Posted this in an earlier thread, but last Saturday, the only garage sale I went to that had video games, and when I asked, I was pulled around to their backyard where these were sitting in garbage bags ready to get thrown out, along with an N64, a broken PS2, and a bunch of other common N64 games. It took a lot of time to clean the gross brown grime off these.

Everything in insert into them is clean and sanitary.

I usually disassemble controllers to clean the points and to get out any fat kids cheetos.

I typically don't disassemble the consoles unless I suspect a problem.

Bought a CIB PS1 Dualshock, with everything in very good condition (seriously, it had the polystyrene, and even an unopened memory card in the plastic bag which had the manual) for £24. It was reduced from £50, it also came with a free Steering Wheel, so I guess I did okay.

I checked online, and the Dualshock PS1 was about £40, and the steering wheel probably pushed that up to £50 I'd imagine.

That being said they had a complete copy of NHL 95 in great condition sitting out on the "undesirable" game rack for $2. Even though sports games are cheap as shit and undesirable as fuck, and even though EA made, NHL 95 is a pretty good Genesis game. I was happy with it

And I once had a microwave inexplicably infested with bugs. I blame my sister being a disgusting slob in the kitchen. Weird thing is that they could survive being nuked in there.

I guess it goes without saying that anything you buy secondhand should be cleaned and inspected before you set it up. Anyway, the last secondhand thing I got that counts as retro is MediEvil from a thrift shop. Only $1.

I have no idea. Never seen it before.

It's actually purple, the same color as the bottom two buttons pleb camera and it's called the Super Score but I can't find any info about it. There is no manufacturer printed on the bottom or anywhere else. The controller just snaps in snug and It feels kinda like a thick Sega 6 button. It's got some crazy finger groves on the back. It adds weight to the controller and feels comfortable but why you would ever change the snes paddle is beyond me. Cool novelty tho.

Yard sales for me are great sometimes, lots of retro/not retro finds because no one really knows what it is. Last week my dad brought home a shoe box with 007 and OoT loose carts, a gameshark, a memory card, controller cleaner, and some other controller peripherals for N64, and strangely a GB ac adapter, for like 50 cents or some shit.

Flea markets around here are another story lately, I completely stopped going because mine are being dominated by Ebay faggots who think everything is the second coming of Christ and need top dollar for a loose cart of even terrible Nes/Snes games.

You are lucky anon, there is no doubt the retro craze is in full swing. TV shows about pawn shops, storage sales and Pickers got people thinking all their old garbage is worth money or they wannabeapickertoo.jpg. I was at an auction in my city and I heard a couple of greasy dudes talking to each other saying things like, "Been outta work for awhile so I says, Yea, I'll be a picker too." I've never lived thru a bubble before and it's a trip to see the prices just rise and rise and rise. In a way it's cool that units end up for sale and not in a dump but there are fewer gems out in the wild now, and the price gouging is depressing.

>pawn shops

There's one really fucking bad pawn store in my city. I have been there two times. All of his games start at $10, no matter what system or how shitty the game is. He had a Megaman 8 black label I wanted... for $40. His prices keep getting higher too. When I asked him about it in January he said $30 and I still passed cause I know you can get them for $20 on ebay. When I ask him for a better deal, he says no way. I asked him about game gear games too... he has about 7 and he wants $5-$20 each. There was Strider Returns, last time he wanted $15 for it and now this time $20. None of this shit has moved an inch since I last inquired about it. I'm just gonna stop going. It's getting too wild.

Guy is weird too. He's some ugly fucker who's store is so cluttered that you can't even walk or see half the shit, and when you ask him to look for something he barely gets off his ass to do it. Very rude, won't haggle at all either. He's a pawn shop and he's charging higher than ebay prices but won't haggle. What in the fuck? Also, when I was looking around some 16 year olds came into the store to sell their guitar. He asked them for two pieces of ID, they said they only had 1 school ID. Then he asked if they were 18 and they said no, they were 16. So he said he cannot buy from them legally. Then all they had to say was "come on" and he bought their guitar from them saying "it's just a formality". Shady motherfucker.

