The 2 action games don't really have a story but they're fun. First one lacks real bosses but the second one made up for that.

The 2 RPGs do, and they're pretty fun imo. Story doesn't take itself very seriously so don't go looking for canon there. The first one is bit too limited gameplay wise imo; but the second one overstays its welcome and I got tired of it when I reached the vegetables world.

Ako has some very well designed dungeons, great soundtrack and a very nice artstyle. Much better than the sloppy, ugly Daikaiten that doesn't even have original music.
Only real problem with Ako is you can't play as Yae and Sasuke, but the new characters are interesting enough in their own gameplay.

I view Goemon more as a wacky version of Castlevania, like Parodius is to Gradius.
Ebisumaru even worked on an actual parody Castlevania game (Kid Dracula), which is more like what you describe as "Megaman but actually good" in terms of gameplay.
