Anyone else use the "claw" method to hold and use this controller for most games? I sure do. It's not very ergonomic in the traditional sense, and the three row button layout does not lend well to fast presses in that traditional hold. The "claw" is superior in that regard and is actually pretty natural after a few minutes. Feels like an arcade cabinet, which most of the games you are playing are ports of anyway.

Based clawer.

I just got a genesis and both controllers for Christmas and haven't played it yet while I wait for a good cable to come in. Do people use the 3 button one for reasons other than nostalgia? I genuinely know nothing about this

The ecosystem is full of the three button pad, because most Genesis consoles came with that one. A lot of people who grew up with a Genesis didn't even know there was a 6 button pad until many years later, myself included. Very few Mega Drive/Genesis games used the extra XYZ buttons, but if you had a fighting game, they were effectively mandatory.

>> No.9548205

No. I feel it being necessary in only a few games. most of the genesis games I played the third button was usually a limited action such as bombs it's almost as if it exist mainly to behave as the a+b combination some 8 bit games had.

It's more comfortable. They actually made the 6 button even more uncomfortable, if that was even possible. The x,y and z buttons are too pointy and crowded and at a different angle than the a, b and c buttons. Ergonomic mess. An SNES layout with an extra row would have been fine.

>concave top row
>proper spacing
>top and bottom row in the same line with finger placement

SNES controller was perfection and ahead of it's time.

I don't get your complaint about Sega's inability to secure a US trademark on the name "Mega Drive" so they instead called their 16-bit gaming console "Genesis" as opposed to not selling it at all.

it's also too small with crappy face buttons, though I guess I get why small kids would prefer it

Just leaves you craving a real arcade pad the whole time. There's a reason console controllers left this unsatisfying compromise in the dust.
