monitor