It makes me sick to my stomach too. The dude easily 2000 games in there across all systems, and it's like that anything non-SNES or NES will ever see the light of day until he closes down and has to liquidate it. Son of a bitch.

If you can walk to those locations it'd be great, but if you're in a situation where you constantly have to drive back and forth to do any exploring it's not worth the money in fuel. It's why I've personally resorted to online shopping and only check shops if I happen to be passing the area.

I've never met a seller that has FF games that are not overpriced. Usually they know of the titles popularity. $20 is how much I bought a complete and a black label copy on a ebay auction.

Also-
I found Jade Cocoon at a Flea Market, bought it for $2 because I told the lady it was a 2 disc game and was missing a disc. At the time I genuinely thought it was a 2 disc game. The lady was selling a lot of complete PS1 games for $4. I also bought World Destruction League - Thunder Tanks for $4 which a later found out it wasn't a rare game.

PS1 games titles I can never find in a Flea market-
Dino Crisis , Parasite Eve, Persona, Mega Man titles. Has anyone spotted one of these titles at a flea market before? Maybe the Dino Crisis games but I've never seen a Persona title at a flea market. On ebay Persona 2 complete game sell from $50-$100.

The fruits of yesterday's labor. Garage sale. $5 for all of it together, although I'm not sure how the poor guy even ended up with a SNES with no components in the first place.

The NES didn't power up at first, but when I swapped the 9V AC original power adapter for a 9V DC one I happened to have lying around (the robust rectifier in the NES will handle DC just as well as it handles AC), it worked perfectly.
The controller's cord was a little torn, and you can see where I took it apart and covered the rift with electrical tape (right at the base of the controller itself). The Mario/Duck Hunt cartridge appears to have a little water damage, but I already have on in perfect condition anyway.
The NES and controller are quite yellowed, which I haven't seen very often on NESs (not like you see on SNESs...), but after a good disassembly and wash to get the grime and cheetos off of them, I decided that they're good enough. I could do a hydrogen peroxide treatment for the yellowing, but since I'm just going to set this one up for people to play duck hunt in my apartment, it doesn't really matter if it is in perfect condition or not.

Since I don't have power, video, controllers, or games for the SNES here at my apartment, it's untested. Hoping to hit some thrift stores today or tomorrow and see if I can't at least get some games and controllers for the SNES. Even if I can't find power or video cables for it, I know that the SNES has the same voltage regulator as the NES, so the same power supply I'm using for that should work (And 12V DC should work too, in a pinch, though it will heat up more), and I suspect that I'll be able to rig up something good enough to get at least some kind of picture out of the multiport, at least enough so that I can test if the console is working once I have a game in it.
In a week or so I'll be able to pick up my NES RF adaptor, which I believe will work just fine with the RF jack on the SNES.

To better explain, Gungriffon is an FPS mech game, fun as hell, kind of clunky, but amazing controls. Arcadey, has a kind of ruthlessness about it, but it's definitely a hidden gem on the console.

Here's some gameplay! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZdYDe47nyU

Darius Gaiden is another cheaper game. Fun as hell shmup with about 26 levels, not bullet hell, but more like Gradius. I didn't even care for shmups until I picked up this game, and while it might not be the most amazing, it's definitely a fun as hell game that I've poured a TON of hours into.

Went out this morning and found nothing at the garage sales I visited, this is the 3rd time this week and I usually find at least a PS1/PS2 game I'm interested but nope just clothes. I got kinda pissed but shrugged it off and went to the mall with my bud to do some window shopping and get some food. After that we decided to go to the Play N Trade and started laughing at their fucking rediculous ass prices (Mario/Duck Hunt for $15, Ninja Gaiden for $25, and even more I can't list it was fucking bad). They even had Earthbound behind their glass and I was furious they managed to buy that from some guy for (probably) a couple bucks, but I don't know if they'd be willing to pay for games like that but the game was being sold for $345. After some browsing I was losing hope but managed to get these 2 games for $5. Eh, at least I got something and they're pretty damn fun, especially "The Guardian Legend".

I could get better deals often, but he makes a point to undersell places like Gamestop for newer games, and he offers cheap controllers, often will just say "If it breaks, bring it back and I'll give you a new one." Jesus man I feel your pain. If it wasn't the reseller it was me who cleaned out the place, and that isn't saying much since there wasn't any "amazing" pick ups that happened there. It's had going to flea markets now because of resellers and it's even more difficult going to garage sales because people are selling online or because they go on sites like E-Bay and sell for the new price at a garage sale/flea market stand. Unfortunately some thrift stores I goto are also dry, last game I got was Medal of Honor for PC.

There's no real gamestop or anything like that in the town he's in, and it's pretty obvious he probably hits up a fair number of craigslist ads and garage sales. See, when resellers claim they're providing a service, they don't do shit like this. You buy a game for $10 and sell it for $15, that's a fair mark up. Even if that game is Chrono Trigger, you know? Resellers can be good if they work it as something like a hobby. Truth be told, I'm not totally bugged by resellers going through garage sales and whatnot, so as long as they don't add more than $10 to the pricetag. Gas costs money, and there should be something of a finders fee.

The ideal reseller is one that respects the collector, tries to make a living, but not overdoing it. Trouble is that a lot of resellers seem to have no issue doing this kind of shit

Resellers won't give you garage sale steal kind of deals, but the really good ones are a place to frequent once every so often if you're looking for a nice copy of something, or you want a game now and don't want to pay for something on ebay.

Scene is a "cool dude" used video store. Soundtrack is progressive hip hop.
Supporting characters: Full sleeve tattoo clerk, goatee assistant manager.

> Pull up to store, turn off Google Nav. Man this place looks pretty cool and big too I bet they have tons of cheap loose NES games.
> They have about 30. No black labels except Golf and 10 Yard Fight, all three-screws.
> Decide this is the kind of place I should check out thoroughly. Lots of weird stuff - guitar amps, slot machines, some import stuff, lots of controllers, two huge tubs of $10 360 power supplies, many used bagged various accessories like Gamestop used to always have.
> Buy pic related for 9.99, ever since I got my PVM I've been taking every opportunity to step up my cable game and this is a bretty pitchin' cable.
> Notice a scibbly sign about PS2 games being buy one get one free. They have Indigo Prophecy and a brand new SMT: Devil Summoner both tagged $20 each. I can't leave them at that price.
> Offer the sweet Sony betamax VCR I had in my trunk up on trade. They want it but can't take it in without the owner(?) Or I dunno somebody with an even cooler beard and/or possibly a coke habit? Just going by what I know about game stores from personal experience.
> Decide to actually pony up and pay the $20 but the tattoo guy rings it up. $40! "Aren't PS2 games bogo?" Turns out it's only used games!
>So I wasted like 20 extra minutes and I thought the thrifts were open till 9 but they were only open till 6 on Sundays so I missed out on 1.95 that I was gonna go to (I got into one just as they were closing. No black label NES)

Build quality makes a big difference with LD players since they're inherently analog devices, but I don't know that specific model. Usually panasonics are pretty "consumer grade," but if the guy knows what he's talking about, his price is probably close to fair.
The most expensive laserdisc player you'll find for sale will be on the order of $1000, and the cheapest you'll find are usually around $40 (or $10-$20 for ones that have something wrong with them).
In general, they're moderately rare finds. You'll see an LD player about as often as you see Dreamcasts, and maybe twice as often as you see Saturns.

If you've never owned a laserdisc player, you have no need for a top of the line model. Get yourself the cheapest one you can find and start amassing a collection of discs (make sure they're in good condition as well! Since the discs are also analog technology, they can "warp" over time and lose fidelity if they are stored improperly or mistreated!). Once you've got your feet wet on that, and got a killer bigscreen CRT to watch it on (not to mention contemporary dolby sound system), THEN you can start thinking about upgrading to a more "perfect" model.

>Now it's time for the payoff!
So my mom has been wanting one of these cruiser style bicycles that are popular with hipsters right now but are also like the bikes she rode a hundred years ago. She bought one off the sidewalk for $30. I was like "You should ride it before you buy it!" and she was like "I have sandals on!" and I was like "You better get some shoes on!" and she was like "But someone might buy it before then!" so she bought it without riding it and sure enough when she rode it the pedal spindle wasn't tight enough and slipped when she tried to go uphill. She wanted me to go with her to take it back but the guy was really nice and said he'd fix it.

Anyway, on our way to that there was this garage sale. It didn't look that interesting but we checked it out anyway and holy shit there was one of these first gen tabletop arcade games that I love so much for only $1! When I went to pay for it and a couple others (pic related) I noticed that the two guys who were running the garage sale (approximate age, 50) were... pretty friendly with each other... and then it occurred to me that their stuff was pretty... fancy... but still guy stuff.. You know what I'm saying?

So I'm trying to pay for this stuff and they're like "Who'th thtuff is thaat?" "I think it'ss Tommy'ss" so this was some kind of "community" sale. I get them back to the car and realize that they all smell like approximately 200 chewed sticks of Juicy Fruit but I don't think any of them have been up anybody's butt so I count it as a score even though the Caveman isn't as valuable as one of my licenesed Coleco ones it's so freaking cute! In fact, it's so cute I think I may post another pic close up of its display running its attract mode.

If you see that many, you either live in an anomalous location (or somewhere outside the US?), or you hit a lot of sales. Either way you're probably due for seeing an LD deck or two.

When I give those rough out-of-the-ass estimates, my basic assumption is that you can get a dreamcast anytime, anywhere, if you're willing to use the internet and pay "fair" price ($40 or so for the console alone), and that there are at least a couple Saturns in every craigslist region, but you aren't likely to see them "in the wild" on people's front lawns.

For your reference, in my region I get:
31 results for searching "sega saturn" (gotta filter out cars and such by using the word "sega"), 1 of which is in my immediate area
31 results for "laserdisc," 1 of which is in my immediate area
And 100 results for "dreamcast", 3 of which are in my immediate area.

So I guess the ratio of dreamcasts to saturns and LD decks is close to 3:1 than 2:1, but more or less my rule seems OK to me.

Estate sales are awesome, but you gotta get there crazy early. It's prime hunting grounds for resellers; one estate sale I showed up to, and soon as I found the room with the games in it, there was a dude shoving every single thing he could find into a duffel bag. I told him to calm down a bit, and he replied something along the lines of "I gotta eat."

I did find a CIB copy of F-Zero for my trouble that he missed, at least.

>> No.964552

Of course I should add that those results are totally unfiltered--the vast majority of them are for laser DISCS or Saturn/Dreamcast GAMES, not players/systems. However, we should reasonably expect a correlation between the number of those sorts of things and the systems needed to use them for sale, in a given area, for obvious reasons.

I'm just trying to say that there aren't actually 31 Saturns for sale within 50 miles of me.

I dunno what kind of place you were at, but I've never been to an estate sale that had anything more technological than a sewing machine. In my area at least, 100% of the time, they're old ladies who died and left a house full of costume jewelry (with one or two pieces of real gold mixed in, which you can make big bucks off of, but that's another story...) and ugly antique furniture.

Moving sales were always my favorite. Rich families trading one McMansion for another, and willing to sell everything in it for next to nothing, just so they can start over buying things from scratch. The real trick to scoring like that is just to know which areas in your region are wealthier, so you can skip the neighborhoods populated exclusively by medicaid recipients and old black ladies, and find the disillusioned too-rich Gen X-ers selling mansions full of computers, big screen TVs, and vidya.

Well, what happens is, these estate sales are created by people that swoop in when an estate goes up for sale, and do all the heavy lifting of selling stuff. The one I went to was run by monsterestatesales.net. Usually, estate sales are garbage, but most of the time they usually post pictures of everything that's available. They put me on their mailing list and send me notifications of estate sales they're doing that have video games; there was one last week that I wasn't able to go to, but it had a bunch of N64 and GameCube games.

Oh, so you can actually take advantage of the commercial-estate-saler system? That would make all the difference in the world, I guess. It's basically a glorified garage sale, except it's inside the house, not outside. It's usually for getting rid of bigger things, like furniture, but most of the time everything inside is up for grabs.

People usually have estate sales if the original owner dies or they're moving from one big house to another big house, so usually it's old people crap.

You can get rid of the yellowing with hydrogen peroxide and oxiclean, but be careful--it can seriously irritate your hands and eyes.

The process goes something like this... mix up a cup of high-concentration hydrogen peroxide (the stuff you put on cuts is 3%, you need 6% or 12%, which are sold as hair bleach--if you can't find it at the drugstore, try going to a salon) with a two or three tablespoons of corn starch, and microwave it for 40 or 50 seconds until it is warm throughout. As you stir it up, it should turn into a gel with the consistency of pudding. Then mix in a teaspoon or two of oxiclean powder, and stir it up until it dissolves as much as you can get it to. Then, paint the jelly mixture onto the case of your SNES (you should've removed it, cleaned it thoroughly with soap and water, dried it, and put it on a tray of some kind by now), and set it somewhere to be exposed to as much UV light as possible for a few hours (using a fluorescent "black light" is best, but if you can't get one (you usually can though in "Halloween stores" and the like), sunlight might work too.
After six to eight hours, when you wash the jelly off, your SNES should be noticeably grayer. You can go through two or three treatments with this process to improve it even more.

This process works because it reverses a chemical reaction of bromine (an orange substance, hence the piss-yellow color) that was added to the plastic used in some plants manufacturing NES and SNES cases. The UV light serves as an input of energy to start the endothermic reaction, the oxiclean is a catalyst, the cornstarch is a thickening agent that simply keeps the chemicals stuck to the body of the SNES, and of course the hydrogen peroxide contains the reactant.

The scene here in Brazil is abyssal, the pirated games reigned at the time since they were cheaper and nobody cared about originals. There are no garage sales and internet sales are ridiculously overpriced. Also you rarely find something boxed.

In my city I know only two resellers that sell a few loose carts for around $17 and all sorts of pirated games for around $11. I ended up buying a loose Star Fox in good condition for this price because I really wanted to play some SuperFX games. It is worth noting that since our government is shit, these absurd prices are probably due to heavy taxes on imported electronic goods.

Since things here are shit, I actually learned moonrunes so I could import cheap games through some friends in japan. I'm going to Japan soon and I plan hunting tons of games there.

Emulators have their perks, but nothing ever beats the experience of popping in that cartridge, holding that controller, and spending hours sitting in front of the TV. Often times a lot of games just don't make sense until you have the console and that controller in your hands, and even more just straight up feel wrong without the console.

If you emulate, you gotta find a nice joypad, otherwise you might as well not even bother. Some RPGs don't lose anything, but games like Road Rash or Super Metroid feel straight up WRONG without playing it with a really nice joypad.

Here's a great tutorial on how to replace batteries on cartridges (soldering not necessary)

http://youtu.be/Pj1xKzqRMJQ

It just shows Nintendo related stuff, but do a basic research on what kind of batteries does actual Genesis cartridges uses and you're set to go following these instructions.

If I could find a seller that consistently replaced the batteries so I didn't have to and sold at a prices like that I would always buy from them. I know its pretty easy to replace, I just think it would be cool to not always have to worry about it when I buy games that need batteries.

Similar thing happened to me.
Went to a yard sale Saturday looking for older games, I asked the lady if she had any, she said yeah I just sold them a minutes before I got there.
fuckthisgayearth.gif
She was selling almost everything for 25-50 cents so it kinda bummed me out. She said it was round 20 best selling NES games, so that kinda lightened the blow. She then told me she has a bunch of SNES she's selling next week, he grandmother interrupts and said yeah I'm selling mine too. Long story short, I gave her my phone number and will be buying every SNES game for somewhere around 50cents a pop.

Guess the moral of the story is ya win some ya lose some, never hurts to ask.

I went into a yard sale on Saturday just in time to see a Turbografx 16 leaving along with a Vectrex box (they didn't have the actual Vectrex anymore or I would really be kicking myself) but I still came out OK, because they had hundreds of records for $1 apiece and I got at least 6 albums worth more than $20, in excellent condition. Including the Once Upon A Time In The West soundtrack, still sealed.
